MMA oversight group makes scoring change recommendations

If you're one of the many, many MMA fans who have complained about the scoring of an MMA fight, you may have some recourse soon. The Association of Boxing Commissions, the national group all state commissions belong to, have made suggestions to changes in the scoring system.

While they don't advocate moving away from the 10-point must system, where the fighter who wins the round earns 10 points, they do offer clarification to what wins a round.

1. Effective defense is removed as a criteria.

This makes sense. There are few situations in sports where defense scores points without becoming the offense first. A safety in football is the only of the big four American sports. The inherent job of defense is to prevent the opponent from scoring points. Good defense should set up a good offense in MMA.

2. Striking and grappling are now given equal weight in scoring. From the ABC's suggestions:

The old scoring system rewarded striking (as a primary consideration) more than grappling. Mixed Martial Arts is based on two skill sets - striking and grappling. The committee felt that grappling should not be a secondary factor in determining the outcome of a match. Grappling has a definitive skill set and athleticism and offensive capabilities which when used correctly can effectively end a fight. As such grappling skills should be rewarded and given equal weight to striking.

Grapplers everywhere will dance with joy if this change is passed. Jeff Curran's loss to Takeya Mizugaki and Miguel Torres' loss to Demetrious Johnson might have turned out differently with this provision in place.

3. Replace "damage" with "effective." We can assume the committee meant effectiveness, because who wants to replace a noun with an adjective? In short, the committee wanted a term that didn't make them feel so icky.

1. The legal considerations surrounding the term "Damage" as a descriptor were given considerable weight and as such the committee felt that using the word "Damage" may contribute to the potential for liability in the event of any litigation that commissions may find themselves involved in.

2. The sport of MMA is still relatively new and has not received sanctioning in various jurisdictions. The committee felt that "Damage" as a descriptor may play a factor in helping to determine future sanctioning if the term was taken out of context with many opposed to MMA as a sport.

This would also prevent the ineffective argument from fighters at post-fight press conferences who point to cuts and bruises on their opponent as proof of winning.

The ABC votes on the committee's recommendations next week. Do you like the recommendations? Should they add any more? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Why MMA Fans Should Care

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley will fight Saturday night in Las Vegas. We'll have full results and live round-by-round scoring for Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley on Saturday night, which may lead to a few readers wondering, What's boxing news doing on an MMA site? Here are five reasons why you, if you're an MMA fan, should care about Pacquiao vs. Mosley:

1. It's the biggest combat sports event of the year.
For as much as the UFC has gained on -- and in some respects surpassed -- the popularity of boxing, the biggest fights in boxing still exceed the biggest fights in the UFC in terms of pay-per-view buys and worldwide media attention. Although the MGM Grand in Las Vegas obviously won't attract nearly as many fans as the 55,000 who came out to see Georges St. Pierre in Toronto, Pacquiao vs. Mosley will surely get more pay-per-view buys in the United States, far more mainstream media attention and far more attention globally, as Pacquiao is a draw throughout Asia and the single biggest celebrity in the Philippines, a country of nearly 100 million people. This is a major worldwide sporting event.

Raymundo Beltran Upsets Hank Lundy In A Hank Lundy Fight

There is no such thing as a bad Hank Lundy fight, and Raymundo Beltran was the perfect dance partner, stylistically. But Beltran was a bit too good substantially, too, and the long-time Manny Pacquiao sparring partner upset Lundy on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights by majority decision.

Lundy, a top 10 lightweight coming in, had a solid 1st, but then, so did Beltran -- for all the attention ESPN's commentators (including guest Zab Judah) were giving Lundy for his skills, Beltran was fighting smartly, cornering Lundy repeatedly and throwing combinations were at least one shot was landing, exactly what a slower, stronger fighter ought to be doing with a quicker one. Beltran edged the 2nd despite beginning to bleed over his eye, and then came the epic 3rd.

The build-up featured Beltran chasing Lundy all around the ring and connecting on meaningful punches, before Lundy took the occasion to do that unique thing he does where he suddenly becomes quite stupid, and then an exciting moment comes. As Lundy foolishly traded along the ropes toward the end of the round and was getting the worst of it, the two exchanged simultaneous left hooks that set both of their knees rattling. Both smiled at each other, touched gloves a second before the bell rang and returned to their corners. You don't see rounds end like that very often.

Lundy settled down some in the middle rounds and began to use his legs better -- perhaps he was suffering from repeated failed attempts to make weight on Thursday before finally getting under 135 -- presenting a harder target for Beltran in the center of the ring. But by the late rounds Beltran was again finding Lundy, as he outworked his nimble foe. On Facebook, FNF's page was registering this fight as a win for Beltran, even as most on Twitter had Lundy ahead or a draw, as I scored it. With Lundy's CES promoting the fight, every expectation was that the judges would go with the home team.

But judges like aggression, too, and Beltran always was the aggressor. One judge had it a draw; two had it 96-94 for Beltran. Lundy suffers a setback at a time when he was hoping to graduate from the FNF level, possibly to an Adrien Broner fight, but from a fan's standpoint, we're almost better off -- Lundy makes our Friday nights that much brighter, and performances like this and others suggest that if Lundy even can graduate, he'll need to improve his overall game quite a bit. The victory turns Beltran into a new player on the lightweight scene and gives him the win of his career, as he has usually lost to anyone of acclaim, like Luis Ramos, Jr. and Sharif Bogere.

