?Cowboy? Cerrone shows off his UFC 160 battle scars

Lightweight Donald Cerrone got back on the winning track with a dominating decision over K.J. Noons at UFC 160. Plenty of blood was spilled during the bout. Though Noons took the most damage in the bout, Cerrone didn't escape unscathed. He showed off his wounds on Instagram after the bout, saying. "Sometimes you get cool scars to show people!"

Yep, those cuts and bruises should bring about some pretty cool scars.

Teon Kennedy: Don't Call It A Comeback

(Guillermo Rigondeaux, left; Teon Kennedy, right)

Teon Kennedy’s not a household name. Not by any means. In fact, he’s not even a particularly well-known figure amongst boxing fans and most of you reading this probably won’t bother to tune in and watch his return to the ring this Saturday.

It’s not that he’s without merit (he won the NABA junior featherweight belt back in 2011), but he’s probably best remembered for the drubbing he received last September at the hands of Guillermo Rigondeaux. He got schooled that night; beaten all ends up by the guy I consider to have the second best pound-for-pound skill-set in the sport, behind Floyd Mayweather and just ahead of Andre Ward, who operates in a division which places greater emphasis on physical strength and therefore grants him less scope to display his pure boxing ability. Like the rest of us mere mortals, Kennedy is not in possession of such gifts. But that’s not to say he’s in any way a bad fighter. After all, as the late Emmanuel Steward observed so aptly that night against Rigondeaux, even in crushing defeat he wasn’t making any serious mistakes. He simply found himself in against a guy several levels above him. Or, to put it more tangibly, he found himself knocked down within 90 seconds of the opening bell, and quickly realised that he had no way of stopping his opponent from landing his signature left hand.

There was a telling moment late in the second round that night, when Rigondeaux set his feet in the centre of the ring and began measuring the straight left. I mean really measuring it, almost as if he were at a dress rehearsal for the fight rather than the event itself.  HBO described it as a “full body feint,” but that adds a dynamism to the movement that was absent at the time. He slowly extended his arm on two occasions, like a child who has just begun their first karate lesson, then exploded it a few seconds later. There was no hint of a jab to set up the shot, yet it still sent Kennedy flying across the ring. It was the sort of moment that makes you feel profoundly sorry for a fighter, when they find themselves in a situation where they are so patently outclassed, so obviously beaten all ends up that not even the most enterprising ringside strategist could devise a method for them to claw their way back into the contest. You can usually see it in their faces, too. It’s a scenario the forces the features to contort uniquely, gradually becoming a bizarrely amalgamated vision of fear, confusion, disbelieve, and deep felt embarrassment.

The fight with Rigondeaux was eventually stopped in the 5th round, after Kennedy had been knocked down five times in all, but it was always unlikely that the defeat was going to signal the end for him.  He was only 26 then -- he’ll turn 27 next month -- so it would have been absurd to hang up his gloves, even after being so thoroughly dominated. I don’t believe he will let the defeat ruin him, despite what has happened to so many young prospects in the past. Rather, I believe he’s been forced to come to terms with the fact that he can’t compete with the top guys in his division. He’s had to accept his limitations and move on to lesser challenges. For a sport that prides itself on the mantra that its participants should be prepared to die in the ring, this is a curious third way: an odd, winding route between the glory of beating all comers and the grudging respect afforded to those who are willing to lay their lives on the line in defeat.

A quick look at Kennedy’s Twitter page reveals a man who has embraced this tertiary route. Still clearly immersed in the sport, he runs five miles every day before driving his kids to school and getting down to business in the gym.  That he operates below the uppermost skill levels does not diminish this. If anything, it makes him that much more relatable. It’s very easy to let athletes such as Kennedy slip between the cracks, a fact that becomes suddenly obvious when you consider that we don’t even really have a name for fighters in his situation. It would be a stretch to label him a serious contender, but losing to a pound-for-pound opponent does not a journeyman make. And while he’s no world level or elite fighter, he’s certainly not a bum, either. There really isn’t an adequate way to term guys like him: those who are young enough to be actively dedicating the best years of their lives to the sport, and are fortunate enough to appear on TV every so often and make enough money not to have to work a second job. They’re not gatekeepers yet -0 that’s a label that comes with far more experience -- but to call them “average” or “regular” fighters does them a disservice. There’s nothing ordinary about the time and effort they dedicate to their craft.

