Timothy Bradley Stripped of WBC Title
On Thursday, the WBC stripped Timothy Bradley of his Light Welterweight Championship. This action was yet another corrupt and egregious farce on the part of what was boxing's leading sanctioning organization, and sure to further damage the WBC's rapidly evaporating reputation.
WBC President Jose Sulaiman indicated that Bradley was stripped due to his inactivity and his plans to move up to 147 lbs. Both claims are clearly false. Timothy Bradley had won back the WBC title (he had been stripped ...

Working in MMA: Mike Dolce talks about peak performance, Maury and manicures

This week, Cagewriter is taking a look at the different jobs that help the MMA world turn. See part I of the series here.

Today, we look at Mike Dolce, the peak performance coach who is known to help fighters improve their nutrition, and in turn, the way they fight. After working as a strength coach for 20 years and appearing on the seventh season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Dolce has worked with fighters such as Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Thiago Alves, Chris Leben and Vitor Belfort.

Cagewriter: What is your job like on a day-to-day basis?

Mike Dolce: I'm running multiple training camps from afar. Right now, in Vegas, I'm running Vitor Belfort's training camp and Mike Pyle's. I also have Thiago Alves coming up, and I'm his head coach. I cover so many hats with him, but Vitor and Pyle, I work specifically with their nutrition and weight management issues.

I say more peak performance coach because I do the meals, I do the weights, I do the overall training management. I'm the filter for the other coaches. I set up the training schedule from day to day. I even structure in their business meetings and social function as they get closer to fight time.

CW: Thiago, for example, you set his day?

MD: With Thiago, I literally set up his 24 hours, seven-day a week schedule. Which coach to go to, when he's not allowed to train, because that can be a problem with him, so I have to pull him back a lot. I have to schedule in massage therapy or alternate therapies to make sure he's not going to go to the gym.

On Sundays, I would schedule "Man-Day." He and I would go have a nice breakfast, and then go to a spa. We'd get a haircut, massages, get our feet and hands fixed it, even the random facial. It's important. I incorporate all those things to make sure my fighters are well-rounded.

I try to keep what I call "the positive bubble around fighters" and not let any negativity in. With Mike Pyle, I would get breakfast ready as he watched a fishing show on Versus, but now the Tour de France is on. It broke our rhythm, so instead of watching fishing, he switched to another channel with Maury and the Jerry Springer show. I'm in the kitchen, 20 feet away and I can feel the negative energy come out of the TV. I had to change the channel just to watch something more positive. You can't start your day with that kind of negative mind frame.

CW: What is a fight week like for you?

MD: I try to get to town a day prior to the athlete, then I set up the hotel room and do the food shopping. For Chris Leben, he got into town on Monday night, and before he even got here, I packed a huge cooler with the proper foods that Chris was going to need. I made sure he had everything he was going to need, coordinate with his team, talk about what his weight cut process is going to be. On weigh-in day, I will be with him through the weigh-ins, and then go back to his room for the rehydration process. That carries all the way through to the minute he steps in the cage, performs, and then even afterwards, when I give him the food and fluids that need to go in his body to help him repair and recover from that. My job typically doesn't end until Sunday morning.

CW: What is the best part of your job?

MD: The best part of my job is spreading health. My primary focus is not world titles, and it's not money, or any of those things. It's to make my athletes as healthy as possible. That's the most rewarding part: seeing kids like Thiago Alves, not so much go out there and have a dominant performance, but it's for him to feel so good and be so happy with himself because his body is in a positive state. Performance is just a by-product of that.

CW: But what's the worst part?

MD: I wouldn't point to a worst part and say that it's bad, but the hardest part is dealing with the ups and the downs of the sport. You can work with an athlete, and have a great training camp and he'll go out there on fight night, and something doesn't work. I'm so emotionally attached to my fighters that it's a hard roller coaster. For me, it's multiple times in a single night.

Actually, the worst part is the time away from my family, but it's a choice, but I'm not going to be a victim to it. It's something we've decided over the next few years to do this.

Follow Mike Dolce on Twitter here. Tomorrow's working in MMA profile will focus on Bernie Profato, head of the Ohio Athletic Commission.

