Take a closer look at UFC 130 through Tracy Lee's lens, with views of the Frank Mir and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's wins, Demetrious Johnson's controversial win, Travis Browne's knockout and more.
Nothing's bigger than the NFL and as much as the league's old farts hate to admit it, gambling has helped make it an American institution. Betting on the fights, used to be part of the reason boxing was so big, but with a limited schedule and fewer household names the betting handle on boxing has dropped significantly.
According to Rob Akers, an assistant sportsbook director in Las Vegas, that's where MMA's rise to prominence comes in,
"I think it's directly related to boxing's downfall over the last few years," Akers told the Las Vegas Sun. "Pacquiao is a one-man show. He's the only guy who can bring any handle and people want to bet on a combat sport. They are always going to find some way to bet on one and lately it's been the UFC."
Akers makes the numbers for the sportsbook at the Venetian and Lagasse's Stadium in Sin City.
Cantor Gaming, overseeing the books at the M, Hard Rock, Tropicana and the Cosmopolitan, is the new bully on the block in the Las Vegas and it's jumped all over MMA.
"The action has gone up like you wouldn't believe in UFC. On these Saturdays when we have these UFC cards, we do massive handles," said Mike Colbert, sports book director of Cantor Gaming. "You're talking to an absolute boxing guy here and I will be the first to admit that UFC is more popular betting-wise. I never thought I'd see the day where it's this popular."
Colbert said the handle on UFC events quadruples most big boxing matches. The MGM-Mirage is also in the business of booking MMA events, but does so carefully. The director of MGM's sportsbooks understands why MMA has blown by boxing.
"In boxing, most people can't even tell you who is on the undercard," Rood. "If you go to an MMA card, the buzz in the crowd and prior to that could be just as much about one of the first fights on the card. We try to put lines on as many fights as we can because of demand. The great thing about MMA is people are going for all the fights."

The lightweight division is the deepest in the world, but it's lacked sizzle until recently. A division loaded with super-talented, but nice, polite dudes doesn't always sell with the casual fan. UFC 125 served as a prime example when the promotion had a tougher time selling tickets to the Frank Edgar-Gray Maynard fight. The fans made a mistake because it turned out to be a candidate for 2011 Fight of the Year.
In a way, you couldn't blame fan, because Edgar and Maynard didn't generate a ton of heat before the fight. Now, because the division is so crowded at the top, it looks like the days of mutual respect and glove tapping won't be as prevalent.
Anthony Pettis isn't happy with Gray Maynard and didn't hold back during a recent conversation with the Las Vegas Sun.
Last month, Maynard suggested Pettis is a product of overhype.
"I mean, who has he fought? I've been in the trenches this whole time fighting the toughest guys. He throws one kick and then he's the greatest in the world? Let's look at who he's fought. Ben Henderson is the best name," Maynard said referencing Pettis' "Showtime Kick" near the end of his win over Henderson. That kick made Sportscenter's Top 10 Plays of the Year.
Maynard respects a lot of his co-horts at lightweight, but has questions about Pettis.
[...] But for me, guys like Miller, Melendez and all of these guys who have been on the [expletive] grind, fighting the best competition for the past few years… that's what I look at," Maynard told MMAFA.tv. "Who have you fought? I don't care about how good you looked when you fought a scrub. That doesn't matter. If a guy isn't good then you're not supposed to look good. And for me, [Pettis] has fought one good guy in Ben, and he isn't proven yet. He's tough as hell, but we'll see."
Pettis fired back saying Maynard needed to get himself more attention and was just spouting off.
"He needs to get his face in the media somehow," Pettis told the Las Vegas Sun. "Gray is the No. 1 contender, but no one talks about him. He doesn't get a lot of press. I think he's trying to figure out a way to get people to talk about him. If he has to use my name to do that, he has to do what he has to do."
Pettis also said he thought that Maynard lost the fight against Edgar at UFC 125. After a big first round, Maynard allowed Edgar to creep back into the fight and pull out a draw.

