Gus Johnson Signs With Fox but Stays With Showtime

by Michael David SmithLast week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well.

Theoretically, it's even possible that Johnson could be back on the CBS airwaves if CBS ever aired another Strikeforce fight: When Johnson called EliteXC and Strikeforce fights on CBS in the past, that was part of his Showtime deal. It's probably a long shot that we'd see Johnson back on CBS, however.

Urijah Faber and Court McGee take UFC 157 wins

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Urijah Faber and Court McGee got back on the winning track at UFC 157 on Saturday.

Faber got a first-round submission win over Ivan Menjivar. Faber and Menjivar started the fight with a rolling takedown and Faber ended up on top. He worked the top position until Menjivar got back to his feet. Faber held on, and while attached to Menjivar's back, Faber swung around and sunk in a rear naked choke. Menjivar tapped at 4:34 in the first round. The Anaheim crowd erupted for "The California Kid."

It was an important win for Faber after he lost a title fight to Renan Barao in July. The win puts him at 27-6, with five of his losses coming in title fights.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

In earlier action, Court McGee punched his way to a decision win over Josh Neer. McGee used an effective strategy early on of working Josh Neer's body. Throughout the first round, Neer was hobbled by McGee's body punches. But in the second, McGee worked more on headshots. Though it wasn't as effective, McGee outstruck Neer. In the final round, McGee worked the ground game and controlled Neer while still leading on strikes. All three judges saw it 30-27 for McGee.

It was McGee's first fight at welterweight.

?I felt great at 170 lbs. This was a great move for me. I felt stronger, faster and had a lot more gas. I was told by FightMetric that I broke the record for most significant strikes ever in a welterweight fight and feel great. I could have stopped it, maybe, early with body shots but I was glad I put on a good performance.?

After the win, McGee's record is 15-3. Though he won "The Ultimate Fighter," he also lost two fights in 2012.

Jose Aldo Agrees to Defend Title Against Anthony Pettis

Aldo

During the post fight media scrum with UFC President Dana White, he said UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo was refusing to fight Anthony Pettis. The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Sharif Bogere, Donnie Nietes And Billy Dib

The schedule is headlined by a boxing video for once. Don’t get excited. It’s not because it’s going to be a great week of boxing. There will most likely be a very cool ring walk, but that’s all I can guarantee you, folks.

That might be a bit harsh. There’s a decent lightweight fight on Showtime featuring the man in the video, Sharif Bogere, and a good junior flyweight bout that’s not on TV. Such is life.