That Kennedy is making his return the weekend after Carl Froch found vindication in his decision win over Mikkel Kessler in London is -- in that deliciously crooked way seemingly monopolised by boxing -- strangely apt. After all, Froch is a guy who has suffered a comprehensive defeat of his own in the past, to the aforementioned Andre Ward in 2011. The scorecards might have been relatively close that night, but they didn’t reflect the reality of the bout. Froch was beaten every way by a guy who was simply too fast, too slippery, too smart, and too strong. Since then, however, he has waged war on his division with renewed vigour, reasserting himself as the second best super middleweight fighter in the process and proving to be a man with almost superhuman levels of resolve. As a result, he can now make a good case for having fought his way back to the position of being able to legitimately challenge his conqueror once more, which I guess is really all he could ever have hoped for.

If he were to triumph in the rematch, and it’s a big if, it would arguably be the most significant victory for a British fighter since Joe Calzaghe blew Jeff Lacy out of the water back in 2006. Lacy went downhill rapidly after that, on a trajectory all too familiar to fight fans. He’s talked about as a hype job now, someone who was created by the marketing men at Showtime in order to fool American audiences into subscribing. It’s typical revisionist dishonesty, and testament to boxing’s need to pigeon hole its personnel into diametrically opposed camps. Make no mistake, Lacy was a good fighter, albeit one who bought into his own mythology a little too much. What happened was simply a case of his being outclassed by a much better opponent, letting the defeat get to him, then subsequently losing the not insignificant talent he had in the first place.

When put like that, it’s no wonder tales like Lacy’s are the ones that resonate most vividly in our consciousness as fans. After all, they contain every ingredient necessary to form the perfect boxing cocktail.  Natural talent is blended with the more macabre elements of exploitation, self-doubt and destruction, with just a pinch of fair-weather friendships and media sycophancy thrown in for good measure.  They are tales of tragedy in the classical style, and have their manifestations across all generations and weight classes. Yet they are not the sole route for beaten fighters, and it’s important for us fans to maintain some perspective.  For while there will always be the occasional Jeff Lacy -- guys who fall so hard and so spectacularly -- the vast majority of fighters who find themselves outclassed in the ring simply step back down to their level and continue to operate. They might not be as much fun to read about, but they’re there. And they deserve our respect for not falling apart.

To this end, I present Teon Kennedy: Not a bum, but not a hype job either.  Rather, someone who operates in that interstitial space that bears no pugilistic title. Most likely he’ll become a gatekeeper as he ages and his resume deepens, but for now he operates in the vast, diaphanous cavern between journeyman and contender, heady enough to put him well above the majority of fighters around the world, but not sufficiently high as to launch him into the rarified “elite” camp: the hallowed ground we picture when we daydream, upon which all fighters wish they could ultimately stand.

The Week?s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Carl Froch, Delvin Rodriguez And Roman Gonzalez

Gotta love Giovani Segura – not only is he an action hero, but he’s pushing the already stretched frontiers of sponsorship in boxing by emblazoning the name of a registration services company on his Julio Cesar Chavez style headband. Who knows what this week will bring in terms of advertising, but it’ll have some good boxing. Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler fight on HBO in a card made only slightly less appetizing by the scratching of the Jean Pascal vs. Lucian Bute co-feature. There’s also a few other bits and bobs, so check it out.

  • Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch II, Saturday, HBO, London. Has it really been three years since these guys last fought? Geez, time flies when people are punching each other in the face. The intervening time hasn’t done much to take the lustre off this super middleweight match-up. Since Kessler’s original victory, Froch (30-2, 22 KO) has enhanced his prestige with his ridiculously competitive schedule while the Dane has mainly treaded water. A full preview will be along later in the week, but I reckon this will be similar to the original war, at least to start with. But Kessler (46-2, 35 KO) will show his age after the early rounds and the gritty Froch will take over, eventually grinding out a stoppage win. On the untelevised undercard, British super middleweight George Groves (18-0, 14 KO) takes on Noe Gonzalez Alcoba (30-2, 22 KO) in a fight that doesn’t really get my blood pumping. Another rematch features light heavyweight contenders Tony Bellew (19-1-1, 12 KO) and Isaac Chilemba (20-1-2, 9 KO), who fought to a draw in March. The original was an absorbing, if frustrating, contest in which neither man really did enough to win. Both should come in to the do-over extra motivated, and as such I favour Bellew. He was less impressive last time out and has more to gain from improving.
  • Delvin Rodriguez vs. Freddy Hernandez, Friday, ESPN2, Uncasville Conn. A nice little Friday Night Fights main event pitting perennial junior middleweight contender and all round nice guy Rodriguez (27-6-3, 15 KO) against Mexico City battler Freddy Hernandez (30-4, 20 KO). Hernandez’ best victory is over a diminished Luis Collazo. Rodriguez is way more technically sound and won’t oblige the Mexican by getting involved in trading or mauling – he’ll pick him off from the outside all night long.
  • The Rest. Not a whole lot. The sport’s littlest action hero, junior flyweight Roman Gonzalez (34-0, 28 KO), fights at home in Nicaragua on Saturday against the unheralded Ronald Barrera (31-11-2, 19 KO)… It’s been a big month for Argentine boxing and junior bantamweight Omar Narvaez (38-1-2, 20 KO) continues that, taking on Felipe Orucuta (27-1, 23 KO) in Buenos Aires.

Juan Manuel Marquez Emphasizes One Half Of The Word "Prizefighter" Against Timothy Bradley

(Juan Manuel Marquez [left] and Timothy Bradley [right])

The principles of life, often disregarded in the name of sport, have shaped what could be one of the top technical bouts of the year between Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez and Timothy "The Desert Storm" Bradley. The welterweight 12-rounder for Bradley's WBO title is set for Sept. 14 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

The basis of sport usually isn't grounded in any "what is right/what is wrong" system. It is sometimes founded on the grounds of what’s most logical, but often on the grounds of finance and relatedly, a dash of selfishness or greed. Marquez threw the common sporting thesis out the window, the one that said he'd take a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao, even after sinking him with one right hand in round six of their December 2012 fight.

That isn't the way a boxer with eyes on the biggest possible paycheck conducts himself. Marquez fights with dignity. He loves a new challenge. He has said as much in explaining his motive for pursuing a Bradley bout rather than another Pacquiao rematch.

When he defeated Pacquiao in the fourth meeting, he proved himself as the better fighter in a back-and-forth war. That was the fight to decide all Pacquiao-Marquez fights after a three-fight trilogy featuring two controversial defeats and a draw for Marquez. Whatever the judges thought, a good number of fans felt his spot-on precision counterpunching won him all three. At nearly 40 years old, why return to the series?

Finance would be a reason. He was supposedly offered a substantial amount of money for a fifth battle with Pacquiao, even though he remained the pay-per-view "B" side. But a well-rounded man like Marquez, one who has been around the bend, is wise, and has more to fight for than cash. Money isn't the sole reason he fights; he wants to put on a show, impress the crowd. And he isn't going to have his career taken advantage of.

So that brings us to Juan Manuel Marquez against Timothy Bradley. HBO PPV plans to broadcast, with a full show to be announced later.

Bradley is coming off two heavily controversial bouts. The first was in June of last year against "Pac-Man" Pacquiao himself. Bradley took a title-winning split decision over 12 rounds that the majority of viewers thought he lost. Afterwards, Bradley put on a gutsy title defense against Russian slugger Ruslan Provodnikov. Despite being badly hurt and put on the deck in rounds 1 and 12, he fought through the most damaging bout of his career to edge a close decision.

Both of these fights forced Bradley to adapt and evolve to defend his now 30-0 record. Provodnikov caught him hard in round 1 with his snapping right hand and continued to batter him through round 3, but Bradley regained his composure and boxed very well until the 12th round knockdown in which he was forced to painfully sponge what consciousness he had left into a unanimous decision victory.

The Pacquiao fight was a learning experience for Bradley. He was outgunned against Pacquiao but showed merit with basic fundamentals, including a very solid jab/right hand combination he used to take three of the 12 rounds on my personal scorecard.

