Frank Mir: ?This is not going to be a fight that will be forgotten.?

UFC heavyweights Frank Mir (16-7) and Josh Barnett (32-6) have both been around for more than a decade with each competing at a high level from early on in their decorated careers. Now, after years of beating the bulk of the best the division has to offer, the two veterans will finally face off against […]

Dana White confident FS1 will be widely available by its planned Aug. 17 launch

UFC content will be a significant part of the programming that will be on the new cable channel, Fox Sports 1, which will debut on Aug. 17. The UFC even scheduled a fight card, headlined by Chael Sonnen versus Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, in Boston to appear on FS1's debut.

But as of now, FS1 isn't going to be available to large parts of the nation. According to John Ourand at Sports Business Daily, Fox has not reached a deal with DirecTV, Dish Network or Time Warner Cable to carry FS1.

Ourand notes that Fuel -- which currently carries a significant amount of UFC content that is going to move to FS1 -- will be rebranded Fox Sports 2 and is expected to go live with its new name on Aug. 17, as well.

That could mean that there are systems, Ourand wrote, that have FS2 but not FS1. That would not be good for UFC fans.

Earlier this month, cable systems in the Northeast sent notifications to their subscribers announcing plans to flip Fuel into FS2 by Aug. 17, which is the date when Fox Sports 1 is scheduled to launch.

Several distribution executives have said that Fox has told them to prepare for the change, which would be part of a soft transition around Aug. 17.

This raises the possibility that some distributors may carry FS2 but not FS1 at the beginning. Fox has yet to sign affiliate deals for FS1 with several top distributors, including DirecTV, Dish Network and Time Warner Cable. FS2 is not running into the same distribution problems because Fox does not need to get new affiliate deals to rebrand Fuel because of economics. Fuel costs distributors about 15 cents per subscriber per month, according to data from SNL Kagan. That rate is not expected to change when the channel rebrands to FS2.

UFC president Dana White said via text message that he remains unconcerned and thinks deals will be struck with all major providers by launch date.

"We got Comcast done," White said in a text to Yahoo! Sports, meaning Comcast Cable is set to go with FS1 on the Aug. 17 launch. "That was the one I was worried about, but I think Fuel situation helped there."

In a separate text, he wrote, "I am planning on all of them [DirecTV, Dish and Time Warner] by the 17th."

It's in the UFC's best interests, certainly, for Fox to get as wide of distribution as it can as quickly as it can for FS1 because it has so much content on the network. In addition to the loaded Aug. 17 card, which in addition to Sonnen-Rua also includes Alistair Overeem against Travis Browne, the UFC also has an Aug. 28 show from Indianapolis planned.

Even more significant, though, is the Sept. 4 debut of the reality series, "The Ultimate Fighter." With women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and arch rival Miesha Tate coaching, the show is expected to be of heavy interest to MMA fans. TUF is moving to FS1 from FX.

These things almost always get worked out, but not always without pain. In 2009, DirecTV pulled the plug on Versus (now known as NBC Sports Network) in a contract dispute. Fans were angry they weren't able to get UFC and NHL content when it was off the air.

Dana White?s video blog has Anderson Silva?s celebrity hugs and a Ronda Rousey acting cameo

It's not a UFC fight week, but UFC president Dana White is really hyped about the first Fox Sports 1 card, Fight Night 26. He's starting his video blogs a week early. This week's video gives a look back at UFC 162. A few things to look out for in this one:

-- Edson Barboza's beat up feet after leg-kicking Rafaello Oliveira to a win
-- Bruce Buffer's sage advice on how to deal with losing your voice
-- Chuck Liddell, Edward James Olmos, Usher and Roy Jones Jr. hugging Anderson Silva after his loss

Next week?s best: Plenty of fights to keep you busy

Clear your calendars for the next week and a half. Within a seven-day period, the UFC has three events. Check out the biggest and best of the bunch.

UFC Fight Night 27 -- The UFC returns to the Hoosier State on Aug. 28:
-- Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann -- Their first fight was memorable. The second one could vault the winner back into title contendership.
-- Darren Elkins vs. Hatsu Hioki -- Elkins was riding a five-fight win streak when he lost to Chad Mendes in April. How will he recover from the loss, and will fighting in his home state of Indiana help?

UFC 164 -- On Aug. 31, the UFC will head to Milwaukee, which is Algonquin for the good land:
-- Benson Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis -- Think back to the magical moments of their first fight. It was so close until the showtime kick. The two have taken divergent paths since that bout, and it will be fun to watch if Henderson gets revenge or if Pettis can repeat his feat.
-- Josh Barnett vs. Frank Mir: Eleven years have passed since the last time Barnett fought in the UFC. He will face Mir, a heavyweight with almost as long of a career. They both can still bang, and will give fans a fun fight.