  • Sharif Bogere vs. Richard Abril, Saturday, Showtime, Las Vegas. This is an interesting lightweight fight, but one that fails to get me going in any serious way. Uganda’s Bogere (he of the impressive ring walk/cage carry) is a fighter who’s high on activity and low on refinement. He doesn’t have a huge fan base, probably because he’s Ugandan. Abril (17-3-1), of Cuba, doesn’t have  a huge fan base because he’s a bit of a spoiler. And because he’s from Cuba. He does have a fair bit of sympathy from hardcore fans, though, after being on the wrong end of a puzzling decision against Brandon Rios. A decision almost as puzzling as the question: “If he’s from Cuba, why isn’t his name Ricardo?” Bogere (23-0, 15 KO) will have to press the action here and try to deal with Abril’s 5" height advantage. Don’t think that he won’t try though. Bogere is nothing if not tenacious. I just can’t see him getting around the Cuban’s "jab, jab, jab, right hand, tie up on the inside" routine. Give me Abril by unanimous decision.
  • Donnie Nietes vs. Moises Fuentes, Saturday, Manila. The best bout of the week is happening at junior flyweight. It’s not on TV, did I mention that? Mexico’s Fuentes (16-1, 8 KO), #2 on the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board’s strawweight rankings, is moving up in weight and travelling to the Phillipines to face Nietes (31-1-3, 17 KO), the board’s #4 at junior fly. Despite that, Fuentes will still be the much bigger dude, at a relatively towering 5’ 7”. Lucky for Nietes, he doesn’t mind giving away a bit of height. In fact, he’s pretty good at getting taller guys to come on to him before he counterpunches them with looping rights. The question is, can he do it with a guy as good as Fuentes? It’ll be hard; Fuentes, in true Mexican style, will go to the body rather than chopping aimlessly at his Filipino opponent’s head. I reckon Fuentes will be a natural at the weight, so I’ll take him by closer-than-it-should-be split decision.
  • Billy Dib vs. Evgeny Gradovich, Friday, ESPN2, Mashantucket Conn. Billy Dib (35-1, 21 KO), promoted by 50 Cent, is back on TV. Despite my featherweight compatriot’s reputation for being boring, I don’t think this will be too bad a fight. It’s mainly down to his opponent, the man with the best nickname in boxing, Evgeny “The Mexican Russian” Gradovich (15-0, 8 KO). As his name suggests, Gradovich fights like a man from Los Mochis, despite having grown up roughly 1,500 miles from Moscow on the western edge of Siberia. Gradovich is going to tuck his chin and plough forward like a serf in a wheat field and Dib is going to have to deal with it, which should lead to an entertaining game of cat and mouse at the very least. Not sure who wins – Gradovich hasn’t really fought anyone that good, though neither has Dib in the last five years.
  • The Rest. Friday offers another show, with flyweights Omar Soto (23-9, 15 KO) and Julian Rivera (12-7-1, 2 KO) doing battle on Telemundo… Saturday brings a FSN/Fox Deportes card headlined by junior welterweight prospect Omar Figueroa (19-0-1, 15 KO) against Henry Aurad (14-6-1, 11 KO)… HBO is debuting a new mini-documentary series on Tuesday March 5. The new series, called “Cornered,” will be similar to “2 Days” but will focus on boxing’s out-of-the-ring personalities. The first ep follows ring announcer Michael Buffer.

UFC 157 picks from Kevin Iole, Maggie Hendricks and Cagereaders like you

After months of build-up, we're almost to the historic bout between Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche, which headlines UFC 157 in Anaheim. Here is how we think the fights will go. A big thank you to all the Cagereaders who contributed their picks.

Kevin Iole ?Ronda Rousey SUB1 Liz Carmouche: Scottie Bowman, the greatest hockey coach ever, always would say he'd stick with the hot hand. In this case, the hot hand is Rousey. She's got a far better athletic pedigree and she's looked unbeatable against elite competition in Kaufmann and Tate. First-round arm bar win for Rousey

Maggie Hendricks ? Ronda Rousey SUB1 Liz Carmouche: The thing about Rousey's armbar is that it's going to be unstoppable until someone stops it. Brilliant, right? Because of the move's unpredictability, it's equally difficult to predict who will be the one who can stop it.

[Also: Ronda Rousey doesn't want to touch UFC title belt before fighting]

Cagereader ? My pick: Ronda Rousey by first round armbar. Yes, again. I don't think anyone's got her figured out yet, and her aggression is too much to deal with for anyone at this point. -- Dan Butera

Cagereader ? Rousey. She has more to offer than Carmouche. I think it will be Rousey's longest fight ever since Carmouche is a scrappy chick. She definitely has her work cut out for her. -- Charlotte Petroskey

***

Kevin Iole ? Dan Henderson TKO2 Lyoto Machida: Henderson is going to grind on Machida and wear him down until he gets enough space to land his big right hand.

Maggie Hendricks ? Dan Henderson W3 Lyoto Machida: As Kevin Iole points out in his column, Machida is not the elusive fighter he once was. Henderson will wear him down and take the bout.

Cagereader ? I'll take Machida over Henderson. Machida's height, reach, and long torso is going to make it very hard for Hendo to impose his will. Throw in Machida's speed advantage, faster punches, better cardio, and youth, and this one could end up being lopsided. Dan Henderson, as always, does have a puncher's chance, but that is about it in my opinion. -- Buddy Kreutzer

***

Kevin Iole ? Urijah Faber SUB3 Ivan Menjivar: Faber hasn't fought like a star in a while and the pressure is on him to do so. He's primed for a good performance and I think he delivers it.

