The 29-year-old Paul Williams is gearing up for what is expected to be Saturday night's high-octane, high volume-punching, middleweight (160 pounds) rematch with WBC titlist Sergio Martinez in a battle of southpaws whose December bout featured first-round knockdowns of both fighters. The winner of the HBO televised match up between Williams (39-1, 27 knockouts) and the 35-year-old Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KOs), a loser of a disputed majority decision the first time round, is expected to be a candidate, albeit, an unlikely one, to face pound-for-pound, eight-division champion, Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38KOs).
Prior to facing Martinez, Williams, who is nicknamed, "The Punisher," was scheduled to face the right-handed Kelly Pavlik, who withdrew with an injury three weeks prior to the date of the fight. Williams spoke to FanHouse in this Q&A about his recent preparation, which includes having sparred with southpaw former belt-holder and rival Carlos Quintana, whom Williams once stopped in a first-round knockout that was a rematch of his lone defeat.
