Chael Sonnen dead set on eventual scrap with Jon Jones

UFC star Chael Sonnen nearly got a crack at light heavyweight champion Jon Jones earlier this month when ?Bones? was left without an opponent, giving Sonnen an opportunity to step up and fill in on short notice. However, Jones turned the tilt down in favor of a fight a few weeks later and ended up with Vitor Belfort as an in-ring adversary.

As might be expected, Sonnen hasn?t forgotten the slight and is still determined to duke it out at some point with the 25-year old title-holder.

“I am better than Jon Jones and sound better than Sean Combs. You can dodge me now (Jon), but sooner or later you and me are going to be the last two to get off the bus,? said Sonnen on Fuel TV during post-event coverage for UFC on Fuel 5.

Sonnen Expands Reach with Role on “Always Sunny in Philadelphia”

Though Sonnen is currently scheduled to face Forrest Griffin in December, he labeled the bout as only being ?alleged? even though he has already signed the contract. Sonnen?s latest comments could have come as the result of both Jones and UFC President Dana White recently showing openness to the idea of a match-up materializing. Adding to the likelihood of the fight, top contenders Dan Henderson-Lyoto Machida have been linked to a meeting in the immediate future rather than either fighting for Jones? title.

UFC on FUEL TV 5 results: Takedowns set up Dan Hardy win over Amir Sadollah

NOTTINGHAM, England - Dan Hardy certainly has shown some improvements to his game.

The British fighter, once regarded as a fairly one-dimensional striker, used a well-balanced attack and scored multiple takedowns to top Amir Sadollah.

The welterweight bout co-headlined Saturday'sUFC on FUEL TV 5 event at Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England. The fight aired on FUEL TV following prelims on Facebook.

TUF 16 Results: Neil Magny?s performance improves Team Carwin?s record to 1-0

When UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson selected Neil Magny from Shane Carwin?s squad last night on the Ultimate Fighter 16 he explained it was the result of the 24-year old celebrating his birthday that very day. However, the gift was not meant to be one out of kindness but rather a means of eliminating Magny from the season?s tournament by pairing him against BJJ expert Cameron Diffley.

In the end, Magny has a present of his own to deliver in the form of an opening round victory for his team. The Chicago native?s success came as the result of crisp striking and takedown defense preventing Diffley from ever finding his groove minus one legitimate submission attempt.

Their bout capped off the second episode of TUF 16 also ripe with other highlights including some dissention in the ranks of Team Nelson and the beginnings of a prank war.

A Closer Look at the TUF 16 Teams

A handful of fighters in Nelson?s group showed disappointment with their leader?s decision to approach training less rigorously than they would have preferred, leaving some competitors wondering if they were truly going to be able to maximize their potential.

On a brighter note, his team also gelled some during the episode after covering Team Carwin?s Mike Ricci with flour after catching him off-guard as he returned from training. Ricci, who had previously said he couldn?t relate to the intellectual deficiency of some of his house-mates, seemed unamused by remained stone-faced rather than lashed out at the culprits.

Gus Johnson Signs With Fox but Stays With Showtime

by Michael David SmithLast week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well.

Theoretically, it's even possible that Johnson could be back on the CBS airwaves if CBS ever aired another Strikeforce fight: When Johnson called EliteXC and Strikeforce fights on CBS in the past, that was part of his Showtime deal. It's probably a long shot that we'd see Johnson back on CBS, however.

Ian McCall out to earn rematch with Demetrious Johnson

Now that the UFC has crowned its first flyweight champion in the form of Demetrious Johnson, the organization will have to start looking for contenders to challenge for the company?s newest belt. While it looks like an October 5 bout between John Dodson and Jussier da Silva will determine the first individual in that line, talented 125er Ian McCall recently made it clear he isn?t to be forgotten about either.

McCall went online last night to issue a warning to Johnson to let him know he?s out to settle a score. The pair has mixed it up on two previous occasions with one resulting in an errant Draw and the other a decision win for ?Mighty Mouse?.

?I’m coming for ya,? posted McCall on The Underground. ?Hold onto my belt for me in the meantime.?

