Bellator Adds Alexis Vila to Bantamweight Division

by Michael David Smith

As it continues to carve out a niche for itself as the No. 2 promotion in mixed martial arts, Bellator has once again signed a fighter who's big on talent and capable of bringing a great deal of excitement into the cage in former Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Alexis Vila.

Before we get into all the reasons Vila is an exciting addition to Bellator's bantamweight tournament, let's get the two big problems out of the way ...
1. He's old: He turned 40 in March.
2. He's tiny: In the Olympics he wrestled at 105 pounds and most recently fought in MMA at 125 pounds.

USA TODAY: Frankie Edgar replaces Erik Koch, meets champ Jose Aldo at UFC 153

Despite a pair of disappointing losses to current UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson, former titleholder Frankie Edgar will now get his shot at history.

USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com have learned that an undisclosed injury has forced Erik Koch to withdraw from a planned UFC 153 title fight with current featherweight champion Jose Aldo, and Edgar has agreed to step into the evening's main event.

Edgar now looks to join UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and Hawaiian superstar B.J. Penn as the only men to hold UFC championships in two different weight classes.

UFC reveals list of 32 contestants slated to scrap on the Ultimate Fighter 16

The Ultimate Fighter Season 16 is set kickoff on September 14 on FX with a special two-hour premier where previous TUF winner Roy Nelson and fellow heavyweight finisher Shane Carwin will each coach a team of eight welterweight fighters as they do their best to emerge as the last man standing and earn six-figure UFC contract.

Before the coaches can pick teams, the 32 fighters will be trimmed down to just sixteen on the first episode where they will face off in an elimination round. Those left standing will be featured on the show, set to run for thirteen straight weeks on Friday nights. The finalists will then duke it out on December 15 in hopes of hoisting the trophy up and laying claim to the title of Ultimate Fighter. And, now, the world knows exactly who will be competing for the honor.

The list of contestants this year is deep without question an even features Strikeforce/Bellator veterans like Sam Alvey and Bristol Marunde.

?Carwin and Nelson are two guys who just can?t stand each other and Roy and I haven?t exactly seen eye to eye either – he?s been a nightmare for me to work with on this show with all his stupid BS,” added White in a press release on the upcoming season where the cast was also revealed.

One-Handed Fighter Nick Newell Scores Knockout (VIDEO)

While most of us had our attention focused on UFC on FOX 4 on Saturday night, Nick Newell was stepping into the cage at a minor league event called Xtreme Fighting Championships and scoring a knockout. While such occurrences are not uncommon at the smaller shows that happen every weekend across the United States, what makes this one remarkable is the man earning the KO: Newell's left arm ends just past the elbow. Newell, a Massachusetts native and former high school wrestler, is now 8-0 as a pro, and the win puts him line for a crack at the XFC lightweight title.

UFC 150 Preview: The Main Card Breakdown

Because the area was a lawless wasteland, the first two UFCs ever were held in Denver, Colorado. It was an interesting time back then in the winter of 1993: as a chill hung over the McNichols Sports Arena, within a sumo wrestler was literally getting his teeth kicked out while a bunch of other combat sports newbies were huffing and puffing and on the verge of altitude sickness. Denver, you see, is so far above sea level that flying birds are in danger of inadvertently leaving Earth's atmosphere. The UFC has returned to the area many times since, and on Saturday night will be holding UFC 150 there. So who on the main card will be fully acclimated to the thin air and who will look like they're suffering from asthma? Here's a breakdown of the fights to tell you that very thing!

[Listen: Benson Henderson talks with Ariel Helwani about the rematch]

  • Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar ? Edgar became the UFC's lightweight champ after he went five rounds with B.J. Penn. Then he fought Penn for five rounds again, fought Gray Maynard a couple times for a total of nine rounds, and faced former WEC star Henderson, who took the belt from him after another protracted five-round war. To say that Edgar spends a lot of time in the Octagon is an understatement. It would be more accurate to say that he lives in the Octagon, and that UFC president Dana White has often floated the idea of charging the New Jersey-based fighter rent. Unless he can nail a guillotine choke, Henderson is pretty much a decision-type guy as well, so what this one boils down to is who made the best adjustments from their last fight. Has Edgar trained to avoid those up-kicks that wrecked his nose (an injury that required surgery and forced the postponement of this rematch earlier in the year)? Will Henderson continue to throw kicks that Edgar catches and use the opportunity to punch him repeatedly in the face while Edgar stands there holding his leg (which happened last time)? If adjustments have been made, I can see the "Answer" racking up enough points to take the decision over "Smooth". Either way, though, this one is going the distance. Oh, and both men will be in great shape.
  • Don Cerrone vs. Melvin Guillard ? When it comes to knocking people out, lightweight "The Ultimate Fighter ? Season Two" veteran Guillard is king. Unfortunately, when it comes to defending submissions, the "Young Assassin" is like a knave or squire, or perhaps even just a scullery maid. But fear not! For although former WEC star Cerrone is great at grappling, he's also great at standing and banging ? which is hopefully what we'll get for at least the first few minutes of this co-main event hoedown. Granted, once things get too hairy for him on the feet, "Cowboy" can flip the switch, take things horizontal and tap Guillard out, but we should at least get some fireworks. I'm picking Cerrone to win this one via choke, hopefully later rather than sooner.

[Related: Old pals Cerrone, Guillard won't hold back one bit]

  • Jake Shields vs. Ed Herman ? Middleweight jiu-jitsu expert Shields ruled Strikeforce with an iron fist, even handling Dan Henderson like he was nothing in his last fight with the organization. But since crossing over to the UFC, Shields' performances can best be summed up by the word "meh". TUF 3 runner-up Herman's career has been a mixed bag of dominant wins and crushing defeats, yet he's a gamer, and if he can prevent Shields from getting him down, he can clinch his way to a decision. That's not going to happen, as Shield will get him down and tie him in knots, but hey, if Herman was going to win, that's how he'd do it.
  • Yushin Okami vs. Buddy Roberts ? Former middleweight contender Okami didn't look so hot against champ Anderson Silva, and when he took on Tim Boetsch at UFC 144, he was dominant until Boetsch said "Enough of this crap!" and simply beat him unconscious. Replacing Rousimar Palhares as Okami's dance partner is Roberts, who had a less-than-inspiring UFC debut back in June and who's clearly taking a big step up in competition with this match-up. Look, I'm not going to pretend that Roberts has the chops to beat Okami if Okami is sharp and "in the zone", but if the Japanese fighter is truly riding a fast train to Suckville, losing to the Greg Jackson-trained young buck would likely mean the end of him in the Octagon. I predict Okami takes this one by getting Roberts down and pounding on him.And if doesn't? see ya, "Thunder".

[Related: Cagewriter breaks down all the fights on the undercard]

  • Justin Lawrence vs. Max Holloway ? Okay, okay, Lawrence looked extremely impressive earning a win via knockout at the TUF 15 finale, but does that mean we should have a TUFer on the main card of a pay-per-view event so soon after his respective season? Anyway, Lawrence can strike pretty well, and his opponent ? Hawaii native Holloway ? hasn't really made an impact in two UFC appearances (he lost handily to Dustin Poirier and decisioned Pat Schilling), so this bout is either going to be quick and violent or it's going to make you call your cable company and say you ordered this UFC by mistake. I'm leaning towards the former, with Lawrence emerging victorious.

Tarec Saffiedine still waiting, still hoping for Strikeforce welterweight title shot

Not much has changed for Tarec Saffiedine since his win earlier this month.

Well, other than a slightly high-profile injury coming out of his training camp at Team Quest involving Dan Henderson. But other than that, it's the usual for Saffiedine -waiting. Just waiting, and hoping.

Saffiedine was hoping his win over Roger Bowling at "Strikeforce" Rousey vs. Kaufman" would get him a welterweight title shot. But if that is to be the case, he doesn't have an answer yet.

Mark Munoz interested in fighting Hector Lombard

UFC middleweight Mark Munoz was on the cusp of contending for the divisional title before running into Chris Weidman last month and suffering a devastating knockout in the bout?s second stanza. The loss snapped a four-fight winning streak for Munoz and sent him back to the drawing board.

Though Munoz is still serving a medical suspension it appears he already has a specific opponent in mind for his return to the ring ? Hector Lombard. The two talented 185ers exchanged some trash-talk leading up to their most recent outings with Lombard even stating he would rather fight ?The Filipino Wrecking Machine? than compete for a championship.