Forced to endure floods of hate-mail -- including fruitless death threats from enraged viewers -- Bradley was left in a tight position: What should he do next in his boxing career? He has now left behind the disputed "I beat Pacquiao" topic in hopes of beginning a new chapter. A victory over Marquez will leave his welterweight title gold shining brightest.

Marquez against Bradley is a fight the most die-hard boxing fan can affirmatively cheer about: These are two domineering, elite level boxers, after all. But how will it sell to the general public, which sometimes values bloodshed over technique?

Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather talk the talk; they are very defined personalities, with Mayweather playing the foul-mouthed dictator and Pacquiao playing the humble-minded warrior. That was always an interesting dynamic to their rivalry. There was always a slowly-burning fire inside the heart of every boxing fan that said each fight was building to something more -- perhaps a throwdown between each other? While no significant evidence suggested it would ever happen, fans were driven by the idea.

How does one market Bradley-Marquez? Top Rank Promotions is a socially integrated, modernly adapted and well-groomed company. You will see the television adverts, perhaps HBO's  “24/7,” assorted promotional tidbits and much more. My question is what will truly land the fans in the seats of the Thomas & Mack Center and tapping the "order" button on their remotes?

The common enemy? Both fighters have scored upset victories over Pacquiao, and their names are forever connected for that reason.

The intriguing stories? Marquez is a hard-nosed Mexican willing to bring a show in every fight. Bradley is a young, relatable small-town Californian many consider one of the top rising stars in the fight game.

The raw substance? Bradley is a well-skilled boxer with sturdy all-around ability. He has a solid jab, knows to work the body and keep up the lateral movement, but he isn't fearful of taking a punch and engaging toe-to-toe when necessary. Marquez is a well-tuned counterpuncher with a great right hand and controlled aggression which makes him a thrilling twist to the traditional Mexican fighting style.

Perhaps it will be some of all of the above. This is a complex operation that Top Rank’s Bob Arum and his public relations gurus will be working hard on for the months leading up to the bout.

With so many factors involved and title supremacy on the line, Bradley and Marquez will duke it out in a Mexican Independence-themed war on Sept. 14. All of the questions will surely be answered.

Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Why MMA Fans Should Care

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley will fight Saturday night in Las Vegas. We'll have full results and live round-by-round scoring for Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley on Saturday night, which may lead to a few readers wondering, What's boxing news doing on an MMA site? Here are five reasons why you, if you're an MMA fan, should care about Pacquiao vs. Mosley:

1. It's the biggest combat sports event of the year.
For as much as the UFC has gained on -- and in some respects surpassed -- the popularity of boxing, the biggest fights in boxing still exceed the biggest fights in the UFC in terms of pay-per-view buys and worldwide media attention. Although the MGM Grand in Las Vegas obviously won't attract nearly as many fans as the 55,000 who came out to see Georges St. Pierre in Toronto, Pacquiao vs. Mosley will surely get more pay-per-view buys in the United States, far more mainstream media attention and far more attention globally, as Pacquiao is a draw throughout Asia and the single biggest celebrity in the Philippines, a country of nearly 100 million people. This is a major worldwide sporting event.

Pound-For-Pound Top 20 Boxers Update, 5/13

(Apr 13, 2013; New York, NY, USA; Guillermo Rigondeaux celebrates his 12-round unanimous decision win over Nonito Donaire [not shown] at Radio City Music Hall. Credit: Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports)

It's been an eventful 1.5 months for boxing's best. Some of the fighters are new to this list of the top in the world regardless of weight -- four, in fact. One of them is Guillermo Rigondeaux. But where? And who are the others? Read on to find out. And remember, the predominant standard is "quality wins, especially of recent vintage," with other standards -- such as a simple assessment of an fighter's overall talent and form -- secondary.

1. Floyd Mayweather, welterweight

Whatever you thought of Robert Guerrero's chances coming into this past weekend, Mayweather was impressive in dismantling a top-5 welterweight. It solidified his claim to the pound-for-pound throne, abetted by the inactivity of his consensus top threat, super middleweight champion Andre Ward. A September return for Floyd is a "maybe."

