Champ Rockhold calls Larkin attack 'pretty amateur,' eyes early 2013 for return
When officials announced the Jan. 12 event in early November, Rockhold said he informed them a wrist injury lingered and that he was unable to fight.
That's why he's particularly irritated by a series of verbal attacks from Lorenz Larkin regarding his willingness to compete.

MMA Marketplace: Strikeforce?s best
Strikeforce will come to an end on Saturday, so you should get their merchandise while the getting's good. The only problem is that since Zuffa, the parent company of the both the UFC and Strikeforce, bought the promotion, they don't have much. Still, there are a few items worth buying:
The hoodie at left is available in four different colors, and is going for $49.95. You can also get Strikeforce's gloves for $54.95.

Growth Spurt: Frankie Gavin Punch Perfect In The Black Country
As guests go, Frankie Gavin proved to be the worst of them. At Walsall Town Hall Friday, against local favourite Jason Welborn, Gavin trod mud on the carpet, emptied the fridge and flipped his host’s other invitees the bird, and he did it in the most peremptory way imaginable. Welborn barely landed a punch through six rounds before Gavin ended his challenge in round 7 with a sneaky left hand that snaked under the Tividale man’s guard and buried its way into his solar plexus. Welborn sank down for a count, beaten at that point, before exhibiting a mettlesome spirit in rising to accept the obligatory peppering in closing. Referee Ian John-Lewis from England pulled the plug at the 2:35 mark with Welborn cowed into the ropes.
Gavin, Birmingham, 15-0 (11), continues his renaissance after a dowdy start to life as a professional fighter. The British welterweight champion, making his first defence here, has a rare mastery of distance and range that is unteachable in the gymnasium. The champion’s speed of foot (and their placement) affords him control of opponents, who he snipes with an excellent southpaw right jab before mixing in sharp lefts varied upstairs and down. He possibly leaves his head over his front foot a little too often for safe-keeping, yet can get away with it at this level thanks to his radar-like head movement. It is unfortunate indeed that Welborn, 11-2 (5), was made to look like a lumbering lug from a chop-socky movie, swinging and missing while walking onto a nose-job. For one so hard working, he probably deserved better.
Gavin bloodied Welborn’s beak in the 2nd round and won every minute of the others, despite catching a breather in the 5th. Trainer Tom Chaney, working alongside Dean Powell in the corner, reminded the 27-year-old against coasting between rounds and Gavin, mindful of what he required in terms of performance, meted out a boxing lesson in round 6.
The finish was neat. As Welborn, 146 ¼, charged, Gavin, 146 ½, backed up, set himself and then backed up again before springing his trap. It was exactly the type of finish both he and his team would have been hoping for. A match against Manchester powerhouse Denton Vassell in the coming months would bring him on again.
Martin Gethin, Walsall, became British lightweight champion in the chief supporting bout, taking apart Hove muscleman Ben Murphy in 9 rounds. The visitor, who swings for the fences with every punch, dipped and winged his way into an early lead but he never looked comfortable in doing so. Gethin, 24-3-1 (11), meanwhile was unflappability itself. He walked Murphy, 9-6-1 (5), down methodically behind straight punches mixed with smart uppercuts, and here’s the thing; he barely wasted a single one of them. A concerted body assault dipped Murphy’s knees in round 8 and, after being pinned against the strands for a full 56 seconds in the subsequent frame, third man Marcus McDonnell of England rescued him from a bombardment he was unable to fire back from.
To see the pair beforehand -- Murphy, bulky, bald-headed and mad-keen in tiger print shorts and Gethin, unassuming, long-limbed and wiry -- it looked a one horse race. Thankfully, boxing isn’t all about physicality (for the time being at least) and Gethin’s simple but effective plot to put Murphy into reverse, backed up with a less obvious strength than his foe’s, robbed the underdog of all his momentum.
Gethin’s combinations flowed effortlessly and smacked into Murphy’s head and torso with increasing regularity. It showed that, even an opponent such as Murphy, who boasted of an insane level of fitness pre-fight, will run out of puff soon enough if repeatedly punched in the face. “The Quiet Man”, as the 29-year-old Gethin is known, could now go on to face the winner of the March do-over between “Dirty” Derry Matthews and Anthony “Million Dollar” Crolla after this, the best performance of his career. Both fighters weighed in at 134 ½.

Donald Cerrone wants to go pro as a wakeboarder
UFC lightweight Donald Cerrone will fight Anthony Pettis at the UFC's next card on Fox, but a win over his fellow WEC veteran isn't Cerrone's only goal for 2013. He told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that he plans to go pro as a wakeboarder this year.
"I love wakeboarding and definitely plan on going pro this year," Cerrone said.
Like in MMA, wakeboarding has a local circuit where Cerrone will have to start. He won't make any money at the lower levels. Wakeboarders are pulled behind motor boats on wakeboards, and compete by doing tricks on the board. It's like a mix of surfing, water skiing and snowboarding.
Cerrone, who is fond of riding horses, roping cattle and the like, said worries about getting injured outside of training will not sideline him.
"This summer, I'll definitely be out on the water and riding my horses."
"For me, I'm trying to be a professional wakeboarder. It's just like when I'm trying to be a professional cagefighter. It's not like I'm fooling around, getting drunk and recklessly doing it. It's another professional sport."
But that doesn't mean he'll do it against the UFC's wishes. He will talk with UFC brass.
"I'm going to sit down, and talk with the big guys and sort it all out."
What do you think of Cerrone's plan to become a two-sport athlete? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Lucas Martins thought his manager was pranking him about UFC on FX 7 debut
Lucas Martins is making his UFC debut at UFC on FX 7 on Saturday night as a late add to the card. Justin Salas was injured in training around New Year's Eve, and Martins didn't believe it when he got the call to fill in. He told MMA Junkie he thought his management was pranking him.
"It was New Year's Day," Martins said. "I could not believe my management and the UFC were working on New Year's Day. When they called I thought, 'Is this a joke? This is New Year's Day. No one is working. They are recovering from the celebration."
Now, that would be a mean joke. Hey, Lucas your dream has just come true! Call your friends, your family and everyone who has ever helped you get to the UFC ... oh wait. We're kidding. Pretty sure I'd fire my manager for a joke like that.
But Martins' record is no joke. He's 12-0, and won the last six fights by knockout or submission, making him an interesting test for Edson Barboza.