Maggie Hendricks ? Urijah Faber SUB2 Ivan Menjivar: Fighting in California, Faber should be able to get back on the winning track and outgrapple Menjivar for a win.

[Also: How Dana White's about-face on women's MMA became official]

Cagereader ? Though both Faber and his opponent are very dynamic and multidimensional, predict the intense energy will lead to an unpredictable TKO with Faber winning! -- Ernie Brewer

***

Kevin Iole ? Josh Neer W3 Court McGee: This is a flip-a-coin match so I'm going to go with the guy with more experience.

Maggie Hendricks ? Court McGee W3 Josh Neer: Yep, pretty much what Kevin said, so my coin flipped to McGee.

Cagereader ? Hard not to like McGee's drop to 170. His smothering style should win the day. McGee by Decision. - John Wilcox

***

Kevin Iole ? Josh Koscheck W3 Robbie Lawler: Lawler is simply not the same fighter he once was. I think Koscheck wins a pretty wide decision here.

Maggie Hendricks ? Josh Koscheck W3 Robbie Lawler: Though Koscheck is coming off of a loss, Lawler hasn't done much to show he can stop Koscheck's wrestling or striking.

Cagereader ? I think Koscheck to beat Lawler. Kos will be desperate to get back into the win column and I see him wearing down Robbie with his outstanding wrestling ability and finishing him late on as Lawler tires. Koscheck by RNC round 3. - Craig Donaldson

Bellator Adds Alexis Vila to Bantamweight Division

by Michael David Smith

As it continues to carve out a niche for itself as the No. 2 promotion in mixed martial arts, Bellator has once again signed a fighter who's big on talent and capable of bringing a great deal of excitement into the cage in former Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Alexis Vila.

Before we get into all the reasons Vila is an exciting addition to Bellator's bantamweight tournament, let's get the two big problems out of the way ...
1. He's old: He turned 40 in March.
2. He's tiny: In the Olympics he wrestled at 105 pounds and most recently fought in MMA at 125 pounds.

Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Why MMA Fans Should Care

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley will fight Saturday night in Las Vegas. We'll have full results and live round-by-round scoring for Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley on Saturday night, which may lead to a few readers wondering, What's boxing news doing on an MMA site? Here are five reasons why you, if you're an MMA fan, should care about Pacquiao vs. Mosley:

1. It's the biggest combat sports event of the year.
For as much as the UFC has gained on -- and in some respects surpassed -- the popularity of boxing, the biggest fights in boxing still exceed the biggest fights in the UFC in terms of pay-per-view buys and worldwide media attention. Although the MGM Grand in Las Vegas obviously won't attract nearly as many fans as the 55,000 who came out to see Georges St. Pierre in Toronto, Pacquiao vs. Mosley will surely get more pay-per-view buys in the United States, far more mainstream media attention and far more attention globally, as Pacquiao is a draw throughout Asia and the single biggest celebrity in the Philippines, a country of nearly 100 million people. This is a major worldwide sporting event.

UFC Announces New Insurance for Fighters

by Michael David SmithOne of the things that has always separated the UFC from sports leagues like the NFL, NBA and MLB is the lack of insurance for UFC fighters for injuries suffered outside the Octagon. But as the UFC grows, that appears to be changing.

Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce, has announced that its 350 or so fighters, who are all independent contractors, will now be eligible for what it calls "customized accident insurance coverage." The policy will cover not just accidental injuries suffered in training, but also injuries suffered in car accidents or other injuries that have nothing to do with the fighters' MMA careers.

"As this sport continues to grow, we have been working hard to secure additional insurance coverage so that our athletes can perform at the highest levels," UFC President Dana White said in the announcement. "We're proud to give our athletes access to this type of insurance."

James Te Huna?s excellent ?Men in Black? walk-in at UFC on Fuel 7 (Video)

Perhaps James Te Huna is huge Will Smith fan. Maybe he is a sucker for 90s nostalgia. Or he could just be concerned with protecting the Earth from aliens. Whatever the reason, he pulled out "Men in Black" from the mothballs to use for an entrance to his fight with Ryan Jimmo at UFC on Fuel 7. Te Huna didn't just walk out to it, he and his cornermen dressed up in full MiB outfits and perfectly did the dance from the Will Smith video.

