Diaz submits 'Cyborg' after vicious standup battle
Striking, grappling and submissions, Nick Diaz can do it all. The Strikeforce welterweight champ is also as tough as they come.
In absolute war, Diaz ate the best that brawler Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos had to offer on the feet. Then he went into his bag of tricks, turning to his jiu-jitsu.
Late in the second round, a tired Cyborg took the fight to the ground and was submitted via armbar moments later by the versatile Diaz. The 27-year-old veteran retained his belt with the finish at 4:51 of the second in the main event of Strikeforce: 'Diaz vs. Cyborg' in San Jose, Ca.
Diaz (24-7, 5-0 Strikeforce, 6-4 UFC) wasn't surprised that the Brazilian striking dynamo chose to take it to the mat.
"I figured I'd put pressure [on him], he's gonna have to do something," Diaz told Showtime's Mauro Ranallo. "You know, if he didn't want to take anymore, he was going to have to take me down."
Cyborg (18-14) got off to a great start. He fired away with leg kicks and sent Diaz a message, that he had a war on his hands. Cyborg landed 16 nasty kicks out of 26 attempts in the opening round and Diaz just stood in front of him.
Cyborg won the first three and half minutes. He landed some huge rights that Diaz took and kept walking forward. The Californian was able to wrestle control of the round when he landed a huge left that pushed Cyborg back on the cage with 1:36 left.
Diaz, who also competes as a triathlete, has legendary cardio. Cyborg wore himself out with all those early strikes. The final 90 seconds saw Diaz land just about everything he threw. He drilled Cyborg with 36-of-64 punches in the first.
The all-out brawl had the crowd buzzing at the HP Pavilion. Diaz said he owed it to Cyborg to stand and bang with him.
"No, it's just really out of respect for the way he fights," Diaz said. "He came out here to fight me. He doesn't to try to play a game to win. He tries to come out here and get the knockout win, put on a show for you guys."
Cyborg came hard in the first two minutes of the second, but Diaz's relentless volume of punches broke down the Brazilian. With less than a minute left in the round, Cyborg tried to change the pace of the fight and scored a takedown via trip. Once it hit the mat, he found himself in a dangerous place, Diaz's guard.
In his early 20's, Diaz built his MMA reputation as a submission artist. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt showed he's still sick on the ground. Cyborg left himself open and was tapping less than 20 seconds later.
Both fighters threw with reckless abandon and absorbed a lot of strikes. Diaz made good on 75-of-142 (53 percent). Cyborg actually landed more shots, 85-of-173, with 34 of those shots being kicks. The Brazilian has a chance to be a real player in the welterweight division. This was just his second fight down at 170. He was a little small at middleweight. He'll be handful for welterweights in the future.

Herschel's involvement in MMA prompts one columnist to call the sport a circus
Herschel Walker's MMA career continues to confuse those outside the sport. The former NFL and college star is attracting the eyes of many media members who haven't bought into MMA as a legitimate sport, but at what cost? John Canzano can't be the only newspaper columnist thinking the sport is a joke because it's promoting a 48-year-old football star in the cage.
I want to like this sport. I want to understand it. I want to cover it, and write about it, and take it seriously. But how can I while the sport itself aims to be a circus?
Canzano wrote that in the Oregonian on Saturday in advance of Walker's fight this coming weekend against someone named Scott Carson.
[...] This matchup is a joke. It feels like Tonya Harding boxing. And dwarf Eddie Gaedel having an at-bat for the St. Louis Browns in 1951. And it's Chad Ocho Cinco racing against a horse.
Canzano then made sure to point out that Walker is fighting for Strikeforce not the UFC.
It's worth noting that Strikeforce is promoting this bout. That operation is a more sensationalized, more desperate younger cousin of the UFC. Hard-core mixed martial arts fans are quick to point this out and dismiss this as no big deal. Trouble is, the peripheral sports fan who is just getting to know the sport can't, and won't, make this distinction. I can't, either.
He's right, but frankly, in spite of James Toney's lengthy boxing resume, Walker may have stood a better shot in the cage at UFC 118 against Randy Couture. The UFC played the circus game a bit last year too.
Is Canzano, who's also a talk show host on Portland's biggest sports talk station, overreacting or does he speak for many casual and non-MMA fans?
Feel free to reach out to Canzano to debate the topic on Twitter @johncanzanobft, but remember to be civil. There's no reason to represent the MMA fanbase poorly.

