'Fighter' Q&A With 'Irish' Micky Ward

The similarities between retired boxer Micky Ward and actor Mark Wahlberg are seemingly as endless as they are astounding. Each grew up in Massachusetts as among the younger members of a nine-member, Irish family. Their initials are MW. They were rough-and-tumble youth.

And, lately, it seems that the duo is sharing the mutual admiration, praise, and, adoration of the world, if not, the nation.

Since the movie, "The Fighter," was released on Dec. 10, in selected theaters, and, nationwide, on Dec. 17, the world has learned of the story of Irish Micky Ward. As portrayed by Wahlberg, The Fighter, is focused on Ward's life in the blue-collar streets of Lowell, Mass., from which he successfully rises to become a fringe world titlist even as he is one of nine adult children in a dysfunctional family run by their hard-scrabble mother.

The buzzed-about film already has gained Oscar attention and has been named the "Best Sports Movie of the Decade" by "Sports Illustrated." Christian Bale plays Ward's drug-addicted half-brother Dicky Eklund, and Bale and Wahlberg recently graced the SI cover. Wahlberg has received a Golden Globe Best Actor nomination, and Ward has been the subject of an infinite amount of interviews, including this Q&A with FanHouse.