Will Smith brought Te Huna some luck, because he won a decision over Jimmo. Hopefully, "Parents Just Don't Understand" will show up at his next fight.

UFC 157, which White is already calling the biggest women's fight of all time, saw Ronda continue to rise as a variety of quality wins, debuts, and upsets transpired further down the card. It's time to see what's next for the men and women of UFC 157 that had their hands raised at the Honda Center.

Showtime Steals Floyd Mayweather From HBO, Books Him Against Robert Guerrero (And Then Some)

(October 30, 2012; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Professional boxer Floyd Mayweather watches the game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center. Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports)

Major boxing news Tuesday: The biggest name in boxing in the United States and the country's highest-paid athlete in any sport, Floyd Mayweather, has signed a long-term deal with Showtime, starting with his next fight against Robert Guerrero in May, in a move away from industry giant HBO that isn't a total shocker but that has a whole bevy of potentially huge ramifications for the business of boxing.

We saw this once before, kind of, when Showtime stole the other biggest name in U.S. boxing, Manny Pacquiao, away from HBO for a fight. But they key word there is "once" -- HBO upped its game, healed its rift with Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank and stole him right back. This is a (potentially) six-fight theft.

The how-tos and meanings of all this are fairly dizzying. Where to even start?

HBO Versus Showtime

HBO is the bigger network of the two, but the gap has been closing. By the looks of things, even as HBO has shrunk its boxing budget because of diminishing returns, Showtime has been viewing boxing as its way of expanding its reach. The financials on this will be very interesting, once they come out. Showtime has been throwing a lot of money at boxing, even outspending HBO on some fights, and Mayweather is the kind of guy who tries to extract every penny he can from a deal. I bet Showtime paid out the wazoo under this one, or else was willing to make a greater commitment in number of fights than HBO, which ends up being about the same thing. It's said to be a "unique revenue-sharing deal" between Showtime and Mayweather, whatever that means. I bet it means a lot of money, one way or the other. Mayweather's team, which it must be cautioned has a knack for exaggerating his earnings, offered this: "At this record-setting PPV performance level, if all six fights contemplated by this deal occur, it will be the richest individual athlete deal in all of sports."

Showtime's approach in the past year has been a high-risk, potentially high-reward one. Its alliance with Golden Boy Promotions and Al Haymon has come under fire in the past year with ex-GBP official Stephen Espinoza at the helm, and has resulted in some crappy fights. But I'd have to guess it also has helped give them an edge against HBO with the golden goose of GBP/Haymon fighters, aka Mayweather. Another edge for Showtime is CBS. CBS owns Showtime, has gotten back into airing live boxing and has been used as a promotional vehicle for Showtime pay-per-views as it will be again here (CBS was also one of the things that helped net Pacquiao back when, before HBO used its less gigantic corporate alliances [TNT, CNN, etc.] to expand its promotional might and win Pacquiao back). I also wouldn't be surprised if it turns out Showtime is giving Mayweather more control over how he's marketed via the network, as Mayweather had soured on HBO's handling of him on its 24/7 documentary/marketing series. There have been hints of cultivation here for a long time, which is why I say it's not a "total shocker," but it definitely is a big deal.

In the short-term, it all has the look of a good gamble. Mayweather is now the undisputed champion of pay-per-view in the United States, as he consistently exceeds the 1 million buy mark. His arrival will bring some buzz to Showtime and he'll sell well for them in May. In the long-term, I have to wonder. Mayweather turns 36 years old this weekend. He's still arguably the best fighter in the world, but he's not what he once was. If he gets splattered any time soon like Pacquiao did in his last fight, this could look like a burdensome deal for a declining fighter. He's fought once a year for the past four years, but the current deal calls for "up to six" fights over 30 months, and it's hard to imagine him fighting THAT often.