?You know Hector Lombard has been talking a lot about me so I don’t mind fighting him. I know he’s upset about what I said about him?I didn’t want to disrespect him at all. That’s just how I felt?I didn’t want to disrespect him as a fighter. He’s a very good fighter, but if he wants to go, we can go,? said Munoz in an interview with BJPenn.com, adding, ?I?m anxious to get back in there.?

Lombard: “I want to fight him bad.”

Earlier this month, the 31-3-1 Lombard announced he would be out until mid-September in order to heal from a few injuries he suffered while training for his Octagon debut. The former Bellator champ ultimately lost a Split Decision to Tim Boetsch at UFC 149 but was competitive throughout, even deserving the judges’ nod in the eyes of many, and had won more than twenty straight scraps entering the event.

Dan Henderson says Chael Sonnen wasn?t informed about his injury

UFC light heavyweight Dan Henderson has been absorbing a lot of information over the past few days since news broke about his inability to face Jon Jones on September 1 at UFC 151 and the event?s subsequent cancellation. One of the many stories floating around has pertained to Henderson having told Chael Sonnen about his injured knee three weeks ago when he first suffered a torn MCL, allowing Sonnen to start training for a potential fight with Jones rather than enter it with six weeks of rust.

Henderson, who has heard the rumor, was quick to shoot it down today saying Sonnen was not only in the dark but likely would have lost if the bout had actually occurred.

“Chael didn?t know anything about it. He had definitely not been training at all,? explained Henderson in an interview on The MMA Hour. ?My guys told me that Greg Jackson said in an interview that Chael was down training with me and getting ready for the fight and knew I was hurt. It was nothing like that at all. He wasn?t even down here. I asked him if he wanted to come down and help me train a couple months ago, but he didn?t come down.”

Henderson’s Coach Details Knee Injury

As far as how Sonnen might have performed in the match-up, Henderson appeared to have little faith in his Team Quest teammate?s ability to pull off a feat as grand as beating Jones on such short notice.

?Chael might?ve done okay in the first round, maybe take Jon Jones down and then probably run out of gas pretty quickly,? said Henderson. ?Being out of shape, for Chael to take Jon Jones down would require probably a little more energy than to bounce around the cage and exchange punches with him. So I think he definitely would?ve needed a little bit more gas than sitting on the couch for six weeks would give him.”

The 42-year old Henderson also revealed he?s healing up fine and expects to fight again before the end of 2012, likely against Jones if the champion retains his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.

UFC 151 off after cancellation of headlining title-fight between Jon Jones-Dan Henderson

A day ago the MMA community was consumed with the upcoming bout between UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and Dan Henderson. The scrap, set for September 1 at UFC 151, was one of the most anticipated match-ups of the year. Unfortunately, it was also apparently a proverbial stopper inside a sink.

Earlier this afternoon it was revealed Henderson had been forced out of the meeting due to a knee injury. The UFC then offered Chael Sonnen as a replacement, though Jones turned the fight down. As a result, the entire card has been cancelled.

Greg Jackson Reacts to Star Student’s Situation

Jones? decision has also set of a firestorm of opinion from fighters, fans, and even UFC President Dana White with camps split between blaming Jones for refusing to face Sonnen and faulting the UFC for putting together a relatively weak overall show.

Fortunately, Jones will not be out of action for long as he has agreed to take on Lyoto Machida on September 22 at UFC 152 (possibly numbered as UFC 151 given the day?s events). The show also features a title-fight between flyweights Joseph Benavidez-Demetrious Johnson as well as Michael Bisping-Brian Stann in a middleweight meeting.

Lyoto Machida turned down title-fight with Jon Jones in hopes of more time to train

Heads were left spinning last night when it was revealed Vitor Belfort would be facing Jon Jones on September 22 rather than Lyoto Machida who was originally linked to a bout with the UFC light heavyweight champ. While the news indicated Machida turned the fight down rather than some sort of miscommunication from UFC brass, no reason was attached to the dynamic Brazilian?s decision.

Machida?s management produced a press release today explaining the situation, stating ?The Dragon? opted out of the match-up in order to put together a training camp he was comfortable with.