LAS VEGAS - Brian Stann dealt with an emotional spot beautifully in the opening fight of the UFC 130 pay-per-view. The Marine, fighting on Memorial Day weekend, took out an elite middleweight in Jorge Santiago, by showing off a versatile, powerful stand up attack. Stann floored Santiago with a right hook and landed five more shots on the ground before referee Herb Dean saved the Brazilian at 4:29 of the second round.
"It means so much to win today," Stann said, who received a Silver Star back in 2006 for his heroic efforts in Iraq. "There are people who aren't here anymore. They are the true heroes. I am here thanks to a lot of luck and I'm grateful to be fighting on the biggest stage on earth."
Stann's military is a main focus before every one of his fights. He's so humble that he actually apologized during the prefight press conference and again after the fight.
"The attention that's bestowed upon me is misdirected. It belongs to the active military personnel and those who lost their lives fighting for this country," said Stann.
Based on his success with Japan's Sengoku, Santiago rose into the middleweight top 10 of some MMA polls. But there was also a thought that he was a bit overrated. The sportsbook and betting public in Las Vegas agreed with that assessment. Stann was minus-140 favorite during the week and one-sided action pushed him to a -160 favorite. The way the fight played out, he probably should've been a 3-to-1 favorite.
Santiago had trouble getting into a rhythm on the feet and anytime he went near Stann in a clinch situation, he was overpowered.
On the feet, Stann (11-3, 5-1 UFC) was excellent with his leg kicks. He momentarily dropped Santiago on two occasion with those kicks, but the fight changing blows came with both fists. He landed a left hook with 1:45 left in the first and pounded away on top of Santiago for the rest of the round. In the second, Santiago still looked shaky on the feet and was slow. Stann caught him with a right hook on the side of his head and this time Santiago couldn't recover. Stann pounced and fired away from a standing position. The fifth punch he landed made Santiago go limp.
Josh Barnett is outspoken and brash. It rubs a lot of people the wrong way. That included Dana White. Say what you want about Barnett, but he's not stupid, so when Zuffa purchased Strikeforce, the former UFC heavyweight champ swallowed his pride and finally worked to bury the hatchet with MMA's leading man.
That and just about everything else about Barnett seems to bother fellow heavyweight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.
"[...] when [Barnett] sees Fedor, [UFC President] Dana White or [UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo] Fertitta, he runs to them and stays by their side all the time. He makes me sick. He's the classic kiss-ass, a rude man …" [Silva told Sherdog]. "I really want to face Barnett and I've already said I consider him a filthy person, even though he is a great fighter, and that I'll beat him up and close both of his eyes."
Silva suggested Barnett is rude and snooty when it comes to Brazilian fighters.
"I've been fighting since 2004 and have never had any issues with another athlete, even the most stuck-up," explained Silva. "Friendship, for me, is everything, but Josh is a weird guy, a guy who doesn't greet you when you enter the elevator, doesn't even say 'good morning.' It's how he treats Brazilian fighters especially. It's the same thing with [Barnett and] Werdum."
Barnett faces Brett Rogers on June 18 in Dallas. With a win over Fedor Emelianenko, Silva advances to the semifinals of the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix. Silva is awaiting the winner of Alistair Overeem and Werdum on that same card.

A hero just eight weeks ago around UFC 126, Jon Jones is experiencing both sides of being a mega-star.
For the casual fan, he's been nominated for Spike TV's Guys Choice awards on June 10 (click on photo to vote). Jones is pitted against pound-for-pound boxing king Manny Pacquiao. Meanwhile, some hardcore MMA fans are worked up because Jones is sidelined with an injury. They're wondering why their hero is off until the fall.
"People look at 'Bones' Jones as being like their favorite Power Ranger," Jones told ESPN1100 in Las Vegas. "And their Power Ranger needs to be on because it's Wednesday night. I think people forget that my name is Jonathan Dwight and I'm very human, and I need to make decisions and choices. Sometimes people aren't going to going to get their Power Rangers show when they want it and how they want it."
Jones was expected to have surgery for a recurring hand injury, but that was canceled last week. Between cries that he ducked Rashad Evans and shots at his management, Jones has had to deal with some negativity.
After a final visit for another opinion, major hand surgery was avoided. That doctor told Jones the procedure was unnecessary and too risky for an athlete of his stature.
Using Twitter, his manager Malki Kawa tried to inform fans and the media about the change in plans. As a result, he's been eviscerated. This from Bloody Elbow's Brent Brookhouse:
Kawa is failing at his job. He is making a fighter who had built up a reputation as an unstoppable wrecking ball appear like he's going out of his way to avoid a fight with a guy who may be "in his head."
Headkicklegend's Matt Roth made it even more personal:
Unfortunately, Kawa is like many MMA managers. Ones who don't understand the sport or the press; only seeing the potential dollar signs they could make if they are successful. As a manager, Kawa isn't just under-qualified, he lacks any qualifications one usually associates to one in a managerial role. Lacking a college degree in any sort of relative field, he doesn't have a keen eye for business or contracts, nor does he have an understanding of proper PR work.
UPDATE: Kawa now says Jones is willing to fight Evans in October.
The issue is complicated. We don't know what sort of pain Jones experiences each time the injury re-appears. He clearly got some shaky medical advice along the way and fans should be happy he's not putting his career at risk.
In the end, it's not the worst thing for Jones to have some time off and build momentum towards future title defenses in late 2011 and early 2012. Appearances on "The Tonight Show" and the "Guys Choice" awards only add to his star power away from the Octagon.
The entire interview with Jones can be heard this Friday on ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas at 6 p.m. PT. "The MMA Insiders" radio show will feature Roy Nelson in studio along with Jones and Travis Browne. Listen here.

