As "The Ultimate Fighter's" current season begins to wind down, we see the final wild card, a crabby fighter and Thanksgiving.
Bubba McDaniel misses his family. This stuff is always tough to watch. He doesn't have the money to go see his kid because he's training. He's not the first man to talk about the sacrifices he and his family make to fight, but that doesn't make it easier to watch. When McDaniel gets to practice, Jon Jones talks about how McDaniel has been one of his best training partners, but hasn't shown it in the cage.
Thanksgiving, and a few fighters don't have much to be thankful for: For Thanksgiving, the fighters and coaches all gather to enjoy each other's company and the traditional Thanksgiving meal. McDaniel, however, has to make weight for the third time in four weeks: His preliminary fight, his first-round fight which he lost, and now his wildcard bout. Watching people eat is making him quite crabby.
A second chance for Casey: While McDaniel's motivation is his family, Casey is happy to have the wildcard for his second chance at proving he belongs in the UFC.
Kevin Casey (Team Sonnen) vs. Bubba McDaniel (Team Jones)
Casey controlled the first round of the fight on the ground, so much so that one of his teammates yelled, "You're breaking him, Kevin!" Those words didn't sit so well with McDaniel, who came back to control the second round on the ground. When the round ends, Casey needs to be helped back to his corner. Not surprisingly, the judges called for the fight to go to the third round.
With his coaches saying, "You're going to remember this for the rest of your life," Casey says that he can't go on. The fight is called, and UFC president Dana White says, "He's quitting? That's crazy." Note: That's not what you want to hear out of the man who you want to give you a job. But McDaniel hears good news from the boss, as he will get the $5,000 bonus for finishing a fight.
Casey's health is in trouble. Sonnen says Casey is not out of shape and is surprised by what happened in the fight. Casey explains that he once before had kidney failure in a fight, and is taken to the hospital in an ambulance to see if that's what has happened again.
In the meantime, White announces the quarterfinal fights:
Collin Hart vs. Kelvin Gastelum
Dylan Andrews vs. Luke Barnatt
Josh Samman vs. Jimmy Quinlan
Uriah Hall vs. Bubba McDaniel