Jones escapes car accident unscathed, will star in 'Unbreakable 2'*
UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones escaped disaster on Wednesday, walking away from a car accident just weeks before his bout with Ryan Bader at UFC 126. He tweeted a picture of his car afterwards, and said that the other driver had to be taken away in a stretcher.
This was a stroke of luck for Jones, because the bout with Bader is key to both men's careers. They have both risen through the ranks of the UFC, seemingly on a collision course. But was it luck? Or is he ... unbreakable?
In a rough and tumble sport like MMA, Jones has suffered very few injuries or cuts. Though he's broken an opponent's face, Jones has never even had a medical suspension for his UFC bouts. That could be because he is young and in excellent condition, or it's because he's the inspiration for the 2000 M.Night Shymalan movie "Unbreakable."
*He's not actually starring in "Unbreakable 2," because I'm pretty sure "Unbreakable" was too terrible of a movie to duplicate.

Fight for the Troops 2: McKenzie reps TUF 12 well in loss to Edwards
Cody McKenzie lost to Yves Edwards, but he proved he's a pretty solid mixed martial artist. The goofiest character to emerge from Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter" built his reputation on finishing opponents with a guillotine choke and talking to smack to Josh Koscheck. At Fight for the Troops 2, Edwards finished McKenzie with a rear-naked choke, but the bearded Alaskan showed he's got more to his arsenal.
McKenzie (12-1, 1-1 UFC) is learning on the job. His striking is very unorthodox, so he got picked apart in the first by Edwards. That may have led the veteran to sleep on him a bit to start the second.
McKenzie dragged Edwards (40-16, 8-4 UFC) to the ground with 3:33 left in the second, eventually got his back and pounded away for a few minutes. McKenzie's attack was relentless. Edwards survived that near two-minute onslaught and scrambled back to his feet. McKenzie got a little overanxious when he tried to get it down again. Edwards won the scramble this time and McKenzie found himself mounted. He eventually gave up his back where Edwards slapped on a nasty choke. McKenzie refused to tap and went out at 4:33 of the second.
Johnson finishes Guymon with nasty body lock
DaMarques Johnson has had trouble showing consistency since his stint on TUF 9. Tonight might be a leaping point for Johnson. He schooled Mike Guymon on the ground eventually taking the veteran's back and locking his legs in a body lock. Guymon tried to get to his knees, but was flattened out. Johnson (12-8, 3-2 UFC) wisely squeezed the hold and pulled up on Guymon's neck. "The Joker" couldn't take the pain for more than a few seconds and verbally tapped.
When he tried to rise to his feet, Guymon (12-5, 1-3 UFC) yelped and rolled back to the floor. UFC analyst Joe Rogan said he thought he saw something protruding from Guymon's back.