2. Juan Manuel Marquez, welterweight

We won't see Marquez again until September against Timothy Bradley in what figures as a nice match-up between experienced pro vs. talented youngster, both with fresh action credentials to boot. He's higher on this list than Ward because his best win (over Manny Pacquiao) is better than anything Ward has done, mostly.

3. Andre Ward, super middleweightt

Ward is due back in August, although hopefully it won't be against the winner of Sakio Bika-Marco Antonio Periban owing to alphabet belt politics. There can't be a soul outside of Bika and his family -- not even the biggest Ward fans -- who want to see a rematch of Ward-Bika, the foulingest match-up of the last few years.

4. Sergio Martinez, middleweight

OK, if you're going based on "current form," Martinez is hard to defend as a top-5 choice after looking so old and shaky against Martin Murray last month. But as close as the fight was, it wasn't some robbery that the decision went his way, so he'll instead be a very vulnerable #4 for a while.

5. Manny Pacquiao, welterweight

Pacquiao moves up thanks to previous #5 Nonito Donaire's loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux. It doesn't feel right to have him this high, but then, it's not like the Pac-Man's overall resume sucks, right? And he beat Timothy Bradley last year despite the official loss, don't forget. And lost to a very good Marquez.

6. Abner Mares, featherweight

Mares proved himself in yet another weight class, demonstrating featherweight power against Daniel Ponce De Leon, even if the stoppage was bunk. He leapfrogs Carl Froch, too. While Froch's highs are higher, the difference between the two men with brutal schedules is this: Froch has lost some of them, and Mares hasn't.

7. Carl Froch, super middleweight

That said, Froch could be right back above Mares and maybe even Pacquiao by the next update, since he's facing Mikkel Kessler later this month. It's one of the highlights of the summer schedule, even if it's a bummer that the HBO pairing of Kessler-Froch II with Jean Pascal-Lucian Bute is off due to a Bute injury.

8. Wladimir Klitschko, heavyweight

Ho-hum. The world's top heavyweight just beat another no-hoper last weekend, Francesco Pianeta, and his domination of substandard competition is getting very old. There's hope of things getting better if the Alexander Povetkin bout happens, but not much better, and based on the history of those two, it could still fall through.

9. Timothy Bradley, welterweight

Donaire's exit from the top 10, as well as the exit of Brian Viloria, gives Bradley an opening to return. The Transnational Boxing Rankings Board went with Guillermo Rigondeaux and left Donaire in after him, which is something I seriously considered myself.

10. Vitali Klitschko, heavyweight

Like his brother, Vitali deserves some credit for sustained dominance -- even though he isn't doing anything these days, although it looks like he's going to continue his career and plans to face Bermane Stiverne next in a decent scrap. In the meantime, he's creeping up on one year of inactivity.

11. Guillermo Rigodeaux, junior featherweight

Putting Rigo higher is a-OK coming off the Donaire win last month, although top-5ish as ESPN has him is a bit much for my tastes. He's more than a one-win fighter, but without that one win he's not even in the top 20.

12. Nonito Donaire, junior featherweight

Donaire's overall resume protects him from dropping out of the list the way some others did with this update. But why Ring saw fit to have Donaire over Rigo even after Donaire lost to Rigo is baffling.

13. Bernard Hopkins, light heavyweight

Hopkins plans a quicker than usual ring return against Karo Murat in July, but that win won't do much for him; Murat is a top-10 light heavy, but beating him wouldn't prove much.

14. Roman Gonzalez, junior flyweight

With Juan Francisco Estrada beating Viloria in April, Gonzalez's own win over Estrada looks better than it did last year. As such, he leaps up a few spots.

15. Adrien Broner, lightweight

Broner could regain a spot on Gonzalez, though, depending on how he looks in a move up to welterweight in June against Paulie Malignaggi. Not that Malignaggi's a killer win, but a successful big weight leap would be impressive.

16. Chad Dawson, light heavyweight

Dawson, too, could be in line to restore some of his p4p stock by the next update, as he faces dangerous 168-pound puncher Adonis Stevenson in June.