UFC Fight Night 28 -- Sept. 4, the UFC will go back to Brazil.
-- Glover Teixeira vs. Ryan Bader: Teixeira needs a win to earn a title shot, and three of his four UFC wins were by stoppage. With so much on the line and him fighting in Brazil, this is bound to be a thriller.
-- Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza vs. Yushin Okami: If you're a grappling fan, this fight will make you happy. Jacare's submission game is legendary, and Okami has never been submitted.

Gus Johnson Signs With Fox but Stays With Showtime

by Michael David SmithLast week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well.

Theoretically, it's even possible that Johnson could be back on the CBS airwaves if CBS ever aired another Strikeforce fight: When Johnson called EliteXC and Strikeforce fights on CBS in the past, that was part of his Showtime deal. It's probably a long shot that we'd see Johnson back on CBS, however.

Reza Madadi, Fox Sports 1 and Mauricio ?Shogun? Rua: Where did they fall on the hot or not list?

Who in the world of MMA had a good week, and who didn't?

Not -- Reza Madadi: The UFC fighter was convicted of aggravated theft in Sweden. He will spend 18 months in jail for his part in a break-in of a Bottega Venetta store. He has two months to appeal the verdict.

Hot -- Fox Sports 1: Just days before it starts up, Fox hopes their all-sports channel will challenge ESPN. The UFC will air an entire card on it during the first day.

Not -- Jason "Mayhem" Miller: He's fought in Strikeforce and the UFC, but his life has taken a weird, worrisome turn as of late. Miller was arrested on domestic violence charges in California this week. Then, he posted a bizarre apology on his website and added some equally odd pictures to his Instagram account.

Hot -- Bellator's improving pay-per-view: The match-up of Quinton"Rampage" Jackson and Tito Ortiz excited very few fans about Bellator's first pay-per-view. However, the additions of Eddie Alvarez vs. Michael Chandler II and Mo Lawal vs. Emanuel Newton II make it a much more interesting card.

Still taking temperature -- Mauricio "Shogun" Rua: After a loss to Alexander Gustafsson, the one-time UFC light heavyweight champ could use a big win. He is getting a chance to make a mark against Chael Sonnen at UFC Fight Night 26 on Fox Sports 1 Saturday.

Previews And Predictions For Daniel Geale Vs. Darren Barker And Nathan Cleverly Vs. Sergey Kovalev

Every other year, Australia and England meet in the world of cricket for a series known as the Ashes. It's going on now, actually, and the two countries play for an urn full of the ashes of the stumps from the first time Australia beat its colonial masters at home, which England burned because they were so cheesed off about the whole thing.

This is to say: To a domestic U.S. audience, the upcoming HBO main event Saturday between Aussie Daniel Geale (left) and Brit Darren Barker (right) is rich with context that can only be detected in those two countries. In the United States, for the layman, it's a battle between two little-known, little-televised foreigners at middleweight who might some day figure as an opponent for HBO darling Gennady Golovkin. But that interpretation underestimates the match-up. Geale and Barker are top 10 talents, two 160-pounders trying to establish themselves as authentic challengers to the middleweight crown worn by Sergio Martinez and that he might not wear much longer as his age advances. While some see it as a talent mismatch, others, primarily in G.B., see it as a potentially close bout that Barker can win.

Throw in an undercard bout from the U.K. between foreign light heavyweights Nathan Cleverly (Wales) and Sergey Kovalev (Russia) and you have a doubleheader which might not make very much sense at all if you consider HBO as an entity purely focused on ratings. This card might end up the worst-viewed card of the year for the network, because U.S. audiences have shown a proclivity for ignoring fights between foreigners that haven't much been glimpsed on HBO or Showtime before. This would be something of an injustice. The more I watch past fights from Geale, Barker, Cleverly and Kovalev, the more convinced I become that this card will generate solid drama between four quality divisional contenders. There is, no matter what some might have you believe, something enjoyable in the act of discovering who is a challenger for the title of The Man in a division and who isn't, no matter how unrecognizable those men are to a broad audience.

The thing is, HBO is and always will be in the subscription business, which is indirectly correlated to the ratings business but not dependent on it. If HBO gets two solid opponents for Golovkin or light heavyweight champ Adonis Stevenson out of this, maybe it ends up being worth it. Maybe it makes no sense for HBO to swallow a bad rating for a night if that's all there is to it. Just speaking from the standpoint of a boxing purist, I am of the view that it's worthwhile to see who's better between Geale-Barker and Clevery-Kovalev. But I also see the potential for appealing style match-ups in both battles.

