Whoops! Mike Pierce?s win UFC on FX 3 was actually unanimous
Though all eyes are on the Nevada Athletic Commission for mangling Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley's fight, Florida made a pretty big error of its own on Friday night. Mike Pierce beat Carlos Eduardo Rocha in a decision that was announced as a split.
Officials with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which oversees the Florida Boxing Commission, confirmed to MMAjunkie.com that judge Ric Bays, whose score was read as 30-27 for Rocha, had scored the fight in error.
"After the fight, Ric Bays informed the Commission that he scored the wrong corner and asked for a correction," said Sandi Poreda, the director of communications for the FDBPR. "As the other fight was starting, the commission changed it on the official record."
Heading into the bout with Rocha, Pierce had three straight split decisions. His loss to Josh Koscheck was tight enough for one judge to see it for Pierce, so you could see why another split decision when he earned the unanimous would upset him.
With this error, plus attendance of just 6,635, you can bet the UFC won't be visiting Florida again soon. They may have sunshine, Mickey Mouse and LeBron James, but they aren't the best hosts for fights.

Brett Rogers signs with Bellator after losing streak and assault arrest
Brett Rogers started his career with 10 wins, and followed it with four losses, one win, a no contest, an assault arrest stemming from a domestic abuse incident and a jail sentence of 60 days. Now, he's looking to start over again by signing with Bellator.
"Over the past year I have been challenged in my personal life, but all is now good in the Rogers family," Rogers said via a Bellator press release. "Everyone makes mistakes in life but it's how you recover that really counts. I spend every day with my wife and kids and enjoy every minute of it. Fighting is my job and I love it, but I also love my family and that's why I made things right before returning to the cage. All I can say is get ready for a new and improved Brett Rogers."
Rogers' last win came in October of 2010 over Ruben Villareal. After that, he dropped bouts to Josh Barnett and Eddie Sanchez. The no-contest comes from a February bout. He also has losses to Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem, and his biggest win came over Andrei Arlovski in June of 2009.
He will debut at Bellator 71 on June 22. An opponent has not been named.

With Vladimir Putin watching, Fedor Emelianenko knocks out Pedro Rizzo
MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko notched another win in St. Petersburg, Russia, knocking out former UFC heavyweight contender Pedro Rizzo in the first round. With Russian president Vladimir Putin looking on, Emelianenko leveled Rizzo with a right hand then followed him to the ground to stop the fight.
Emelianenko now has three wins in a row after losing to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson in Strikeforce. Before that, he was an unstoppable force, racking up 31 wins, one loss and one no contest.
Before this bout, Emelianenko told Russian television this fight would be his last, but he did not talk about retirement in his post-bout interview. It remains to be seen if "The Last Emperor" is truly done with MMA.
Aaron Simpson will honor Pat Tillman at UFC on Fuel 4
Aaron Simpson went to Arizona State with NFL player and Army Ranger Pat Tillman. Simpson became friends with Pat's brother Kevin, and Pat and Kevin would come to wrestling meets to support Simpson and the other Sun Devil wrestlers.
"I can remember exactly where I was when I found out Pat was killed, and how I handled it, which wasn't good," Simpson told Cagewriter. To honor Tillman and his legacy, Simpson will wear the number 42 on his fight shorts for his bout with Kenny Robertson at UFC on Fuel 4.
"I want people who don't know him to at least give notice to who he was. Look him up. Honor his family, his wife, and bring more viewership to his foundation, the Pat Tillman Foundation."
Tillman surprised the sporting world when left a promising and lucrative NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals to become an Army Ranger after the September 11th attacks. He was killed in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.
He went to high school in the San Jose area, where Simpson's fight will take place. It seemed like the perfect time for Simpson to honor Tillman. Kevin agreed.
"I texted Kevin, and he said, 'Pat would really appreciate it. Pat would have loved this,'" Simpson said.
"He didn't want to be known for what he did in serving the military. He was the kind of guy that wasn't about himself or bringing recognition to himself or what he did. He was a team player. I don't want to make too big. In a way, it's a kind of personal thing. I just want to remember him."