This isn't the death of HBO boxing or anything like it, but it certainly does put the network on the defensive. The four biggest attractions in the United States are Mayweather, Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. Mayweather is with Showtime now, and he's the one with the best track record. Alvarez, still significantly untested and on the verge of fighting a much more difficult opponent than he ever has in Austin Trout, has been fighting on Showtime rather than HBO and with his interest in meeting Mayweather, we have to assume he'll continue to do so. Pacquiao's decline is far more precipitous than Mayweather's, and while he'll no doubt remain "big" for at least one more fight until people see what he has left and whether he can avenge his loss to Juan Manuel Marquez, he's probably the one with the least upside of this foursome. Chavez, meanwhile, has his own element of risk in that he's chronically lazy and has more than once abused substances that are worrisome for his long-term future. Pacquiao and Chavez, two Top Rank fighters, have been fighting on HBO.

One assumes they will continue to do so; this move furthers the bifurcation of the sport between HBO/Top Rank and Showtime/Golden Boy. Top Rank had already said that network bifurcation makes it harder to do Top Rank-Golden Boy fights, and while I'm not completely sold on it, the deeper and more pronounced the divisions become, the chances of the network allegiances getting in the way of bouts probably increase.

For now, HBO has one prominent GBP/Haymon fighter on its network, up-and-coming Adrien Broner, and one has to think this puts the impetus on HBO boxing boss Ken Hershman to cultivate the next big thing. But, as noted after Broner's fight this weekend, Broner puts HBO in a compromised position -- Showtime's knack for stealing away GBP/Haymon fighters means HBO has less leverage to insist on the kind of bouts they'd like him to take, and that means a less clear path toward moving from up-and-comer to superstar. HBO takes a hit here, no doubt, but maybe it puts Hershman in his more comfortable position from when he ran Showtime to be forced to innovate against an opponent who has some inherent advantages.

Mayweather Vs. Robert Guerrero

On May 4, Mayweather will fight fellow welterweight Guerrero, then. Non-boxing fans probably are wondering, "Who's that?" Guerrero is a top five welterweight, behind Mayweather, Marquez, Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley, coming off a stirring victory in a brawl against Andre Berto that was a Fight of the Year finalist. His arrival at welterweight is very fresh, as he really started as a featherweight and has slowly been climbing up in weight until making a big jump to 147 pounds in 2012. Competitively, he has as good an argument as anyone in the division for facing Mayweather, which isn't the same as saying he will win or be anything less than a prohibitive underdog. But he's proven himself at the weight against ranked opponents, proven he can take a punch from naturally bigger men and has won against a variety of styles. Guerrero is no Mayweather -- nobody is -- but he's a smart fighter who knows how to box, and he's got the grit to stick out the rough spots.

Guerrero probably got this fight, though, due to his "story," one that makes him a perfect foil to the villainous Mayweather. That story, involving his wife's leukemia and how she overcame it and how it affected his boxing career, will get a lot of national media attention, so I won't belabor it. But that attention gives Mayweather-Guerrero a marketing angle to help sell a fight involving a Mayweather opponent who doesn't have the profile outside boxing of a Shane Mosley or the built-in ethnic/regional fan base of a Miguel Cotto, although Guerrero does have a loyal following in Northen California.

Since Mayweather has already beaten Marquez and the fight with Pacquiao fell apart or never got off the ground so many times I've lost count, and since Bradley isn't a big draw and is with GBP rival Top Rank, that puts Guerrero in the next tier of best possible opponents in all the metrics. The Alvarez fight might've been at the top of that list, because Alvarez is naturally bigger as a strong junior middleweight and is riotously popular with the Mexican fan base. But Alvarez is still young, and if he makes it past Trout -- possibly on the undercard of Mayweather-Guerrero -- that fight becomes double-huge, because the knock on Alvarez has been that he isn't ready for someone like Mayweather based on his level of competition. He'd be significantly more ready if he beat a skilled craftsman like Trout, who like most people isn't as good as Mayweather but profiles similarly to him in many regards. Since Mayweather plans to fight again in September, the idea very clearly seems to be to match those two around Mexican Independence Day.

