Quick Jabs: The Super Six Gets Back On Track -- More Good News; Alfredo Angulo Overdoses On Genius Pills; Paul Williams Destroys Floyd Mayweather; More
Turn that frown upside down, kiddo. Showtime's super middleweight tournament is back on solid footing, with Andre Ward-Andre Dirrell and Arthur Abraham-Carl Froch booked for Nov. 27 and, for some inside-baseball reasons, Allan Green staying in the tourney against someone or the other, giving the winner of that bout a knockout's chance of advancing to the semifinals. What will we panic about now????
Actually, once November and December come, things are looking up for the ol' tempermental beast that is boxing, as a whole. You got your Ward-Dirrell and Abraham-Froch, which, dang, Showtime, why you gotta put that on the same date as Juan Manuel Marquez's lightweight championship defense against Michael Katsidis on HBO? But, OK, better to have three killer fights on one night than none, the way we've had lately. Anyway, also coming up before year's end we have the Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez rematch on HBO on Nov. 20 for the middleweight championship of the world, rightly deemed the second-best fight that can be made in boxing behind only Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather. We got another network duel on Dec. 11, with Showtime airing its bantamweight tournament kickoff with Yonnhy Perez-Joseph Agbeko II and Abner Mares-Vic Darchinyan, plus HBO airing the premium junior welterweight clash between Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana.
Thass a nice stretch of boxing, homes. Too bad it's September.
Let's Quick Jab this out.
Kelly Pavlik's Fight With Bryan Lee Vera is 'Life and Death'
Filed under: WBC, WBO, Boxing Rumors, HBO, Top Rank Promotions
Former WBO and WBC middleweight (160 pounds) champion, Kelly Pavlik, of Youngstown, Ohio, called his Nov. 13 bout against Bryan Lee Vera, of Austin, Tex., "Life and death for me as a fighter," adding, "I must win," and, "The future is now."
Pavlik (36-2, 32 knockouts) will face Vera (17-5, 11 KOs) in a clash of 28-year-olds on the under card of a main event at The Dallas Cowboys Stadium that will feature an HBO pay per view televised bout between seven-time champ and WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) and former titlist Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) for the vacant WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown.
Pavlik will be in the ring for the first time since April, when he was dethroned by southpaw Sergio Martinez following a unanimous decision loss in Atlantic City.
Pavlik earned the crown in September of 2007, in Atlantic City, when his seventh-round knockout dethroned Jermain Taylor as undisputed champion, stopping the Arkansas resident for the first time in his career.
Pavlik then earned a non-title decision over Taylor in their return bout before defending his crown three times with stoppages of Gary Lockett, Marco Antonio Rubio, and, Miguel Espino, respectively, in the third, ninth, and, fifth rounds.

After lackluster loss to Oliveira, Escudero cut by the UFC
After his less-than-thrilling loss to Charles Oliveira, "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Efrain Escudero has been cut from the UFC. He Tweeted the news, and said that he was talking to Strikeforce and Bellator.
When Escudero won Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter," he looked like a fighter with unlimited potential. But between that win over Phillippe Nover for the TUF title and the loss to Oliveira, Escudero lost something. He looked tentative in the Oliveira match before getting submitted. The fighter who had TKO'ed Cole Miller missed weight and mugged for the crowd instead of working to win the fight.
Escudero is just the second TUF winner to be cut by the organization. Travis Lutter, who blew weight before his scheduled title bout with Anderson Silva, is the other.
UFC 119: Melvin Guillard Beats Jeremy Stephens

Julio Cesar Chavez, Manny Pacquiao to Spar, Train Together
Filed under: WBA, WBC, WBO, Golden Boy Promotions, Boxing Rumors, HBO, FanHouse Exclusive, Top Rank Promotions
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is expected to arrive next Thursday, Oct. 7, in Baguio City, Philippines, where he will train and spar with Manny Pacquiao, as the two fighters prepare for upcoming fights, according to Pacquiao's adviser, Michael Koncz.
The 24-year-old Chavez (40-0-1, 30 knockouts) will face Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KOs) on Dec. 4 at The Pond in Anaheim, Calif., this after having been an early consideration to meet WBA junior middleweight king Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs) on that date.
The 31-year-old Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs), already the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) champion, will pursue his eighth crown in as many different weight classes opposite former titlist Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) of Mexico when they clash in an HBO pay-per-view televised bout for the WBC's vacant junior middleweight crown on Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium.
UFC 119 main-card recap: Mir scores knockout win, Bader outlasts "Little Nog"
Of course, conventional wisdom assumed "Cro Cop" would be willing to take a chance at some point in the main event of the pay-per-view card.
Instead, Mir and Filipovic engaged in 14 minutes of one of the least memorable fights in recent history before the former heavyweight champion unleashed a knee to the chin that left the Croatian kickboxer out cold on the mat.

