Six-month suspension issued to Jake Shields for failed drug test

After mixed results in the UFC as a welterweight, Jake Shields made the decision to beef back up to 185 pounds where he held gold under the Strikeforce banner. The 33-year old grappler made his middleweight debut in the Octagon this past August, facing Ed Herman at UFC 150 who he beat by way of Unanimous Decision.

However, it appears Shields compromised his integrity in order to achieve the desired result. According to a press release from his management team, the Cesar Gracie-trained stand-out tested positive for drugs after the fight and is in the midst of serving a six-month suspension as a result.

Shields Happy with Success Against Herman but Predicts Better Performances in the Future

No word was given on whether or not Shields was fined a percentage of his purse for the infraction, as is often the case in similar situations, and/or if his victory over Herman will be changed to a No Contest. The specific substance used by Shields was not revealed.

?Prior to my professional bout at UFC 150 in Denver, Colorado, I used a substance prohibited by Colorado Boxing Commission rules,? admitted Shields in a prepared statement to media. ?This was a mistake that I fully regret. I have shared this issue with my family and the UFC and I have apologized to them and now I also apologize to you, the fans. I promise this will never occur again in my fighting career.?

?I accept the Boxing Commission’s decision for a six-month suspension, which will expire in February. I ask that you accept my apology. I will be back fighting soon, and hope that the fans of MMA will support me until that time,? he concluded.

Shields? win over Herman was his second straight since falling in a title-fight against welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