DANIEL GEALE-DARREN BARKER

For this fight, the opinions seem to be divided along the lines of Brits vs. everyone else. Even the most beautiful bouquets being thrown toward Geale acknowledge that he is merely solid, though, which means that whether you think Barker wins this bout boils down to your estimation of Barker. The risk of losing is worthwhile to both men because of the money to be earned by fighting in the U.S., in Atlantic City, where I'll be ringside Saturday.

My estimation of Barker is higher than those of most non-Brits. I do think his stiff challenge to Martinez in 2011 was partially about catching an aging fighter at the right time. But I also think he showed in that fight that he could hang with the elite of his division, and that he was smart enough to disrupt the machinations of one of the most scintillating talents in the whole sport. Barker lost by 11th round stoppage when he suffered a punctured eardrum, but he demonstrated the strategic aplomb and raw ability to hang with middleweight's best.

Geale is indisputably that. He squeaked by Sebastian Sylvester and Felix Sturm on the scorecards, Sylvester more squeakish than deserved and Sturm about as squeakish as deserved. Geale is plain enough stylistically and personally, but you don't beat those two men on German soil if you don't have a bit of the "oomph" needed to beat top contenders on their home turf. There are boxers who establish themselves by winning in style, and there are those who win just enough and just often enough that they prove themselves just as -- or nearly -- as capable as the former crowd. Winning tells.

Some seem to have noticed, and some seem to have not, that Barker post-Martinez is approaching the sport differently. He fought Martinez in a spoiling style, which made him persona non grata in some circles, but it was the most effective strategy for dealing with a gifted speed/power combination that thrived on counterpunching. Barker was holding his own through six. If he had fought differently over those first six rounds, he might have lost in the selfsame first half. Since the Martinez loss, and since a series of injuries that sidelined him during that period, he has two 4th round stoppage wins over Kerry Hope and Simone Rotolo that point to a change in approach. In both, unlike in the Martinez bout and before, Barker was very aggressive. Hope is a semi-contender at best, Rotolo something worse, but in demonstrating the capacity for more, Barker showed he could potentially handle an aggressive style from Geale. He is still primarily right-handed, save the left hook counter; he is still primarily a head hunter; he is still very good defensively, to the point that he doesn't get hit very often unless he chooses to, such as against the light-hitting Rotolo; he is comfortable on the inside despite usually having a length advantage over his opponents; he is not as fast at 31 as I once thought he was, but he's also sitting down on his punches more and demonstrating more power. He is a rhythm fighter, as he's been deemed by U.K. broadcasters, who takes some time dialing in the range, and he might have problems with late-fight fades.

Both Geale and Barker are all-around solid technically, each with some flaws but none glaring. Geale is faster than Barker, but less powerful. He throws more punches, at least compared to pre-Martinez Barker. His style is a bit more awkward, even though he can be slick at times, because of his funky footwork. Against Sylvester, he appeared quite the slickster; against Sturm, he appeared on the clumsy side. He throws more combinations than Barker, and he is the far better body puncher.  Where Barker is something of a thinker, Geale is something more the natural. Both have high guards to block against punches, Barker with his long forearms and Geale with his hunched defense, but Barker depends more on is brain and Geale more on his instincts and reflexes. Where Barker is right hand heavy, Geale is more two-fisted, and he's more comfortable on the inside than Barker, who's better there than he should be for a taller man. Geale wants to be close. Barker tolerates it.

At worst, I don't see a way this fight isn't close. I wonder about Barker's "give," not that it's easy to fight through a punctured eardrum, but he has quit before at all and he was a bit too quick on the draw in the corner of Lee Purdy in his stoppage loss to welterweight Devon Alexander. But I also see a fighter who is smart, is more tough than not, has a length advantage and power advantage and has shown signs of being able to turn up his volume and make strategic adjustments when needed. Give me Barker by split decision or close unanimous decision -- Geale wins the first couple, Barker wins the majority of the rounds until late, Geale makes a late charge -- and then he becomes a possible spring opponent for Golovkin.

NATHAN CLEVERLY-SERGEY KOVALEV

After his rout of Karo Murat, Cleverly had the look of a fighter who could be the future of the light heavyweight division. Then came the close, difficult win over Tony Bellew and a retraction away from halfway decent competition. In the interim, Kovalev has taken on the mantle of "future of the division" that Cleverly abandoned. Such mantles are fleeting. It could all change around Saturday.

