Hard-punching, Mexican-born, WBA and WBO junior flyweight (108 pounds) champion Giovanni Segura (pictured above, on the left) of Bell Gardens, Calif., could fight an April 23 rematch with southpaw Ivan Calderon (above, at far right), a 35-year-old pure boxer whom Segura dethroned as WBO titlist with an eighth-round stoppage in August on Calderon's home turf at Coliseo Mario 'Quijote' Morales, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
"Ivan is the one who is asking for the fight, and he's saying that there were reasons that he wasn't ready and making excuses for why he lost," Segura told FanHouse.
"I have no problem taking this fight so soon, but first, I have a fight on Nov. 27," said Segura. "If this fight is going to pay me a good amount of money, and it's going to put things clear that my victory wasn't just the result of me having a lucky night, then that's why I want it. Ivan Calderon gave me the opportunity to fight him, so, why not give him the opportunity back."
According to a report by BoxingScene.com, the 28-year-old Segura (25-1-1, 21 knockouts), who scored his sixth knockout in as many straight wins when he floored Calderon (34-1-1, six KOS) at 1 minute, 34 seconds of the eighth, and Calderon are slated for their return bout at the location of their first.
"Giovanni Segura says he has no problem to meet Calderon again in his backyard because he's sure to repeat the same result," said Segura's manager, Richard Mota. "They have not signed the contract, so it's a verbal agreement, but it's pretty concrete."