Machida Still Interested in Run at 185 Pounds

?I want to serve the UFC and recapture the belt. I always respect my opponent. For those reasons, I must prepare myself in the manner I believe in,? explained Machida in a prepared statement.

?Lyoto is eager to get back to training, and have another shot at the light heavyweight belt. However, with the proposed fight being only four weeks away, Lyoto manifests that the deadline is unfeasible in order to have a training camp that is complete and worthy of his work ethic. Lyoto believes that the bout could take place at UFC 153, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro on October 13, allowing him six weeks to prepare,? added Machida?s representatives.

No reaction has surfaced from the UFC regarding Machida?s move, though clearly the company was not interested in waiting on him given Belfort?s booking.

Chad Mendes facing up to six months behind bars for battery

UFC featherweight Chad Mendes doesn?t currently have a bout booked but it looks like he does of a time and place for his next fight, albeit one he?ll be waging inside a California courtroom rather than the cage. Mendes has been formally charged with battery relating to a July 29 incident where he is alleged to have sucker-punched an individual.

If found guilty, the 27-year old could end up paying a $2,000 fine and having to spend up to six months in jail. He will be arraigned on September 19.

A More Detailed Report of Mendes’ Run In with the Law

Mendes narrowly avoided arrest last month after authorities responded to a call involving a large-scale bar fight in the featherweight?s hometown of Hanford, California. Though not one of the main culprits, Mendes refused to leave the scene and is then said to have struck one of the business? patrons as he fled through the establishment?s back door. He was pursued by police for further questioning but managed to escape on foot.

No comment has come from Mendes on the matter though his legal team has denied the accuracy of the story being circulated by country officials.

Lyoto Machida: ?I must prepare myself in the manner I believe in.?

?Titan Fighting Championship 24? Results

With UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones hoarding most of the mixed martial arts headlines, it’s easy to overlook the fact “Titan Fighting Championship 24″ took place Saturday night inside Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. WWE RAW Backstage Fallout: The Miz asks fans to ?keep on hating?

As always there was plenty of action behind-the-scenes on Monday night during RAW including reactions from a handful of superstars on their performances earlier in the evening. Featured in this week’s Backstage Fallout bunch were The Miz, Cody Rhodes, and Damien Sandow.

Miz had a number of interesting things to say after abandoning tag-partner Daniel Bryan, leaving him to suffer the wrath of Kane all alone, including a message to fans.

?Keep on hating and fuel my fire and I will continue to be?awesome,? Miz exclaimed.

Meanwhile, Rhodes made it clear his loss in a six-man tag bout was the result of incompetent teammates rather than his decision to go for Sin Cara?s mask instead of finishing his new-found rival, while a bruised and battered Sandow shrugged off the post-match attack from Brodus Clay.

Brett Cooper Talks Fighting in Bellator, Life in MMA Outside the UFC

by Michael David Smith

When Brett Cooper last stepped into the cage, it was for a five-minute, five-round fight for a championship in the Lords of the Cage MMA promotion. Cooper had prepared to fight for 25 minutes, but things didn't go quite as planned: He knocked Keith Berry out in just 10 seconds (video above).

"He came in real quick and aggressive, I countered him with a punch and it was over," Cooper said. "It was a strange moment because it happened so fast. It was bittersweet. But that's why you train hard, so things come easy in the fight. But I wouldn't have been disappointed if the fight would have gone more minutes."

For the 23-year-old Cooper, who will fight Alexander Schlemenko Saturday at Bellator 44 on MTV2, trying to make it as a full-time fighter outside the UFC sometimes means not wanting to win a fight too quickly: The experience of getting more minutes in the cage can be good for a fighter's development, and Lords of the Cage isn't exactly handing out six-figure Knockout of the Night bonuses, like UFC fighters can earn.

Video: Braulio Estima not taking chances against Chris Holland at tonight's Titan FC 24

Braulio Estima isn't one of those guys who's going to tout his much-improved striking in advance of his first fight.

Everything he's doing is geared toward putting Chris Holland, whom he faces tonight at Titan Fighting Championship 24, on his back and wrapping up a limb. Better yet, squeezing his neck.

"My strongest skill in fighting is to [take] my opponent into his weakness," Estima told MMAjunkie.com Radio.