Kovalev's promise comes mostly from his NBC Sports wins, especially from his 3rd round stoppage of top 175-pound contender Gabriel Campillo. Campillo deserved wins over a whole stupid array of 175-pounders, among them Tavoris Cloud and Beibut Shumenov. But the judges didn't like his style, or so it would seem, in the decisions. Kovalev left no doubt about who won against Campillo. There was, though, some doubt about the quality of Campillo's camp for the Kovalev fight. Yet at the same time, you can't dispute that Kovalev has other wins of note -- Darnell Boone dropped him in their first meeting, as Boone is prone to doing, and Kovalev avenged the loss in style; Cornelius White is no contender, but he might be a gatekeeeper of note. Kovalev also is responsible for the death of a fellow figther, Roman Simakov, but it hasn't shown the kind of ill effects on a boxer's competitiveness it sometimes does. Point being: Kovalev has been spectacular of late, but there is cause for doubt that his sometimes-wild combination punching KO power is as fearsome as it has seemed in recent battles.

There's Cleverly, to take advantage if it is an illusion. Cleverly is far faster and far technically superior  to the ragged Kovalev. Cleverly also doesn't have a problem with his chin, which withstood the strong-but-not-elite punching power of Bellew and Murat. Cleverly also is versatile enough to play hide and seek or win a dust-up, although he's better at hide and seek. As much as Cleverly might have the air of a more proven contender, Kovalev has the better win of the two, over Campillo. Is Cleverly obviously better than Campillo? That's where I get hung up on Cleverly's chances. Bellew showed more technical capability against Cleverly than Kovalev can, but Kovalev's also a harder worker than Bellew with more power.

This means I envision Kovalev winning by late KO or close decision. Whoever wins is a viable contender for the champ at 175.

MMA Top 10 Featherweights: Aldo on Top, Mendes No. 2

by Michael David SmithJose Aldo has now made his UFC debut and won the UFC's first featherweight title fight, an entertaining if not terribly competitive unanimous decision over Mark Hominick at UFC 129. So what does the UFC do with Aldo from here?

The fight I think the UFC really wants to make for Aldo is against Kenny Florian, who has more name recognition than anyone else on the UFC's featherweight roster. If Florian wins his featherweight debut against Diego Nunes at UFC 131, he'll instantly step into title contention -- and into the featherweight Top 10.

But for now, the No. 1 featherweight appears headed toward an August showdown with the undefeated Chad Mendes -- and on my featherweight rankings, that's the right call.

'TUF' times: Sonnen says he turned down spot on 'TUF 1,' Jones once cut from tryouts

LAS VEGAS - The debut season of 'The Ultimate Fighter' has long been recognized as the starting point of MMA's current popularity boom and was responsible for launching the careers of stars such as Stephan Bonnar, Kenny Florian, Forrest Griffin, Josh Koscheck, Chris Leben, Diego Sanchez and Mike Swick.

But as successful as the 2005 series debut proved, imagine what it could have been with one Chael P. Sonnen.

Sonnen, who coaches on the upcoming 17th edition of the series, says he actually turned down a spot on "TUF 1."

Former WEC announcer Joe Martinez tapped for octagon debut at UFC on FX 6

Former WEC announcer Joe Martinez will soon make his octagon debut.

Martinez recently revealed to Examiner.com that he has been hired for in-cage duties at next month's UFC on FX 6 event, which takes place on Saturday, Dec. 15 in Australia but due to the time difference airs live in the U.S. on Friday night.

Promotion mainstay Bruce Buffer is set for his familiar announcing role that same weekend at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale.

Take 24 seconds to watch this unbelievable knockout

You have about 24 seconds? Then watch this knockout. Jinh Yu knocked out Darla Harris in what is one of the year's most memorable knockouts. At the Sugar Creek Showdown in Oklahoma, Yu wobbled Harris with a kick to the head, then followed with two power lefts that left Harris stiff.

It's only Yu's second professional fight. She won with a first round submission in her pro debut in April. Clearly, she's a name to look out for.

After successful surgery, mess in Macau, David Mitchell primed for UFC victory

More than two years after dropping his UFC debut, things haven't exactly gone David Mitchell's way.

Injuries, surgery and rehabilitation have left Mitchell out of action for more than 15 months - a streak he had hoped to end earlier this month.

Left without an opponent and some 7,000 miles from home, Mitchell admits it was a frustrating plight. Now he's aiming for a January return, and he's anxious to show the world what he can do when fighting at full strength.