Pat Miletich interview: Not everyone?s a fan of Tito getting UFC 133 main event

In describing his miraculous turnaround from the brink of retirement, Tito Ortiz is beginning to throw around the term "Cinderella story." Ortiz, who fighting for his career at UFC 132, is now fighting Rashad Evans at UFC 133, but not everyone is feeling all warm and fuzzy. Showtime MMA analyst and former UFC fighter Pat Miletich was asked about Tito's tale and came across as less than thrilled that Ortiz is being given such a great opportunity (4:00 mark).

"I'm not comment a whole lot on that except, 'throw me in on an undercard and if I win, suddenly I'm a main event guy?' I don't know how that works. Tito puts asses in seats and probably sells pay-per-views, so it's a business decision most likely." Miletich said.

The Showtime analyst was also asked about a possible dream fight against Fedor Emelianenko.

"Let's be honest, Tito in the ring with Fedor ... I don't think Tito deserves that. I gotta be honest with you," Miletich said. "The level of class in those two persons. I don't think Tito remotely deserves that."

Miletich appeared on ESPNRadio1100 to promote his hour of the "The Sixth Annual ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM 24-hour Radiothon" to benefit "The Caring Place" in Las Vegas.

Pat will be joined by Mauro Ranallo on Jul. 22 at the Palms. Anyone who'll be in the Las Vegas area that weekend can bid to sit in for an hour of radio with the Showtime duo. The proceeds go to "The Caring Place."

Check out the roster and bid if you'd like to contribute. Some of the other hours will hosted by Bernard Hopkins, Tony Dovolani, Brent Musberger, Larry Johnson, Jim Fassell and Mike Tyson.

Three For One: Quick Jabs, Round And Round, The Rest Of The Weekend's Boxing Schedule

I'm firing up a three-for-one column today because I'll be away from my computer for boxing-writing purposes all weekend. Although: Our Gautham Nagesh will write up the big junior welterweight clash this weekend between Amir Khan and Zab Judah on HBO, and our Andrew Harrison will write up the heavyweight Tyson Fury-Dereck Chisora fight he previewed here, so please do keep visiting. In the meantime, though, I wanted to give you something to chew on while I was gone.

Can you handle this? I don't think you can handle this. This three-for-one column is too bootylicious for you, babe. Maybe you should look at one third of it today, one third tomorrow and one third Sunday.

In this edition of The Rest Of The Week's Boxing Schedule, you get a sampling of Anthony Dirrell, Orlando Salido and even a replay of Delvin Rodriguez-Pawel Wolak.

In this edition of Quick Jabs, you get the scoring errors for Brian Viloria-Julio Cesar Miranda explained, more steroid allegations from the Mayweather clan and a bit of Antonio Tarver-Danny Green since we haven't mentioned that fight yet that happened earlier this week.

In this edition of Round and Round, you get what's next for Roman Gonzalez, Sergio Martinez, Brandon Rios and others.

As Flash Gordon's pal Vultan would say, "DIIIIIIIVE!"

(Actually, before you DIIIIIVE, a quick TQBR announcement: Mike Coppinger won't be on the staff for us anymore, sadly, because he's now staff for BoxingScene instead. Good move for him, though; BoxingScene is the best breaking news site in the biz, and has a lot of great columnists, too. Meanwhile, you might have been noticing Corey Erdman's stuff appearing in BoxingScene, too. That's also good news for him, but the good news for us is that he'll still be writing pieces here. In fact, some of the Round and Round material below is gleaned from stories that Coppinger and Erdman wrote for BoxingScene. I'm proud of those fellas. Give 'em a hand.)

Fertitta interview Part 3: UFC owner has strong feelings on TRT, wants solutions soon

Testosterone replacement therapy may have been sports' dirty little secret, but Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt changed that with their highly publicized run ins with state commissions in California, Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Those are some of the leading commissions in the country yet there's no standard policy and plenty of gray area to allow fighters to, at a minimum, enhance their performance between fights and during training camp.

The confusion over TRT really concerns UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

"What you can't have are guys abusing this to the point where their levels are at some super-human factor, giving them this performance enhancement," Fertitta told ESPNRadio1100's "The MMA Insiders" show in Las Vegas.

Fertitta says testing right before and after a fight isn't enough to prevent fighters from abusing TRT.

"There's got to be more random testing. It seems like, possibly, guys are getting outside the boundary while they're training and managing it down where once the week of the fight [has arrived], they take the test and they're fine. I think that there needs to be this random testing to make sure no one's abusing it," said Fertitta (1:25 mark).

