Daniel Cormier still talking fight against Jon Jones, suggests stint as TUF coaches

Unbeaten former Olympian Daniel Cormier may currently be competing as a heavyweight where he?s racked up a handful of impressive wins, but it seems the 33-year old Strikeforce fighter has his eyes on a champion in a different division rather than a continued run against larger opponents.

According to the 5?11? Cormier, a bout with light heavyweight title-holder Jon Jones is something he?s seriously interested in and will pursue fully assuming he gets by Frank Mir on November 3. In fact, he even has an idea that he feels would be a win-win for all involved parties.

?I know a situation that helps out everyone,? explained Cormier in an interview with Bloody Elbow. ?At the beginning of the year, let us coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter. That gives me time to actually get my weight down, and in the summer time, we fight. How does that sound? I’m throwing it out there right now. Let’s do it. He hasn’t coached the show before, and neither have I. Let the fans get to know me better by putting me on TV for two and a half months, and then put me and Jon in a fight.?

The UFC recently announced TUF 17 would feature 185/205 pound fighters, weight-classes certainly making sense where light heavyweight coaches are concerned.

As far as how Cormier would approach Jones in the Octagon, the American Kickboxing Academy staple wouldn?t shy away from doing what he does best ? combining powerful punches with elite wrestling ability.

“Jon’s a good wrestler, but I’ve wrestled at a different level. I’m gonna pressure him. I’m gonna take him down. I think it would be great for everybody, all around,? said Cormier. ?I can tell you with 100% confidence in myself and in my ability, that if I was to fight him, or anyone else in the world, at some point in that fight, if I decide to put them on their back, I’m putting them on their back.?

While Cormier has his hands full with Mir in November, Jones also has a full plate at the moment including a September 22 scrap against Vitor Belfort and likely showdown with Dan Henderson at some point thereafter.