Exit Light: Stephen Smith Scores A Potential KO Of The Year Over Gary Buckland

Stephen Smith snuffed out Gary Buckland with a grisly right uppercut on the Nathan Cleverly-Sergey Kovalev undercard in Cardiff. Smith, a rank outsider, lured his forward-pressing foe into a corner in round five before dipping his right shoulder like a centre forward moving on his marker and delivering a fight-ending hammer blow inside of Buckland’s left jab. Unconscious on impact, the British junior lightweight champion careered forward onto his face ala Manny Pacquiao versus Juan Manuel Marquez, and for a few troubling minutes he was left prostrate where he’d landed as Smith cut short his celebrations, sank to his knees and prayed. Thankfully, after being administered oxygen, Buckland regained his feet and left the ring under his own steam.

It was a stunning finish -- a knockout of the year candidate and one that beckoned “Swifty” in from the cold after a period left wandering the wilds following his own devastating kayo loss to Buckland’s stablemate, Lee Selby. Buckland (27-3, 9 KOs), had been aiming to secure a Lonsdale belt outright before moving onto the European stage, however, the local man needs to convalesce after suffering the sort of unspeakable setback that will merit an audit.

Smith (9st 4lb) began brightly and landed a right uppercut followed by a series of left jabs as Buckland attempted to push him around and establish his strength (the Welshman is a former lightweight, whereas Smith had moved up from the featherweight ranks). Buckland (9st 2lb 8oz) began to work himself up into a lather in round 2 while Smith used his legs and looked to counter from range. A hard right uppercut followed by a stinging left hook spurred Buckland on in the 3rd and as he found his groove it appeared that Smith might be outworked.

The Merseyside hitter scotched that notion in the 4th with a stiff right hand that clocked Buckland herding in. Reading the situation incorrectly, Smith (17-1, 10 KOs), cut loose on the champion while his corner, one that included brother Paul and trainer Joe Gallagher, hollered at him frantically in a bid to tip him off and settle him back down. Buckland, bleeding from his left eye and perhaps more hurt than he was letting on, trailed Smith around the ring -- a tack that would ultimately lead to his undoing.

Smith becomes a two-weight British champion and will now face Dewsbury’s Gary Sykes.

Quebec commission declines to hear Alessio Sakara's UFC 154 appeal request

Patrick Cote's controversial UFC 154 disqualification victory over Alessio Sakara will stand.

On Friday, Quebec's La Regie des alcools des courses et des jeux (the baord that governs combat sports in the province) declined to hear Sakara's protest that referee Dan Miragliotta mishandled the bout, which took place Nov. 17 at Montreal's Bell Centre.

French-language outlet LaPress.ca was the first to report the board's decision.

MMA Top 10 Women's Pound-for-Pound

by Michael David SmithGina CaranoThese are uncertain times for women's mixed martial arts. Strikeforce has been the industry leader in female fights, while the UFC has maintained that it has no interest in putting women in the Octagon. So now that the UFC runs Strikeforce, does that mean women's MMA is endangered?

Not necessarily. The Strikeforce women were invited to the UFC's recent fighter summit in Las Vegas, which indicates that Zuffa thinks women have a future within the company, and next month's return of the sport's biggest female star, Gina Carano, will result in a publicity boost for women's MMA.

So as I review the top 10 female fighters in mixed martial arts, I'm confident that it's a list of fighters whose futures are bright. Even if I'm not sure where and when most of them will fight next.

Dana White doesn?t think ?The Ultimate Fighter? phenom Uriah Hall is a fighter

Uriah Hall burst onto the UFC scene with memorable fights on "The Ultimate Fighter." We named his knockout of Adam Cella the best knockout of the first quarter of this year. He scored two more knockouts on his way to the finals of the show.

But all of the TUF fights were held in the gym, with the tightly controlled environment of a television show taping and a small crowd. Once he was put under the UFC lights, Hall fizzled. He lost to Kelvin Gastelum in the TUF finale, then looked equally lost in the cage with John Howard on Saturday. UFC president Dana White had some harsh but fair criticism for Hall.

"I love Uriah Hall," White told reporters after the fights. "I have a great relationship with this kid. He's one of the nicest human beings you can ever meet. He's not a fighter, man."

Remember that one of White's most motivating phrases to fighters is from TUF. "Do you want to be a [expletive] fighter?" When they showed a lack of commitment or determination, White would rally castmembers with this simple question. Some fighters would realize that perhaps getting punched in the face for a living wasn't for them. Most would listen to White's words and try to live up to his expectations.

But with Hall, there isn't a speech. White has looked at Hall's two fights in the UFC, both losses, and he just doesn't see a fighter. It may not be a death knell to Hall's career, but it is a punishing blow.
