Freddie Roach: Manny Pacquiao Won't Fight Below 147 Anymore

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Manny Pacquiao will not take another fight at anything below welterweight (147 pounds), that is, if the Filipino superstar's trainer, Freddie Roach, has his way.

"We're not going to fight below 147," said Roach. "I want Manny to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, because he's a much happier fighter, and tonight was a good example."

Pacquiao entered the ring at 148 pounds for Saturday night's lopsided unanimous decision victory over Antonio Margarito, which garnered his 13th straight win, and his eighth championship in as many different weight classes, as Pacquiao earned the WBC's junior middleweight (154 pounds) title at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Pacquiao weighed 144.6 pounds at Friday's weigh-in compared to Margarito's 150 pounds, which was the contracted catch weight for their bout, even as Margarito entered the ring at 165 after eating and hydrating for a full day.

"I thought the weight was great. The more weight that you gain, the better it is for us," said Roach. "For someone to gain 16 pounds after the weigh in to fight time, it's terrible for your body. I love it when they get big like that, I really do. It slows them down and it's like, food makes you sluggish."

The bout marked the fourth time in his past five fights that Pacquiao weighed between 142 and 145-and-3/4s pounds, comprising knockouts of Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, respectively, in the eighth and 12th rounds, as well as one-sided decisions over Joshua Clottey and Margarito.

Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts) stopped Cotto in November 2009 for his current WBO welterweight belt.