For the UFC, there is no gray area concerning TRT.

"I think we came off with a pretty strong response to Nate Marquardt, and kind how we feel about TRT," Fertitta said. "Our stance is we're working with commissions to say 'look this whole thing has got to come to an end.' If you are going to have some kind of therapy, not only can you not be at the top end of the range, you can't be anywhere near performance enhancing."

Before he was due to fight in the main event at UFC on Versus 4, Marquardt failed his test in Pennsylvania. He was suspended by the Keystone State and then it came to light his TRT issues began in N.J. before UFC 128.

Marquardt didn't have a testosterone use exemption in either state and tested positive at least once. What was the penalty? He was fired by the UFC, with little hopes of a return, but he is once again free to fight in the U.S.. Once he passed a subsequent test in Pennsylvania he was cleared and will serve no suspension.

Paul Daley talks Woodley, wrestling, and ?Marq-fart?

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Paul Daley's loss to Nick Diaz in April a back-and-forth fight, with Daley looking close to the win during the bout, but Diaz coming back for the win. At the Strikeforce open workouts, he talked about how he got over that loss.

"The usual way that we do in England. Go out, have a drink, party."

Cagewriter mentioned that it's also how we get over losses in America.

"I've drank with Americans, and I think us Brits do it a little bit better. Nah, I'm joking. I just relaxed, tried to take my mind off the loss, and look at a way that I can come back stronger. The goal is to be a champion."

His path to be a champion in Strikeforce started when he was cut from the UFC after 113, when he threw a punch at Josh Koscheck after their fight had ended. It's not a moment that he's particularly proud of, but it's one that fans continue to congratulate him on.

"Everybody saying they hate Koscheck and saying well-done for hitting him? That's what I keep getting greeted with in the lobby. Obviously, I'm sorry for what I did, it's not something I'd repeat, and it's not something that I'm proud of, but I think the fan backlash is a little bit twisted. If I had a pound for every time somebody said well done for hitting Koscheck, I'd be a millionaire."

The Brit is hoping to create more memorable moments against another wrestler. In his first fight since losing to Nick Diaz in April, Daley will face Tyron Woodley at Strikeforce this weekend. Woodley was an All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri.

"Obviously, being the top fighter that I am, my least favorite fight is going to be against wrestlers, so I have to look at improving that area. It's something that I've continuously done. It's not something that I've stopped just because in recent fights I haven't faced wrestlers. I have to find all the best wrestlers I can and continue to improve in that area. I think I'm going to be there, and I think that Woodley is going to be surprised at the improvements I've made since my last fight with a wrestler.

With his unceremonious dismissal from the UFC after 113, you would expect that he would be in an awkward position after Zuffa, the UFC's parent company, bought Strikeforce. Instead, Daley was surprised by overtures from Lorenzo Fertitta.

"Lorenzo came to my dressing room before the Diaz fight, and he's a very cool guy. I've always said that. Very humble and approachable. He came to my fight and wished me good luck. He came out of his way to say hello, and he doesn't have to do that."

That quick cut from the UFC means that Daley has something in common with Nate Marquardt, the former UFC fighter who was released when he not allowed to fight on the UFC on Versus 4 card by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. But don't look for any camaraderie between the two.

"I voiced my opinions about what he did and what he got caught for, and he comes back calling me a coward and a bully. I'm sure that's what he used to call people in the playgrounds. I aired my views in a sophisticated and direct manner, and he came back with that bullshit. If I am able to fight Nate 'The Great' Marq-Fart, then I will."

Andrei Arlovski to Face Ray Lopez in ProElite Debut

Former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski will face Ray Lopez in his ProElite debut on August 27 in Hawaii, MMA Fighting has learned.

Two sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed the matchup, which will be officially announced in a Friday press conference.

The 15-9 Arlovski will be hoping to bounce back after a four-fight losing streak. He has not won since an October 2008 KO win over Roy Nelson. Since then, he's lost fights to Fedor Emelianenko, Brett Rogers, Antonio Silva and Sergei Kharitonov. Three of the four have come by way of KO or TKO, leading some critics to call for Arlovski to consider retirement.

Instead, he'll attempt to walk the comeback trail against Lopez, a Michigan-based fighter with a 5-2 record who is coming off a 75-second TKO win at a recent King of the Cage event. Lopez has won four of his last five overall. The 24-year-old also has experience in pro boxing, with a 3-4 record in seven fights.