Guillard starts off UFC 119 main card with split decision win
INDIANAPOLIS -- Melvin Guillard won a split decision over Jeremy Stephens at UFC 119, 29-28, 28-29 and 30-27. This is Guillard's third win in a row
Stephens started the round by knocking down Guillard, but the tide quickly changed. With strong movement and powerful punches, Guillard ruled the first round. He got the better of each exchange with Stephens, and even showboated a bit when avoiding strikes.
In the second round, Stephens attacked with more leg kicks, while Guillard focused his attack on Stephens' body. The round was interrupted twice as both fighters received unintentional shots to the groin.
Stephens complained of a groin strike halfway through the round. Stephens was given a second to recover, and the fight continued without crowd complaint. However, when Stephens landed a clear kick to Guillard's groin, Conseco Fieldhouse became filled with boos.
For the third round, Guillard continued with body shots, kicks and impressive movement. Stephens had a shot near the end of the fight when he wobbled Guillard with a punch, but then missed on a flying knee right after, giving up his opportunity to end the bout.
"I trained hard and I felt like I did enough to get the win tonight. I did more and I honestly don’t think he hit me in the face one time," Guillard said after the fight. "I knew he wanted to stand and bang. I was a state champion in wrestling and a brown belt in judo so I could’ve taken it to the ground but I wanted to stick to my game plan.”

Konrad dominates Grabowski in Bellator heavyweight tournament
Cole Konrad won a mostly boring, but dominant, decision over Damian Grabowski, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, in Bellator's heavyweight semifinals on Thursday in Milwaukee.
Konrad started with an immediate takedown, then followed up with knees in Grabowski's side. His control from the top, with scattered knees and punches, continued for the rest of the round. Grabowski barely did anything throughout the round.
He took a bit longer to get the takedown in the second round, actually throwing a punch and controlling Grabowski in the clinch before easily taking him to the ground. The referee tired of the grapplefest halfway through the second and stood the two fighters up. It didn't take long for Konrad to take the fight right back down to the ground, and even went for a submission, grabbing Grabowski's arm in a kimura attempt. It didn't work out, but it's a big step for the NCAA champion wrestler.
You're never going to guess what Konrad did to start the third and final round. Did you guess take Grabowski down? Then you were right! But this time, Grabowski was able to get out from under Konrad. Grabowski even tried for a takedown and guillotine. Neither were successful, and Konrad scored another takedown, controlling the bout until the final bell.
Konrad will now face Neil Grove in the finals of Bellator's inaugural heavyweight tournament. Grove is a dangerous striker and will provide interesting match-up for Konrad's wrestling.

Dream 16: Omigawa, Takaya, Hansen Impress in Featherweight Bouts
The best featherweights fighting in Japanese MMA these days are Dream champion Bibiano Fernandes and Sengoku champion Marlon Sandro. But many of the best of the rest were in the ring Saturday at Dream 16, a fight card that featured five featherweight bouts.
Of the 10 featherweight fighters in action, the best of the bunch was Michihiro Omigawa, who beat the American Cole Escovedo with a straight arm bar two and a half minutes into the first round. The submission appeared to break Escovedo's arm and showed once again that Omigawa is one of the truly elite fighters in the 145-pound and under class. Omigawa has been one of the sport's most active fighters over the last couple of years, fighting seven times in 2009 and three so far this year. He's also been one of the best, climbing up the featherweight rankings by going 8-1-1 since the start of 2009.

Andre Ward-Andre Dirrell, Arthur Abraham-Carl Froch Set For Nov. 27
Filed under: WBA, WBC, Boxing Rumors, Showtime, FanHouse Exclusive
The originally scheduled Sept. 25 Showtime Super Six World Super Middleweight (168 pounds) Classic bout between WBA king Andre Ward (pictured above, at right) and challenger Andre Dirrell, and the one between Arthur Abraham and former WBC titlist Carl Froch that was slated for Oct. 2 have been rescheduled as a Nov. 27 double-header, Showtime Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports, Ken Hershman, announced on Friday.
Part of the third stage of the Super Six Classic, the match up between Froch (26-1, 20 knockouts), of England, and, Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs), of Germany, was moved from Monaco to Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland, this, after Froch suffered a back injury.
Ward (22-0, 13 knockouts) and the switch-hitting Dirrell (19-1, 13 KOs) still does not have a determined site.
"Ward and Dirrell will be at a venue to be announced, but everyone is committed to that date," Showtime spokesman Chris DeBlasio told The Associated Press. "After a lot of behind closed-doors meetings, it really is right back where we started. Things have sort of come around full circle."
Apologetic UFC 119 winner Melvin Guilllard wants Takanori Gomi, title shot next
But following the victory, which was his sixth in his past seven fights, Guillard was all apologies, and he said the performance isn't indicative of his fighting ability.
But he also knows a win is a win, so he's already looking ahead to a possible bout with Takanori Gomi and a long-awaited title shot in 2011.