Cold weather, hot fights: The top five bouts of January
Happy January, Cagereaders. It's a new year, which means we have a fresh slate of fights to discuss, dissect, predict and then finally enjoy. Here are Cagewriter's top five. Which ones are you most excited about? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
Michael Chandler vs. Rick Hawn on Jan. 17: Bellator's move to Spike TV is starting with a bang. Lightweight champion Chandler will defend his belt for the first time (his bout with Akihiro Gono was a non-title bout.) He'll have to face Hawn, an Olympian in judo who won his last three fights with two knockouts and a decision.
Pat Curran vs. Patricio Freire on Jan. 17: On the same night, Curran will put his featherweight title against Freire, a frightening striker who has been waiting for Curran since May.
Vitor Belfort vs. Michael Bisping on January 19: The UFC on FX card will be headlined by a fight that could decide Anderson Silva's next challenger. Even without title implications hanging over it, Belfort taking on Bisping in Brazil is just a fun fight.
Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis on January 26: Fighters don't have to dislike each other for a good fight to happen, but it does make it a whole lot of fun. Pettis and Cerrone have been jawing at each other for months, and they finally get to settle their score at the UFC's next Fox card. Bonus: They're both thrilling strikers who seem incapable of boring fights.
Demetrious Johnson vs. John Dodson on January 26: For the main event of UFC on Fox 6, Johnson will get his first chance to defend the UFC's flyweight belt. It will be speed vs. speed in the cage, which is both fun and exhausting to watch.

MMA Top 10 Welterweights: Few Challenges in Sight for GSP
But that is how St. Pierre's unanimous decision victory over Jake Shields felt to many fans: We've seen this so many times -- St. Pierre spending 25 minutes demonstrating that the other man in the Octagon is simply nowhere near as good as he is -- that it's starting to feel routine. And that's not how one of the greatest fighters in history stepping into the Octagon should feel.
So are there any challenges remaining in the welterweight division? We'll look at that question as we run down the Top 10 welterweights in MMA.

Vitor Belfort?s war of words with Chael Sonnen shows he is crazy like a fox
After beating Michael Bisping in a middleweight bout at UFC on FX 7, Vitor Belfort said he wanted a shot at the UFC light heavyweight belt. He called Chael Sonnen a clown, and asked for a "champion vs. champion" shot at Jon Jones.
He continued during the UFC postfight show on Fuel.
?[Sonnen] is a clown. Get out. Get out of the way. He just got knocked out pretty bad by Anderson Silva then he fights Jon Jones. He doesn?t deserve the reality show. Let me fight - real champion versus real champion. I know he?s a good athlete, but he needs to go to the back of the line. Let me fight the rematch.?
Belfort fought Jones in September and lost by submission. Sonnen will fight Jones in April after the conclusion of "The Ultimate Fighter." They will coach against each other on the show. Sonnen, a commentator on the postfight show, immediately responded.
?Let me be really clear and speak directly to you Vitor. You have been telling the world that you want to meet Jesus and I will gladly arrange that travel, but first I am going to get rid of Jon Jones, then you are next. Vitor, I accept. Don?t make any mistake about that. You have called me out twice now,? Sonnen said.
Their war of words continued on Twitter.
@sonnench You don't have the power to send me to Jesus, buy I can provide you with an early encounter with Satan!

Belfort's vitriol at Sonnen seemed so out of place. Belfort is a middleweight, and if he's looking for another shot at the light heavyweight title, perhaps he should look for a middleweight fight first?
But what Belfort did do was set himself up perfectly for an injury replacement if Sonnen or Jones were to suffer one. This has happened in three of the last four seasons of TUF, so it's not a bad idea on Belfort's part. Considering Sonnen got their light heavyweight title shot after fighting at middleweight for years, and Nick Diaz got one after a suspension and a loss, there's not much rhyme or reason to the UFC's title match making these days. Belfort is making a smart play based on recent history.

Cool socks, Chicago pride and Pop Rocks at the UFC on Fox 6 weigh-ins
CHICAGO -- The UFC on Fox 6 weigh-ins featured a large, raucous, possibly liquored up crowd of Chicago fight fans, plenty of cool socks, and every fighter making weight. The only fighter who came close to not making weight was Clay Guida. He walked to the scale wearing a custom shirt with the Chicago flag on it and a Chicago flag wristband. He jumped on the scale and was 147, too heavy for featherweight in his first fight at that weight class. He then took off his Chicago Bulls socks and jewelry, and made weight. The only other bit of drama was some jawing between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Glover Teixiera.
Read on for a complete list of weights and more pictures from the weigh-in.
MAIN CARD (FOX, 8 p.m. ET)
? Champ Demetrious Johnson (125) vs. John Dodson (124)