We'll preview the hell out of Mayweather-Guerrero closer to the fight, but it boils down to nearly as good a fight as was makeable for Mayweather next. I could ask for more, but this is a fight I can live with, and even look forward to, albeit not on pins and needles.

MMA Top 10 Featherweights: Aldo on Top, Mendes No. 2

by Michael David SmithJose Aldo has now made his UFC debut and won the UFC's first featherweight title fight, an entertaining if not terribly competitive unanimous decision over Mark Hominick at UFC 129. So what does the UFC do with Aldo from here?

The fight I think the UFC really wants to make for Aldo is against Kenny Florian, who has more name recognition than anyone else on the UFC's featherweight roster. If Florian wins his featherweight debut against Diego Nunes at UFC 131, he'll instantly step into title contention -- and into the featherweight Top 10.

But for now, the No. 1 featherweight appears headed toward an August showdown with the undefeated Chad Mendes -- and on my featherweight rankings, that's the right call.

MMA Top 10 Welterweights: Few Challenges in Sight for GSP

by Michael David SmithGeorges St-PierreIt's hard to believe that Georges St. Pierre could win his ninth straight fight, defending his welterweight title in front of 55,000 fans in one of the biggest events in UFC history, and have it feel like something of a letdown.

But that is how St. Pierre's unanimous decision victory over Jake Shields felt to many fans: We've seen this so many times -- St. Pierre spending 25 minutes demonstrating that the other man in the Octagon is simply nowhere near as good as he is -- that it's starting to feel routine. And that's not how one of the greatest fighters in history stepping into the Octagon should feel.

So are there any challenges remaining in the welterweight division? We'll look at that question as we run down the Top 10 welterweights in MMA.

Lightweight Anthony Pettis to face featherweight champ Jose Aldo in August

Immediately after UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo beat Frankie Edgar at UFC 156, Anthony Pettis contacted UFC president Dana White to say he wanted a shot at Aldo. Pettis is a lightweight who knocked out Donald Cerrone two weeks ago. Now, Pettis is getting his shot at the featherweight belt. USA Today reports that Pettis will face Aldo on Aug. 3.

"Two of the baddest dudes in the fight business are going to fight at 145 pounds," White said. "These guys are two of the most amazing, gravity-defying athletes in the sport. I am so pumped for this fight."

Ricardo Lamas, who knocked out Pettis' teammate Erik Koch two weeks ago, had been promised the next shot at the featherweight belt. Pettis, a lightweight for his entire career, had been promised the next shot at the lightweight belt after champion Benson Henderson faces Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez.

[Kevin Iole: Frankie Edgar should drop down another weight class]

On Monday, Pettis used his Twitter account to say he was tired of waiting.

And now he will get what he wants. While there's no doubt Pettis-Aldo will be an exciting bout, Lamas was granted the next title shot, and did nothing to lose his shot except not send a text to White. He can commiserate with Johny Hendricks, the welterweight who earned a title shot but then was passed over for Nick Diaz.

Let this be a lesson to every fighter who wants a chance at the belt: the squeaky wheel gets the oil and a shot to be a champion. If you've heard that you're the no. 1 contender, don't stop campaigning until that bout agreement is signed. Text White. Do interviews. Use Twitter to continually call out the champion. It may have a pro wrestling-flavor, but it's clearly what the UFC wants.

Gus Johnson's Contract Up at CBS

by Michael David SmithGus Johnson, the lead mixed martial arts play-by-play man for CBS who has called many of the most-watched fights in the sport's history, is reportedly leaving the network.

Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated reports that Johnson, who's best known for calling college football and the NFL, is leaving after failing to come to terms on a new contract with the network. UPDATE: The New York Daily News reports that while Johnson's contract with CBS has expired, it's still possible he could reach a new deal.

It's not clear whether Johnson is also out at Showtime, where he has been both a boxing and MMA play-by-play voice. Johnson will still be part of Saturday night's Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley pay-per-view broadcast, but it seems unlikely that Johnson would stick around at Showtime, which a division of the CBS Corporation, for long.