Former featherweight champ Brown loses again at Fight for the Troops 2
Mike Brown was on top of the world for much of 2008 and 2009, but things change quickly in mixed martial arts. The rest of the field has caught and begun to pass the former WEC featherweight champ. Rani Yahya dominated Brown in a grappling war to take a unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, in an undercard bout at Fight for the Troops 2 at Fort Hood in Killeen, Tx.
This was actually Brown's second fight in last three weeks in the UFC. He lost on New Year's Day at UFC 125 via decision against Diego Nunes. Maybe it was too soon to bounce back. He didn't look fresh for most of the fight.
Brown (24-8, 0-3 UFC) was a dominant force when he first dropped down to 145, but his fortunes have changed quickly, losing two straight, 3-of-4 and 4-of-6.
Yahya (16-6, 1-0 UFC) set the tone early with his grappling. The Brazilian is slight compared Brown, but he looked like the much stronger fighter in the clinch, and when the fight hit the floor.
Yahya was close to setting up a rear-naked choke at the end of the first. Brown was already breathing heavily. In the second, Brown opted to lock horns again with Yahya. He got it to the ground but could never settle into a dominant position. After a stalemate on the floor for three minutes, the fight got back to the feet. Brown looked sluggish and was missing badly with right hands from a distance. Brown did enough to take the round on two cards, but was out of gas.
In With about 50 seconds gone by in the final round, Yahya scored a takedown. A minute later, Yahya had his back. He did significant damage with punches and worked for a choke. He was pounding away, but referee Mario Yamasaki thought he saw some illegal shots and put the fight back on the feet. Brown couldn't mount an attack in the final minute.
Lowe's wrestling early on too much for Freire
Waylon Lowe isn't interested much in style points. He's a grinder, who relies on his wrestling to take the sting away from more well-rounded fighters. Willamy Freire may be a hot shot prospect, but he proved he still needs to work on his takedown defense. Lowe scored takedowns throughout the first two rounds. The American moved out to a 20-18 lead and survived gassing a bit in the final round to post his second UFC victory. Lowe won via unanimous decision, 29-28 on all scorecards.
The thickly muscled Lowe (10-3, 2-1 UFC) had a big advantage in the power department. Freire, 23, was too stationary when standing, allowing Lowe to charge forward for easy takedowns. On the ground, Freire was active from the bottom, but the judges gave the nod to Lowe who controlled things from the top.
Lowe was exhausted in the third and there for the taking, but Freire couldn't turn on the jets. After a scramble, he momentarily scored the mount. Freire eventually settled into Lowe's half guard with three minutes left in the fight. He did some damage with 12-15 lefts to Lowe's face, but the American scrambled and eventually got to his feet.
Non-televised undercard:
Chris Cariaso def. Will Campuzano via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Charlie Brenneman def. Amilcar Alves via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Greg Jackson Evangelizes for MMA on Local TV
For starters, it's a reminder of how far MMA is from being mainstream: When a local channel (in this case, KRQE in Albuquerque) does a show on MMA, they feel the need to spend a full minute telling the viewers to brace themselves because it's "not for the faint of heart." It's just assumed that most of the viewers will have no idea what MMA is, and will be turned off when they see the footage.
But once we get that bit of unpleasantness out of the way, the interview is also interesting because Jackson does such an impressive job of portraying MMA as a cerebral exercise, not a violent competition.

Dana White lashes out when asked if Brock Lesnar is qualified to coach on TUF
For casual fans and television executives, the news that crossover star Brock Lesnar is going to coach on Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter" is great news. For some reason, several media types and many hardcore fans are questioning the choice.
Lesnar, with only seven fights under his belt, clearly has some holes in his game.
Ariel Helwani from Fanhouse asked if the integrity of show would be affected with such a green fighter as the coach (2:35 mark).
"I think that's one of the craziest things I've ever heard you say. the guy's a former world champion. He's beat guys and held the title. No matter what his record is, what the guy's accomplished in a short amount of time in MMA is incredible," said White.
Lesnar, a former NCAA wrestling heavyweight champ, works with Marty Morgan. Morgan is also a former NCAA champ, who went on to wrestle at an elite level on the Greco-Roman international scene.
"He's obviously got a lot that he can teach. Not only that, but the staff he's got around him have a lot to teach up and coming guys. That's really what it's all about," said White.
White then turned it up a notch.
"To say the guy doesn't have the credentials to coach the 'Ultimate Fighter' is probably one of the dumbest things I've ever heard," said White (3:20 mark).
Is the show and the choice of coaches really about the quality of the coach?
Clearly TUF is a mix of entertainment and some fighting. If it were just about the fighting then current MMA stars like Jon Fitch, Frank Edgar and Tyron Woodley wouldn't have been rejected in the past. You'd also see tons of training footage with all those brilliant assistant coaches who've been on the show over the years.
On the subject of Lesnar as a coach. We really have no idea what sort of coach he'll be. He may be great at imparting his knowledge of grappling and wrestling. He may also stink just like 38-fight veteran Ken Shamrock did during his stint on TUF 3. It's also likely that Erik Paulson will be the guy working on striking with Team Lesnar. There's a lot of fighters around MMA who respect Paulson. Are they wrong?
Lesnar comes from similar background as wrestlers like Randy Couture (TUF 1) and Matt Hughes (TUF 2). Would you call either one of those guys boxing savants back when their seasons taped in 2004 and 2005 respectively?
Pipe down. Enjoy the show for what it is. It's part prospect training camp, part personality development for the coaches and part selling the sport. TUF 13 will deliver the biggest ratings in the history of the show. How can that be a bad thing?
Nick Diaz: ?I wouldn?t mind moving up. I?d just like to get paid for it, you know??