McCall: “Free at last, free at last…”

The 11-3-1 McCall has not fought since his June loss to Johnson and does not have anything inked at the moment, seeing an expected match-up fall apart due to injury and an untimely arrest for some old warrants. However, he is expected to fight again before year?s end.

George St-Pierre wants to finish fights, study dinosaurs and eat McDonalds

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has recently been given the green light to start training for his Nov. 17 fight with interim champ Carlos Condit. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, GSP said he wants to finish fights because of the criticism he takes for going to decision, as he did in his last four fights.

Saying he wants to be more "opportunistic," GSP said he is fighting the world's best.

"I can make up a bunch of excuses but the truth is I'm fighting the best guys all the time and it's tough competition. You cannot always win by beautiful fashion. The guy that is in front of me is a very good guy. He's the No. 1 contender all the time and now I'm fighting the (interim) world champ in Carlos Condit. I'm working a lot more on being more opportunistic and it's going to pay off I'm sure."

With a record of 22-2 and six title defenses, GSP has proven himself one of the best fighters to ever grace the Octagon, but the lack of recent finishes nags at the idea he is the very best. A finish over Condit could silence those worries.

GSP also talked about a few other, non-fight-related items. He said if he wasn't a fighter, he would be a paleontologist or archaeologist. And his favorite splurge food?

I like McDonald's. Three cheeseburgers, French fries, poutine with chicken McNuggets and a big Coca-Cola.

Whoa. The man with washboard abs loves a meal with enough calories to last him two days.

UFC legends Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin training together at Evolve MMA in Singapore

Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin are two of the greatest MMA fighters America has ever produced. Between them they have won titles in the UFC, PRIDE and Strikeforce. While they have already shared a cage together, competiting in an exciting 2009 tilt, next month these former opponents will be sharing a training facility for the first time.

Both heading to Singapore to train with the Evolve MMA Fight Team which includes nine BJJ black belts, world champions in boxing and Muay Thai and NCAA and Olympic level wrestlers.

Franklin is looking to take a step closer to another shot at the UFC middleweight title when he takes on Cung Le in Macau next month, while Henderson has a UFC light heavyweight title-shot in his cross hairs. He was initially scheduled to face UFC champion Jon Jones but had to pull out of the bout due to injury. A fight with Jones is still a possibility although Dana White has also hinted that he might prefer to have Henderson fight Lyoto Machida first.

Henderson, who has won his last four fights beating the likes of Renato Sobral and Fedor Emelianenko, will be reunited with his long term cornerman Heath Sims when he heads to Singapore, as Sims is in charge of the wrestling program at Evolve MMA. He will also find himself rubbing shoulders with Franklin. With both men now competing in different weight divisions and unlikely to be asked to fight each other again they will be able to spar together and train together at Evolve MMA.

The Evolve MMA Fight Team consists of elite fighters such as Rafael dos Anjos, Shinya Aoki, Zorobabel Moreira and Leandro Issa, plus fighters from the US often travel to to train there with Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren also spending a few weeks in Singapore earlier this year.

Police blotter: Chad Mendes charged, former Jackson?s fighter arrested

Police-related news in MMA to report:

-- UFC featherweight Chad Mendes was charged with simple battery for his role in a bar fight in Hanford, Calif. He is cooperating with the police, denies he was involved, and will be arraigned on Sept. 19. Mendes' last fight was a 31-second knockout of Cody McKenzie at UFC 148.

-- Willie Parks, a featherweight who once trained at Jackson's MMA and helped with their wrestling, is facing aggravated assault charges and was arrested by U.S. Marshals after allegedly beating his girlfriend so badly that she miscarried.

Officials from Jackson's MMA said they severed ties with Parks months ago. His last fight was a win in March.

Five questions that will be answered by UFC 152

Finally, we have a fight week after way too long of a break. Jon Jones is putting his belt on the line against Vitor Belfort, a middleweight. It's not the fight we want, but it's the fight we get. Here are a few questions that will be answered by Saturday night's fights in Toronto.