There's still no word on what's next for Georges St-Pierre. After he limped across the finish against Jake Shields, many folks have changed their minds about the UFC welterweight champ being invincible at 170 pounds.
Does that mean fans are more open to GSP-Jon Fitch II? Fitch sold the fight on this week's Inside MMA on HDNet (9 p.m. ET).
"You look at all the fights GSP's had, which fight has been the most exciting? Whether or not, you think I could beat him, which fight has been the most exciting fight?" Fitch asked Kenny Rice and company (0:179 mark). "And that's the fight I had with him. You're guaranteed to have an exciting fight with him. He can't hold me down, I can take his punch and I'm always gonna keep moving forward."
Fitch lost that one-sided fight at UFC 87 by a unanimous decision (50-43, 50-44, 50-44). Has he gotten better since then? Fitch's won five straight along with a draw versus B.J. Penn, but he hasn't exactly steamrolled people. Meanwhile, St-Pierre's become a very cerebral fighter and appears to gameplan for decision victories.
If GSP-Fitch II goes five rounds again it may spark another Wiki graffiti incident.
Is Fitch-GSP II the best option? If not, what is?
It looks like a good episode of Inside MMA with Rashad Evans, Mark Munoz, Daniel Cormier and Fitch. Evans appears to be the co-host. Hopefully, he can live up to standard set by Tito Ortiz a few weeks back. Tito struggled a little bit.

Nick Diaz is passing on all that boxing money to focus on his MMA career.
What does that mean? Diaz wasn't getting any more money to fight Jeff Lacy (reportedly 175-200k) than he currently makes in MMA. Now he could be on his way to the Octagon for a fight against UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre.
Diaz's boxing promoter Don Chargin confirmed the cancellation of the Lacy fight in a release:
Team Diaz had contemplated transitioning over to the boxing world in a legitimate attempt to pursue a high-level boxing career. These discussions began in 2009 with long-time boxing promoter, Don Chargin and proceeded up until recent times.
Never before in the history of both sports had a pound-for-pound MMA combatant in his prime had the desire or been contractually free to attempt to transition over to boxing.
The landscape of Mixed-Martial Arts moves at a rapid pace and while Diaz's chance to make history, becoming the first true cross-over MMA star to enter the boxing ring, an opportunity arose for Nick to make a different sort of history in his primary field of fighting.Don Chargin states, "Nick is a good kid and a very exciting fighter. Right now he has an opportunity of a lifetime as it pertains to his MMA career. While I don't doubt that Nick and his team were serious about taking the big step into boxing, it only makes sense for him to finish what he started and see how far he can go in MMA before he does anything in boxing. It's all about timing... we began these discussions over two years ago and nobody would have imagined the type of demand that there currently is for Nick as a mixed martial artist."
UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie that a Diaz move to the UFC is far from set in stone.
"We will see," White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "There are still a lot of hurdles."
Diaz's manager Cesar Gracie denied that the boxing match was booked to gain leverage.
"There are some people that have said we were just posturing to go into professional boxing and they don't understand that this thing is something we had been working on since 2009. It wasn't just out of nowhere but at this point in time, there's a certain chance that comes along once in a very long while and it only makes sense to stick to MMA as of right now," Gracie said. "Nick's been working really hard to get to this point in his MMA career and it wouldn't make sense for us to make that transition into boxing right now. If this were a couple months ago or if certain fights had played out differently, we'd definitely be ready to go into boxing, but that's not how it played out. Don Chargin is a great boxing promoter and he understood our dilemma completely and I thank him for that."
The Strikeforce 170-pound champion, Diaz hasn't lost since 2007. He's won 10 straight with nine coming by stoppage.