He's fought primarily as a light-heavyweight in MMA but has weighed as much as 226.5 pounds during his boxing career. Arlovski, who entertained boxing aspirations before settling back into MMA, usually weighs around 240 pounds.

The August 27 ProElite show takes place at the Neil Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, and also features a middleweight bout pitting Kendall Grove against Joe Riggs, as well as the MMA debut of BJ Penn's younger brother, Reagan Penn.

For casual MMA fans, the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix just took a major hit with the ouster of Alistair Overeem. Now the biggest name in the tournament is gone and the card loses a lot of steam without Overeem, a fan favorite.

Couldn't this have been avoided? Did Overeem overplay his hand or did Zuffa make a mistake? Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole checked in to give his take on this video blog.

"The Reem" told Zuffa he wouldn't be ready for Strikeforce 36 in early September, but October was good. That would mean the other three participants would have to adjust their schedules for Overeem. Keep in mind, both Antonio Silva and Sergei Kharitonov haven't fought since February.

Jeff Wagenheim from SI.com brought out the big guns and slammed Strikeforce's heavyweight GP.

The departure of The Reem is only the latest in a neverending succession of oddities and tribulations for the year-long event and for Strikeforce itself, which sensible Zuffa observers have always believed will go away at some point -- just as Pride did, just as the WEC did. But clearly this consolidation is not happening according to the Neil Young business plan, because Strikeforce is fading away before it can burn out. Apparently rust does sleep.

The Heavyweight Grand Prix was flawed to begin with -- shouldn't a tournament be held to determine the next challenger for a title, rather than including the champ himself? -- and soon became immeasurably more flawed. Can you imagine any major sport holding one set of playoff quarterfinals, then waiting four months before completing the other side of the bracket? Well, that's exactly how the Grand Prix unfolded.

The bigger issue? The October schedule is already jammed. Oct. 1 is out with UFC on Versus 6 in New Orleans, UFC 136 on Oct. 8 and Oct. 29 has UFC 137.

Don't forget Showtime is already booked for Oct. 15 with Bernard Hopkins facing Chad Dawson. So the only open weekend is Oct. 22. Does Showtime have the staff to effectively set up and promote major fight cards on back-to-back weekends?

Tito admits lesson learned: Don?t text and drive

Tito Ortiz was doing something many of us do on a daily basis - texting while driving. The result was a smashed grill on his Rolls Royce Phantom and a momentary scare because his son Jacob was also in the car.

I learned a valuable -- or maybe I should say "expensive" -- lesson at the weekend: Don't text and drive! I was taking a day off from training and driving in my Rolls-Royce Phantom, my pride and joy, and I looked down at my phone for literally one second because I had a text -- and I crashed my Phantom," Ortiz wrote in an ESPN.com blog.

The dangerous activity is going to cost Tito $45,000:

I let my attention slip for one second ... I just couldn't believe what I'd done. The grill was totaled. The headlights were done. The hood was mangled up. It was a really, really expensive mistake. That's my dream car. It sucks. It sucks so bad. I really, literally cried. Seriously, I cried.

There will be some guys reading this going "really? Tito cried over a fender bender?" but I know other guys will understand a man's love for his vehicle. That's my pride and joy. I love that car. I worked so hard to get that car. That's a unique vehicle and I was so dumb to look at my phone.

This motivates Ortiz more than ever to duplicate his efforts at UFC 132 where pulled the upset on Ryan Bader, gained a contract extension and picked up the Submission of the Night bonus of $75,000.

Putting it another way: after tax, that's my entire "Submission of the Night" bonus from choking out Ryan Bader at UFC 132. Now I need another sub or KO or Fight of the night against Rashad Evans at UFC 133.

Curse continues: Sakara out of UFC 133 with torn ACL, Rivera awaits replacement

It turns out the third time is not a charm.

Results of an MRI conducted today confirmed that Alessio Sakara has torn his ACL and will be out a minimum of six to eight months, a representative from American Top Team confirmed today with MMAjunkie.com.

The news spoils Sakara's bout with Jorge Rivera, which was targeted for UFC 133 on Aug. 6 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Audio chat: Strikeforce announcers talk Fedor-Hendo at ESPN1100 24-hour radiothon

The timing was perfect for a lucky Las Vegas listener to do an hour of radio with Showtime announcer Mauro Ranallo, Pat Miletich and Stephen Quadros. Strikeforce Challengers 17 is scheduled tonight for the Pearl Theatre at the Palms in Sin City. Across the casino in the Key West Room is the ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM Sixth Annual 24-hour radiothon to benefit The Caring Place.