On the televised undercard bout, super middleweight Farah Ennis mostly dominated an anemic Richard Pierson, who had moments of counterpunching success (notably in the 5th, when he nearly decked Ennis) but didn't do nearly enough, perhaps because Ennis was doing a lot of damage to his face and making him reluctant to fire. Ennis showed he could take a shot and boxed reasonably well, but also didn't dazzle.

Overall, if not Beltran, the star of the night might've been a dude in a wifebeater in the audience who was chewing up scenery.

UFC 148 starts with an eye poke and three decisions

If the first three fights of UFC 148 are a harbinger of things to come, we're in for a long night. All three were decisions that were less than exciting.

Constantinos Phillippou survived a vicious, though unintentional eye poke from Riki Fukuda to take a slow, stand-up filled decision. The judges saw it 30-27, 30-27, 29-28. Before that, Shane Roller grinded out a wrestling-filled decision over John Alessio. The 29-28 on all cards unanimous decision snapped a three-fight losing skid for Roller.

UFC 148 was started with a unanimous decision win for Rafaello Oliveira over Yoislandy Izquierdo.

MMA Top 10 Women's Pound-for-Pound

by Michael David SmithGina CaranoThese are uncertain times for women's mixed martial arts. Strikeforce has been the industry leader in female fights, while the UFC has maintained that it has no interest in putting women in the Octagon. So now that the UFC runs Strikeforce, does that mean women's MMA is endangered?

Not necessarily. The Strikeforce women were invited to the UFC's recent fighter summit in Las Vegas, which indicates that Zuffa thinks women have a future within the company, and next month's return of the sport's biggest female star, Gina Carano, will result in a publicity boost for women's MMA.

So as I review the top 10 female fighters in mixed martial arts, I'm confident that it's a list of fighters whose futures are bright. Even if I'm not sure where and when most of them will fight next.

Gus Johnson Signs With Fox but Stays With Showtime

by Michael David SmithLast week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well.

Theoretically, it's even possible that Johnson could be back on the CBS airwaves if CBS ever aired another Strikeforce fight: When Johnson called EliteXC and Strikeforce fights on CBS in the past, that was part of his Showtime deal. It's probably a long shot that we'd see Johnson back on CBS, however.

MMA Top 10 Middleweights: Intrigue Grows at 185 Pounds

by Michael David SmithAnderson Silva defended his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 126.We haven't updated our rankings of the Top 10 middleweights in mixed martial arts in quite some time because, frankly, Anderson Silva has made it a boring division.

That's not to say Silva is boring: When he's on his game, he's as exciting as any athlete this sport has ever seen. And it's not to say the other fighters in the division are boring: There have been plenty of good middleweight scraps over the last few months.

But ranking the middleweight division can get boring because not much changes: It's always Silva on top, and a familiar cast of characters competing for the right to be Silva's next victim.

But there are some indications that the middleweight division in mixed martial arts might be getting a little more interesting. Yushin Okami is finally scheduled to get the title shot that was promised to him months ago, Chael Sonnen is finally getting close to being cleared for a return, and the addition of Strikeforce middleweights (starting in July with Jason Mayhem Miller and likely including Strikeforce champ Jacare Souza soon) may inject some new blood into the middleweight class.

So now is a good time to update our list of the Top 10 middleweights in mixed martial arts, keeping an eye on what's ahead for Silva and the other top fighters.

Adrien Broner Stops Vicente Escobedo In Tainted Performance, Keith Thurman Pretty Good In HBO Debut

We almost didn't get Saturday night's card on HBO because Adrien Broner unprofessionally failed to make weight and put his junior lightweight bout against Vicente Escobedo in jeopardy. Judging from the outcome, we might not have missed much. Certainly, Broner is a visibly sparkling talent whose performances are worth watching, and welterweight Keith Thurman showed on the undercard why he'll be a prospect to watch.

But did we truly need to see a twice-overweight Broner combine his natural ability advantage with a size advantage to whoop a more honest, professional fighter who faced the risk of getting no payday had he turned the bout down? Did we need to see Thurman in a fight that ESPN2 would've gladly aired but that Showtime's ShoBox program for developing prospects might well have rejected? Did we only get this card because of HBO's continued affiliation with influential adviser Al Haymon, even with the network's new leadership? Answers: No, no, and almost certainly.

Dan Henderson not thinking about legacy ahead of UFC 151 title shot against Jon Jones

A little more than a month before his light heavyweight title shot against Jon Jones, Dan Henderson isn't worried about his legacy.

A win over Jones would give Henderson titles in the UFC, Strikeforce, PRIDE and RINGS. It also would be a significant upset -and likely would have people reconsidering their best-of-all-time lists. Could Henderson move past Anderson Silva and Fedor Emelianenko as the greatest fighter in history?

"That's not really for me to decide," Henderson told MMAjunkie.com earlier this month. "I'm just out there trying to be the best fighter that I can be, and if people think I'm the best ever, then even better."