What does changing an opponent on short(ish) notice do to Jon Jones? If there has been one hallmark of Jon Jones' career, it's been good preparation. In every title defense, he has shown a complete knowledge of his opponents strengths and weakness. He then exploited those weakness for a win. This is why he wouldn't take Chael Sonnen on short notice. With Belfort, he had about a month to study up which is a shorter time than usual. If he's not prepared, the champ could end up beating himself.

Will Michael Bisping or Brian Stann be the (maybe possibly could be) next middleweight contender? UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva's next fight will be against Stephan Bonnar, but beyond UFC 153, he needs a new opponent. This could be decided with the Bisping/Stann match-up ... perhaps. If Silva decides he wants to fight only Georges St-Pierre or light heavyweights with middle names that start with a Q or take six months off, the Stann/Bisping winner could be left in the cold.

Can the flyweights steal the show? Joe Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson's bout to decide the inaugural flyweight champion was the headliner before the cancellation of UFC 151. Though they're not the main event of the night anymore, but that doesn't mean the 125-lbers won't be the stars of the show. The little guys tend to bring exciting fights. That should be no different on Saturday.

Does Matt Hamill still have it? It's been more than a year since Hamill ended his career -- for the first time -- with a loss to Alexander Gustafsson. He's back after a brief retirement, but will he still have the fire to get it done in the Octagon? He'll have a chance to show it against Roger Hollett.

Will fans tune in? UFC 152 was solid before the Jones/Belfort bout was cut together and pasted onto the poster. But people's response to the cancellation of UFC 151 was angry. It's possible the anger will carry over and keep fans from spending $54.95 on Saturday night.

Watch Joe Benavidez?s win over Miguel Torres (VIDEO)

With Joe Benavidez fighting Demetrious Johnson for the UFC's first flyweight title at UFC 152 on Saturday, spend some time watching Benavidez in the fight that earned him his first title shot. After Benavidez won this fight over Miguel Torres at WEC 47, he fought (and lost to) Dominick Cruz for the WEC bantamweight title.

If you want to skip past the introductions, go to the 2:10 mark. The second round starts about seven minutes in, and the finish is around the nine-minute mark.

Something to remember about this fight is that at this point, Torres had just shockingly lost the bantamweight title to Brian Bowles. He was still considered a top pound-for-pound fighter. Stephan Bonnar and Todd Harris, who were calling the fight, were surprised as Benavidez dominated the bout.

Will Benavidez score another big win on Saturday night? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Rampage Jackson Not Excited With Matt Hamill for UFC 130

by Michael David SmithRampage Jackson gets his hands raised over Lyoto Machida. After some shuffling around of the upcoming UFC 130 fight card, Rampage Jackson has gone from taking on Thiago Silva in the co-main event to fighting Matt Hamill in the main event. He's not particularly thrilled with the change.

"Thiago Silva is the type of guy I would love to fight because he has great stand up and he comes to fight most of the time, so I was looking forward to fighting a guy like that," Jackson said on The MMA Hour. "Matt Hamill wasn't on my radar at all. I wasn't excited at all. But then again, not a whole lot gets me excited."

Jackson's comments about not being excited for the fight stand in contrast to the comments of Hamill, who said he plans to break Jackson's will. But Jackson says that the difference between their public comments is simple: Hamill needs to convince himself that he can beat Jackson, while Jackson already knows that he can beat Hamill.

What happens when spinning backfists go wrong (VIDEO)

A spinning backfist is a stunning and thrilling way to knock out an opponent. It takes speed, balance and strength. To do it correctly, a fighter must have the ability to land the backfist perfectly while simultaneously preparing for his opponent's counterpunching. The most effective spinning backfists are done so quickly that an opponent has no time to prepare a defense.

None of that is on display in this video of Dillon Cleckler beating Matt Lawrence at Island Fights on Aug. 31.

UFC on FUEL TV 5 headliner Stipe Miocic has 'win no matter what' in mind vs. Struve

NOTTINGHAM, England - It is in many ways neither here nor there, but if Stipe Miocic was a dinosaur, he would be a velociraptor, he says.