17. Mikkel Kessler, super middleweight

See Froch, above. Kessler could be sniffing top-10 status if he pulls off a repeat of his years-ago defeat of Froch in what was a close but clear win.

18. Mikey Garcia, featherweight

Mikey is one of two Garcia's making his debut in the top 20, mainly on the strength of the Orlando Salido win and the eyeball test. He can solidify his standing with a win over Juan Manuel Lopez next month.

19. Danny Garcia, junior welterweight

This Garcia has established himself as the top 140-pounder in a top-heavy division, and while he doesn't pass the eyeball test the same as Mikey, he keeps beating solid fighters, like Zab Judah a couple weekends ago.

20. Saul Alvarez, junior middleweight

Austin Trout was in the #20 spot before Alvarez beat him last month, so it was a toss-up between Alvarez and previously ranked Robert Guerrero/Viloria or Estrada. The nod goes to Alvarez because he won his last fight and has a deeper resume than Estrada.

Honorable mentions: Robert Guerrero, Juan Francisco Estrada, Brian Viloria, Austin Trout, Miguel Cotto, Anselmo Moreno, David Haye, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Devon Alexander, Chris John, Erislandy Lara

Previewing The Mammoth Atlantic City Undercard For Lamont Peterson Vs. Lucas Matthysse

(A cast of thousands, from left: Anthony Peterson; Devon Alexander; Lamont Peterson; Lee Purdy; Anthony Ogogo)

If you're headed to Atlantic City this weekend for one of the year's best main events -- the junior welterweight scrap between Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse -- or even if you're just trying to figure out how much of the Showtime/Sho Extreme broadcasts you want to catch, here's a handy guide to the men on the TEN-FIGHT UNDERCARD. The one that begins at THREE THIRTY P.M. It walks a fine line between, "Wow, lots of boxing for my money!" and "Uh, is it worth it to be at the fights for the equivalent of a full workday, and what happens if there are a bunch of early knockouts, won't I just be sitting around for hours anyway?" But there are some worthwhile fights and fighters on the undercard, and I believe they'll run in the order I listed below, latest to earliest. I'll change it around if I find out differently later.

Devon Alexander vs. Lee Purdy (welterweight): This one's airing on Showtime proper, but it's hard to get enthused about it. It's an attempted salvage job for a better fight, Alexander-Kell Brook, that fell through. Not that any Alexander fight is all that great these days anyway. As much as Alexander is defending his last skittish, contact-free performance against Randall Bailey as fighting smart against a dangerous puncher, I'd be more inclined to give him a pass if his bouts in recent years haven't ranged from "not horrible" to "no more Alexander on TV, please." Purdy wasn't the worst option Alexander and Golden Boy Promotions were looking at to replace Brook, but he's near it. He'll fight hard but he's very hittable and doesn't have a truly notable win on his resume. Between Brook, Purdy and apparently, next, Amir Khan, GBP seems to think Alexander vs. Brits is the key to what ails him, somehow.

Shawn Porter vs. Phil Lo Greco (welterweight): That's more like it. Porter-Lo Greco will air on Sho Extreme and ought to entertain. Lo Greco loves getting knocked down and hurt and coming back to win. Porter was once an acclaimed prospect who's had a bumpy ride of it more often than not lately, and he can be in some awkward bouts, but he typically throws his share of punches. When I saw Lo Greco on the undercard of Adrien Broner-Antonio DeMarco, he didn't disappoint, but it's not clear if he has all that high a ceiling, so he'll either help Porter right the ship or prove he's pretty good, and give the fans something to cheer about along the way.

Anthony Ogogo vs. Edgar Perez (middleweight): GBP is giving 2012 Olympians and Brits a big push on this undercard. Ogogo is both. He's in just his second bout as a pro, so don't expect this to tell us more than nothing. Ogogo was solid, if unexceptional, in the Olympics, and rode a high work rate to a bronze medal. Ogogo-Perez will air on Sho Extreme.

Haroon Khan vs. Vicente Medellin (bantamweight): Khan is also British, the brother of Amir, and like his brother's habit, he was said to have tried to hard to impress in his pro debut. This is fight #2, so the same thing that goes for Ogogo goes here -- it won't tell us much. But the bout will air on Sho Extreme, "time permitting," according to Showtime's news release.