Up-and-coming heavyweight Shane del Rosario was on track to fight Daniel Cormier on the same Strikeforce card as the Alistair Overeem/Fabricio Werdum bout in June. That was until his car was hit by a drunk driver early Thursday evening. Now, his bout with Cormier is off, and his fighting future is up in the air.
"He's having some serious physical difficulties," Oyama (del Rosario's trainier) told MMAjunkie.com. "He's planning on [fighting again], but the injuries are serious enough to where it's kind of in question whether he can or not. We're hoping that he can. We'll know more in six months."
To a fighter, six months is an eternity, and a long time to go without a fight and the paycheck that comes with it. Del Rosario's last bout, a submission of Lavar Johnson, was in February. Now, he has no idea when his next bout will be. He is pursuing a lawsuit, but no court can give him back the time he's put into this training camp, or the spoils that would come with a win over Cormier.
Del Rosario isn't the only one affected by the crash. Cormier's last bout was in January, and he was looking forward to the step up in competition that del Rosario represented. Now, Strikeforce has to scramble to find a heavyweight that will take on Cormier and his Olympic-level wrestling on short notice, or he will have to wait to fight.
The frustrating part is that this wasn't an injury sustained in training. Those are part of fighting, and fights get moved around all the time because of training-related injuries. Del Rosario was simply sitting at a stoplight and was hit by a drunk idiot who made the destructive decision of driving a car. She was lucky that she didn't kill del Rosario. In making that stupid, self-centered choice to drive while drunk, she affected the careers of two exciting heavyweight prospects.

Ryan Couture is carrying the torch for his family now. The 28-year-old son of legendary Randy Couture is the only family member actively fighting. His father lost some teeth and his final fight at UFC 129. Couture, the former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champ, called it quits and has moved on to a career in movies.
RawVegas.tv tracked down Ryan to check on how he's doing in preparation for his third pro fight against Matt Ricehouse (4-0) at Strikeforce Challengers 16 in Kent, Wa.
Couture doesn't have a dominant skill like his father did, but because he started training in all aspects of MMA, he may actually be the more well-rounded fighter. There's a good chance he never reaches the heights his father did, but he's already off to an impressive start considering he only began working towards an MMA career in 2007.
MMA made strides again yesterday in New York as another bill passed through the state's senate. The N.Y. Senate voted 42-18 in favor of Bill S1707A and now it's head to the N.Y. State Assembly where it's consistently stalled in recent years.
Assemblyman Bob Reilly, D-Colonie, has led the charge in the past. The assembly session ends on June 20 with just 12 days of actual working time remaining.
It should be noted that the senate vote in favor of MMA in New York was stronger this time. In June of 2010, it only passed 32-26.
Sen. Joe Griffo, R-Rome, introduced S1707A yesterday.
"We made an attempt in the budget and it was taken out as the final agreement was put together," Griffo told the Albany Times-Union. "It's a good idea because the sport exists. It's a recognized sport, and it would generate economic activity and income for the state of New York, and allow New York State athletes to compete in their home state."
UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta was pleased with the outcome.
"It's time to bring the fastest growing sport in the world to New York. With every passing month, our sport gets more and more popular around the country and in New York," Fertitta said in a release. "We want to thank the State Senate, and we're confident that when Assembly members take an objective look at our safety record, our popularity with their constituents, and the economic benefits and jobs we would bring to the State, they will take the same action and UFC fans will finally be able to see live UFC events in their home state."
The UFC has bolstered its efforts recently in New York by holding two press conferences at Madison Square Garden and sending fighters to Albany on several occasions in 2011. UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones pitched in yesterday. New York is just one of six remaining states that don't allow MMA.

MTV2 and Bellator return this evening with another solid card. Hector Lombard and Patricky "Pitbull" Freire highlight the show.
The ranked No. 11 middleweight in the world in the USA Today/Blood Elbow rankings, Lombard (28-2) faces veteran Falaniko Vitale (29-9). Pitbull shoots for the Season 4 lightweight title against Michael Chandler in Atlantic City, N.J. at Bellator 44.
Freire (9-1) pulled off a highlight-reel KO in the last round by smashing Toby Imada with a flying knee. Pitbull fights out of the same Soutern California camp as the Nogueira brothers, Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva.
Chandler, a former Div. 1 wrestler at Missouri, is a tough matchup for Pitbull. Chandler (7-0) may be able to control the pace of the fight and nullify Pitbull's striking. He's also developing as a striker under the tutelage of Xtreme Couture's Gil Martinez.
"I'm still a young fighter and there is no reason to rush it when there are different avenues. I know I will be the best in the world at some point. I just want to push the pace but keep composed," Chandler told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "At the end of the day I don't want to squeak by."
Rising middleweight Alexander Shlemenko faces off against Brett Cooper and we may get to see TUF 12's Jeff Lentz against Anthony Leone. The Anthony Morrison-Bryan Goldsby fight was scrapped when Morrison missed with 135-pound bantamweight limit by weighing in at 146.5!
Bellator 44 betting lines:
Hector Lombard (-600) vs. Falaniko Vitale (+400)
Patricky Freire (+105) vs. Michael Chandler (-125)
Alexander Shlemenko (-165) vs. Brett Cooper (+145)
Jeff Lentz (+190) vs. Anthony Leone (-230)
"I don't talk much about game plans," Martinez said. "But we plan on putting (Freire) in some uncomfortable situations."