Asking him this is something of a recent inside joke, but perhaps it applies to his Saturday fight against Stefan Struve in the main event of UFC on FUEL TV 5 in England.

After all, Struve clearly is one of those great big dinos -a brontosaurus, perhaps, in keeping with the metaphor. And Miocic will need to be that relentless and vicious much smaller velociraptor to take him out.

UFC 152's Magalhaes responds to Pokrajac's Twitter jab, Rogan commentary

Vinny Magalhaes can understand Igor Pokrajac's frustration, but he still thinks it's misguided.

Despite admitting backstage that his laziness led to Magalhaes' second-round armbar at UFC 152, Pokrajac took a jab at the submission ace on Twitter."If I wanted to do a grappling match I would go on a grappling tournament," the Croatian wrote on Monday.

Vitor Belfort admits he let up on Armbar attempt against Jon Jones

Middleweight Vitor Belfort may be a legend in the cage but he?s also human. The 35-year old nearly exited UFC 152 with the light heavyweight championship, overcoming tremendous odds in the process, when he locked up an Armbar on terrific title-holder Jon Jones in the first frame of their headlining fight, but in the end Jones was able to escape the submission attempt.

While some credit has to be given to Jones? tenacity and subsequent defense, it also appears Belfort slipped up while wrenching the 25-year old?s limb and likely cost himself the belt as a result.

?When I heard his arm pop, I let go a little and that is where he escaped,? explained Belfort at the post-event press conference. ?I made a mistake. He is a great fighter and I lost the opportunity.?

Belfort: “Don’t count the days, make the days count…”

Adding weight to Belfort?s statement, Jones admitted after the show that his arm suffered unknown damage during the exchange which he labeled as possibly involving nerve damage to his bicep.

Paul Mendez Tops DonYil Livingston; Woodland Controversial Again

WOODLAND, Calif. -- In a crossroads bout between two middleweights with common threads, Paul Mendez of Delano, Calif. was awarded a controversial 7th round TKO victory over DonYil Livingston after Mendez went well below the belt early in the round Saturday night at the Woodland Community & Senior Center in the eight-round main event of TeleFutura's Solo Boxeo. Livingston was unable to answer the count and a novice professional referee called the fight over, amidst confusion ringside.

To say Mendez (10-2-1, 4 KOs) was on his way to a decision victory might have been correct, but perhaps a stretch to assume, as Livingston (8-2-1, 4 KOs) only trailed 58-56 on two cards and 59-55 on the other. Had he won the final two rounds he could have eked out a draw against Mendez, which wasn't totally out of the question. Especially considering the way Livingston was starting to time him late in the fight.

Make no mistake, Mendez showed up readier to fight as he pressed the action and worked his jab diligently while doing the better work inside despite being the longer fighter. Livingston had a hard time getting off first and didn't try controlling the inside, which is where he should have been doing his best work. Livingston caught Mendez with a couple of counters and seemed to sit on those rather than make his own opportunities, which didn't help him on the scorecards.

Michael Bisping: ?I don't want to go out there in front of millions of people and get my ass kicked.?

UFC middleweight Michael Bisping has never shied away from speaking his mind even if it means rubbing a few people the wrong way. Likewise, when Bisping has been asked to give his thoughts on a potential title-shot he?s been more than happy to answer, not only expressing confidence in his ability to beat Brian Stann this weekend at UFC 152 but give champion Anderson Silva one helluva test too.

However, Bisping recently spoke to a group of media members where he made it clear he may be open to discussing the possibility of a showdown with Silva but isn?t looking past Stann just because he?ll talk about the future beyond their bout.

?I’d love to fight Anderson Silva one day, but, that might as well be a million miles away right now, because if I don’t beat Brian Stann in the foreseeable future, it isn’t going to happen anytime soon. So, I can answer questions and think about it, but I’m really not thinking about it,? explained Bisping (as transcribed by MMAFighting). ?Everything is completely focused on Brian Stann. The guy’s going to try to knock me out this weekend, and he’s good at doing that. I don’t want to go out there in front of millions of people and get my ass kicked. I’m not even thinking about Anderson Silva.?