Thomas Williams vs. Otis Griffin (light heavyweight): Another D.C. guy on the card to go along with Peterson, Williams has looked every bit the goods so far, with speed, power and versatility -- but he hasn't fought anyone, either. The prospect faces his first opponent with any real name, but at this juncture there's not much else left there for Griffin, who won "The Next Great Champ" reality show long ago. He's lost six of his last seven. It's probably about the right fight for Williams' development, but it's hard to get excited about, even if I'm relatively high on Williams.

Anthony Peterson vs. Dominic Salcido (lightweight): Last I talked to Anthony, he was looking to headline a Friday Night Fight show, but apparently that fell through. The main thing is, he needed to get back in the damn ring -- he hasn't fought in about a year and a half, so that he's on any card anywhere is a good thing. I wonder about his focus, and not just because of the low-blow DQ vs. Brandon Rios. Salcido, described by the news release as a slick boxer who's happy to trade, had been out of the ring for nearly two years himself after losing a close decision to Eloy Perez in 2010, then returned in 2012 to be the odd non-knockout victim of Omar Figueroa. A rusty Peterson plus a maybe-tricky Salcido spells potential trouble, which in turn spells a fight I want to watch. Peterson, too, is usually focused on power punches, so if Salcido trades it could be a crowd-pleaser.

Rau'shee Warren vs. Angel Carvajal (bantamweight): I just don't buy three-time Olympian Warren as a pro prospect. He couldn't win in the Olympics despite being one of the United States' top gold hopes all those years, and he definitely can't punch. I don't remember anyone being all that impressed about his pro debut last fall, but I kind of root for him to make a little money in the game anyway, just because, hey, three times he went to the Olympics for the United States.

Jamel Herring vs. Victor Galindo (lightweight): Herring's a former Marine and former Olympian, so I root for him, too. Back in the Olympics, the knock on him was that he was too raw. He and Warren are on just their fourth pro bouts, so, again, expect very little information to be conveyed in these bouts.

Cesar Seda vs. Miguel Tamoyo (bantamweight): Back in 2011, Seda had one of those "good losses" against Omar Narvaez in a bout that some thought was closer than the scorecards indicated. Since, he's kind of dicked around against nondescript competition, and Tamoyo -- despite a gaudy knockout ratio -- continues that trend. Not sure what the story is here: Seda stepped up to 10 round bouts back in 2007, but since the Narvaez loss he's had a six-rounder and this will be his third straight eight-rounder.

Robert Easter, Jr. vs. Antoine Wright (lightweight): Not that I went 10-deep through the Google search pages, but Easter hasn't gotten very much pub at all as a prospect. Apparently he's got deep amateur experience, and he's been paired on cards with some of the Golden Boy Olympians. He's also only on his fourth fight.

UFC Announces New Insurance for Fighters

by Michael David SmithOne of the things that has always separated the UFC from sports leagues like the NFL, NBA and MLB is the lack of insurance for UFC fighters for injuries suffered outside the Octagon. But as the UFC grows, that appears to be changing.

Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce, has announced that its 350 or so fighters, who are all independent contractors, will now be eligible for what it calls "customized accident insurance coverage." The policy will cover not just accidental injuries suffered in training, but also injuries suffered in car accidents or other injuries that have nothing to do with the fighters' MMA careers.

"As this sport continues to grow, we have been working hard to secure additional insurance coverage so that our athletes can perform at the highest levels," UFC President Dana White said in the announcement. "We're proud to give our athletes access to this type of insurance."

Duane Ludwig likes to break down fight tape when on marijuana

As the head coach, UFC veteran Duane Ludwig has helped Team Alpha Male fighters make major strides towards title shots. What's his secret? Well, he likes to break down fighting tape in an altered state.

"It's freakin' legal. Let me address this issue," Ludwig said to MMA Mania. "When I watch film, I watch film normal how I am now. Then I watch film when I'm high on marijuana. I also watch the film again when I have Alpha Brain in my system. I watch film from three different states of consciousness just to get different looks at things. Just to see if maybe I missed a step or a nice little detail just to get different looks on things. I take this serious as hell."