Back in 2005, Al Bernstein and his wife Connie helped establish The Caring Place, a cancer assistance center just west of the Las Vegas strip.

The Showtime trio took listener Angel Garcia on a hardcore trip through MMA history and broke down all the big upcoming fights on the Strikeforce schedule.

The broadcast goes through 1p ET on Saturday. Upcoming guests include Mike Tyson, Jim Fassel, J.T. the Brick and Larry Johnson. Listen here.

Bobby Lashley Pulls Out of Titan Fighting Bout

Filed under:

Bobby Lashley, the former WWE star who's now dabbling in MMA, has pulled out of a scheduled fight with Eddie Sanchez, which was supposed to be the main event of the Titan Fighting Championship 19 event on July 29.

Titan Fighting announced the move on Friday, attributing Lashley's decision to unspecified personal issues. But the promotion says Lashley will be back in the cage on August 26.

"Unfortunately, with the things going on in Bobby's life right now it was not the right time to have him fight," Titan CEO Joe Kelly said in a statement. "Bobby will be the main event on the next Titan FC card on August 26, which will take place in Kansas City."

Pulling out of the fight represents another setback for Lashley, who has said he's committed to his MMA career but hasn't appeared to develop as a fighter. The good news coming out of Titan FC's announcement is that the promotion has put together a very good women's fight to serve as the co-main event of the July 29 show. Olympic wrestling silver medalist Sara McMann, who is 2-0 in her MMA career, will face her toughest test to date against Tonya Evinger.

With Lashley out, Titan's main event will now be James Krause vs. Clay French.

What does ?Anderson Silva-money? get you? A nice new mansion

Lyoto Machida backed out of the planned fight with Rashad Evans because he reportedly wanted "Anderson Silva money," or a pay day more like that of his good friend, UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Machida thought he was in the position to ask for that kind of cash, but UFC president Dana White balked at this request:

"I opted not to pay him Anderson Silva money and told him when he accomplished all the things that Anderson Silva has accomplished, then maybe he'll make Anderson Silva-type money," an incredulous White told reporters.

Silva is on a 14-fight win streak and lives atop the Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings. For that, he made $200,000 in his UFC 126 knockout of Vitor Belfort, but that figure doesn't include any bonuses or cuts of pay-per-view buys, which may be a part of his contract. His sponsorship money also isn't included into that figure, and Kevin Iole estimated that he pulls seven figures for a fight.

In fact, he just used that money to buy a new million-dollar home in southern California. The Los Angeles Times reported that Silva bought a $1.76 million home in Palos Verdes Estates to be closer to his training homes. The house has an ocean view, four bedrooms, three and a half baths, a pool and sits on a half-acre lot.

Maybe this gives a clue behind Machida's motivation. Who doesn't want a home with an ocean view?

Bas Rutten calls out testosterone/hormone replacement therapy users

The recent attention given to testosterone replacement therapy has really fired up some folks around the MMA world. Ben Askren straight up called Nate Marquardt a cheater. Bas Rutten piled on this week as well.

On HDNet's Inside MMA, Rutten showed no mercy for dopers.

"If you're take it for performance enhancing, you're a loser," Rutten said. "You see a lot of guys doing it. For me, the bigger they are, it shows weakness."

As Rutten was going on his rant, it was clear active fighter Dennis Hallman was squirming and getting agitated.

"The moment you're taking it, you're weak in the mind. If it's up to you that you have to take that [expletive], that's what I call it, to compete with the other ones, then don't compete," said Rutten.

Hallman chimed in by explaining why he uses hormone replacement therapy pointing to his issues with coeliac disease.

Rutten sounded like he's willing to accept the excuse put forth by some, but if you cross the line of legality with your testosterone limits, the former UFC heavyweight champ says throw the book at the fighter.

"I say just don't cross the line. If you're Nate marquardt [and you get] across the line, [it] wrecks a main event. That's a serious thing."

There seems to be one major issue with Hallman's explanation for his therapy. Don't forget, he tested positive for drostanolone and nandrolone back in 2007 after a win over Jeremiah Metcalf.