Brash Brit Bisping Slams the Idea of Chris Weidman as #1 Contender

Beyond his own immediate schedule being booked, Bisping also knows Silva has his hands full at the moment with an October return to light heavyweight on the horizon. Silva, who stepped up last week help save the UFC 153 lineup, is set to face Stephan Bonnar. Of course, as grand a gesture as that might have been, Bisping doesn?t see Silva having any problems with ?The American Psycho?.

?Let’s be honest, more than likely, Anderson Silva’s going to decapitate him. I don’t think I’m saying anything too out there with that comment. Who knows? Stephan Bonnar is tough. He’ll give it a go. He’ll fight,? stated Bisping, giving Bonnar a smidge of credit, adding, ?I think Stephan Bonnar is going to do a better job than Forrest Griffin did.”

Chael Sonnen still training for Jon Jones, just in case

Chael Sonnen wants a fight with Jon Jones. He talked smack to the light heavyweight champ before Dan Henderson's pre-UFC 151 injury, he stepped up for a fight to try to save UFC 151, and he continued to needle Jones in the wake of UFC 151's cancellation.

Even now, with the fight less than a week away, he continues to train just in case Vitor Belfort pulls out of Saturday's UFC 152 bout. UFC president Dana White told USA Today that Sonnen is in fight camp.

"Chael Sonnen is in full training camp right now," White said. "He's been training since he got offered the Jones fight. He said, 'I'm in full camp right now because Vitor will get hurt and pull out, and it will be Jones vs. Sonnen, anyway."

Bravo, Chael. It's one thing to talk trash about how he will be ready in case Belfort pulls out of the fight with Jones. It's quite another to still train and prepare for a fight that isn't booked. That's not idle trash-talking.

Anderson Silva, Stephan Bonnar to meet as UFC 153 is put ?back on track?

On Tuesday, UFC 153 fell apart as Jose Aldo pulled out of the main event fight with Frankie Edgar with an injury just hours after Quinton Jackson pulled out of his bout with Glover Teixeira. Wednesday, the October card in Rio de Janeiro was glued back together with the help of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

As USA Today reported and Yahoo! Sports confirmed with UFC president Dana White, Silva will move up to light heavyweight to fight Stephan Bonnar in the three-round main event. Teixeira will now face fellow Brazilian Fabio Maldonado. Antonio Rodrigio Nogueira was filming a commercial with Silva when the UFC called about the Bonnar fight. He offered to fight and will now face Dave Herman.

The UFC was forced to scramble after injuries threatened another card. UFC 151 was recently canceled when Dan Henderson was injured light heavyweight champion Jon Jones turned down a bout with Chael Sonnen. Jones' refusal to fight caught White's ire so he was pleased to find his other champions would step up when needed.

[Insurance policy isn't to blame for spate of injuries in UFC]

"This is old-school UFC. A card is in jeopardy, but guys that are world champions and superstars stepped up and jumped in and saved the card. This is why the fans love this sport and why we went on a 12-year run without canceling an event."

Bonnar getting the call to fight Silva is a surprise as so many middleweights are clamoring to fight for the belt. His last fight was a decision over Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 139. Bonnar is best known for his bout with Forrest Griffin at the first finale of "The Ultimate Fighter." Their thrilling bout is credited for helping build the UFC into the company it is today.

Since that bout in 2005, his career has been up and down. At 14-7, he doesn't have the resume to earn a title shot, but his willingness to take a fight on short notice and the fact that Silva's belt is not on the line created the perfect storm for Bonnar to get the big fight.

Though he's dominated at middle weight for years, Silva has fought at light heavyweight before. In 2009, he knocked out former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in the first round. He knocked out James Irvin in 1:01 in 2008.

Silva and Nogueira both fought on UFC 134, the first Brazilian card since 1998. They both won by knockout in front of a raucous crowd. It's not surprising to see them both want to take on fights in front of their home crowd again.