Alpha Brain is a supplement that claims to help customers find "lucid dreams, mental drive, focus and mental acuity." Sure. The fine people at WebMD say marijuana affects people differently. Some of its effects include euphoria, calmness, anxiety, or paranoia. Other possible effects include distorted sense of time, magical or "random" thinking, short-term memory loss, and anxiety and depression.

Ludwig lives in California, which is governed by medical marijuana laws. Marijuana laws are loosening up around the country, so as Ludwig says, "It's freakin' legal." It's an interesting method. We'll see if it continues to work for his fighters.

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Abel Trujilo scuffled at the UFC 160 weigh-ins, and Mike Tyson loved it

During the UFC 160 weigh-ins, Khabib Nurmagomedov blew weight, wore a wig, started a fight and made Mike Tyson laugh. He had a full day.

Nurmagomedov weighed in at 158.5 for his lightweight bout with Abel Trujilo. He will forfeit 20 percent of his purse, so maybe that's why he was angry when he faced off with Trujilo. He got in his opponent's face, first bumping Trujilo's head and then pushing him back. He was quickly escorted off stage by the UFC's Burt Watson.

The best part of the scuffle? Mike Tyson was on stage and loved every minute of it. Look in the upper right-hand corner of the video to see his reaction.

Rampage Jackson Not Excited With Matt Hamill for UFC 130

by Michael David SmithRampage Jackson gets his hands raised over Lyoto Machida. After some shuffling around of the upcoming UFC 130 fight card, Rampage Jackson has gone from taking on Thiago Silva in the co-main event to fighting Matt Hamill in the main event. He's not particularly thrilled with the change.

"Thiago Silva is the type of guy I would love to fight because he has great stand up and he comes to fight most of the time, so I was looking forward to fighting a guy like that," Jackson said on The MMA Hour. "Matt Hamill wasn't on my radar at all. I wasn't excited at all. But then again, not a whole lot gets me excited."

Jackson's comments about not being excited for the fight stand in contrast to the comments of Hamill, who said he plans to break Jackson's will. But Jackson says that the difference between their public comments is simple: Hamill needs to convince himself that he can beat Jackson, while Jackson already knows that he can beat Hamill.

New gloves, more time: What rule change could help MMA?s eye poke problem?

Alan Belcher. Gian Villante. Anthony Johnson. Wagner Prado. Waachiim Spiritwolf. Constantinos Phillippou. These fighters have all been on the wrong end of an inadvertent eye poke and the inadequate set of rules that accompany eye pokes. What can be done in a sport where open-fingered gloves are used and strikes to any part of the face are allowed?

The UFC's vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner has one idea that he thinks will help situations like the one that arose during Villante's loss. Ovince St-Preux inadvertently poked Villante in the eye. Referee Kevin Mulhall didn't see the poke, but Villante stepped back and said he was poked in the eye. Mulhall asked Villante if he could see, Villante responded he couldn't, and in accordance with MMA rules, the fight was stopped.

What Ratner wants to do is take the referee out of the decision to stop the fight. Since it's a medical decision, let the fight doctor make it. It will also give fighters time to recover as they wait for the doctor to come into the cage.

"I think by bringing the doctor in, just the whole operation will take a couple of minutes, and I think that should alleviate most of the pain and give us enough time to make sure the guy can fight," Ratner said.

Ratner will introduce this change to the Association of Boxing Commissions, the national oversight group of state MMA and boxing associations.

Referee John McCarthy also favors this approach:

A change to allow some extra time would also keep fighters out of the weird position of possibly lying to officials. Villante honestly answered the question, "Can you see?" He didn't think Mulhall would stop the fight because of it. This situation could make fighters think twice about how they answer the question, which could put their health in danger.

The open-fingered gloves don't help. Fighters use sparring gloves that are smaller than boxing gloves in training, but the gloves' size would get in the way during ground fighting and submission attempts. UFC commentator Joe Rogan has spoken during many fights about the need for a better design for fight gloves, but none have surfaced among high-level fighting.

How can MMA fix this problem? Great ideas don't have to come from executives or state commissioners. If you have an idea to combat eye pokes, share it on Cagewriter's Facebook page. We'll feature the best ones in a post.