Jon Jones, Cub Swanson and Vinny Magalhaes: UFC 152?s Three Stars

After waiting way too long for fights, UFC 152 delivered with mostly exciting bouts. There's no need to discuss Matt Hamill's bout with Roger Hollett. Instead, let's talk about the fighters who truly stood out on Saturday night in Toronto. Here are Cagewriter's three stars. Tell us yours in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

No. 1 star -- Jon Jones: The light heavyweight champion has barely faced adversity in fights, but Vitor Belfort gave it to him with an early armbar attempt. Jones got out of the submission, and then beat up Belfort for four rounds until an Americana submission ended the fight in the fourth round.

No. 2 star -- Cub Swanson: His knockout of Charles Oliveira was one of the weirder knockouts in recent memory. Oliveira was hurt by a body shot. Swanson then hit Oliveira with a left in the head, and Oliveira stood there for a second before falling to the ground. Slow motion knockouts are just as effective, and Swanson is now 3-0 in 2012. Every win was by knockout.

No. 3 star -- Vinny Magalhaes: It's been three years since Magalhaes was in the UFC. He reminded fans of his grappling prowess with a perfectly executed armbar of Igor Pokrajac. It was the exact move you would expect out of a jiu-jitsu world champ.

Manny Pacquiao Dominates Shane Mosley

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao defeated Shane Mosley via a unanimous decision in Las Vegas.Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he's the biggest attraction in boxing, dominating Shane Mosley on Saturday night to win a one-sided unanimous decision in the biggest fight of the year.

Although Mosley came out fighting hard with a good first round, it was all Pacquiao from there on. Pacquiao knocked Mosley down in the third and dominated the fight throughout. Technically Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round, but in reality Pacquiao fell when Mosley tripped him, and the referee made a mistake in calling it a knockdown. In reality, Mosley never had Pacquiao in any trouble, at any point in the fight.

All three judges awarded it to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed exactly 100 more punches than Mosley did (182 to 82) and threw more than twice as many punches (552 to 260).

UFC President Dana White responded harshly when asked about the crowd booing tonight’s flyweight title fight. Stephan Bonnar: ?It's just amazing how overnight I go from my phone never ringing to the coolest guy around.?

Not many people would consider themselves fortunate to be fighting the best pound-for-pound Mixed Martial Artist in the sport in his hometown without a full camp to prepare for the bout. Then again, Stephan Bonnar has never been anything other than extraordinarily unique.

Bonnar has been entertaining fans since first emerging on the original Ultimate Fighter and solidified his spot in UFC history thanks to his performance against Forrest Griffin at the finale. Now he?s on the cusp of the biggest opportunity of his career when it looked like his run in the Octagon might be at an end.

The 35-year old ?American Psycho? recently opened up on his October outing against Anderson Silva and, rather than show concern or ask to have his back patted, Bonnar?s attitude was one of overwhelming appreciation.

?It’s just amazing how overnight I go from my phone never ringing to the coolest guy around,? said Bonnar in an interview with MMAJunkie. ?He’s the best guy on everyone’s pound-for-pound list, he’s got 15 straight UFC victories, been a champion for six years or so. It’s great, though, because I feel like I have nothing to lose. Fighting Anderson in his backyard, I’m a record-setting underdog. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Prior to the pairing Bonnar considered himself a former fighter for the most part after failing to land a big match-up as he hoped he would after seven years in the sport and a three-fight winning streak under his belt. To hear Bonnar tell it, he?s still having to pinch himself after landing the scrap with Silva.

Bonnar Explains Frustration with Lack of a Marquee Fight

?It really went from me being retired to the biggest fight I could ever dream of having ? overnight. Life is funny sometimes,? he said contentedly.

UFC 153 is scheduled for October 13 in Rio de Janeiro.

Since the announcement of the last ONE FC event, people have been waiting for the return of Shinya Aoki to the cage, and those in attendance on the sixth will get to see it. UFC Middleweight Division, Revisited

A couple of months ago, I looked at the state of the UFC & StrikeForce middleweight divisions, and proposed a few potential match-ups that made sense at the time.