Erick Silva and Eddie Wineland big winners at UFC on FX 3
Several contenders distinguished themselves at UFC on FX 2 in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night.
Erick Silva continued his path of domination through the welterweight division with another first round win. This time, the victim was Charlie Brenneman.
Though Brenneman held off early submission attempts, he couldn't stay out of Silva's clutches for long. After getting the fight to the ground, Silva easily stretched out Brenneman and sunk in a rear naked choke to stop the bout at 4:33 in the first round. With that tapout, Silva won a $40,000 Submission of the Night bonus.
Silva now has two wins in the UFC, and his loss came by a weird disqualification. He's taken a step up in competition with every bout, and should continue to move up the crowded welterweight class.
Eddie Wineland sustained a large cut early in his fight with Scott Jorgensen, but that didn't slow either man. With blood gushing from his face, Wineland matched up with Jorgensen's wrestling for a tight first round. Wineland blew the bout open with a right cross in the second round. Jorgensen immediately dropped and the bout was stopped at 4:10 in the second round to give Wineland his first UFC win. For their exciting bout, Jorgensen and Wineland were rewarded an extra $40,000 each for Fight of the Night.
Josh Neer started strong against Mike Pyle, wobbling him several times in the first round, but Pyle got his revenge with a huge right hand. Neer was moving forward when Pyle caught him with a short right hook that sent Neer to the ground. The fight was stopped at 4:56 of the fight round. Like the other main card fighters, Pyle won $40,000, but for Knockout of the Night. (more...)

NCAA champion wrestler Anthony Robles on MMA and his next challenges
Anthony Robles is used to overcoming challenges. The man was born with one leg, and still won a Division I NCAA wrestling championship. It's not surprising to hear that the challenge of MMA holds interest for the Arizona State grad and motivational speaker.
"It's a possibility. Right now, I'm focused on my speaking career, but when I'm in Arizona, I'm wrestling and I'm learning jiu-jitsu," Robles told Cagewriter. "I'm having fun with it. I would always get the fight question when I wrestled in college, I would say, well, if they ever make a 125-pound weight class in MMA, I'd be there. They just made it."
The UFC's recent addition of flyweights opens the door for Robles, but in the meantime, he has plenty on his plate. He is working on a book, movie rights and this week, he's in New York with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, a group that supports the endeavors of physically challenged athletes. He likes getting to meet other athletes like him because of the way they see each other.
"To ourselves, we're not disabled. We're not handicapped. We're just out there doing the best with what we have, and we're going to do everything we can to beat whoever comes across our paths. Just to be in the same room as these other competitors now, they get that mindset. We have that bond, of us showing the world what we're capable of."

"We are honored to feature Anthony Robles at our 2012 Celebration of Heroes, Heart and Hope," said Virginia Tinley, the executive director of CAF. "His ability to overcome the odds, and his incredible achievements, make him a role model for both challenged athletes and able-bodied athletes alike. His success serves as an inspiring example that there are no limits to what the next generation of challenged athletes can accomplish, and CAF is proud to provide the support that will allow them to pursue their dreams."
The Celebration of Heroes, Heart and Hope took place in New York on Wednesday evening. In addition to Robles, the event featured challenged athletes Haven Shepherd, U.S. Army Major Daniel Gade and honored Third Point CEO Daniel Loeb.

Luke Rockhold and Tim Kennedy are great at fighting, but not rulebreaking (VIDEO)
Luke Rockhold will get a chance to defend the Strikeforce middleweight belt against Tim Kennedy on July 14 in Portland. The two have been pushing for a match-up, but not because they hate each other. They just wanted a good fight.
In fact, these two can't even be bad when they are being pushed into it by Strikeforce commentator Frank Shamrock.
One quibble, Frank. Rockhold and Kennedy's painting was not of Mother Teresa. It's Our Lady of Guadalupe, the image of the Virgin Mary who appeared to Juan Diego in Mexico in the 1600s.
Though they're both nice guys, they still match up for an interesting bout. Who will win? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
Vitor Belfort interested in fight with Michael Bisping, move to light heavyweight
Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao moved to UFC 149 after injury to Jose Aldo
The UFC's game of musical chairs continues, as Jose Aldo's bout with Erik Koch for the main event of UFC 149 has been scrapped because of an injury to Aldo. Urijah Faber's bout with Renan Barao was moved to the main event at 149 from being the co-main event at UFC 148.
This is the second change to Faber's bout this summer. After coaching against bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz on "The Ultimate Fighter," the two were slated to face off at UFC 148 in Las Vegas. Now, it's Faber vs. Barao for the interim belt at UFC 149 in Calgary.
It's also the latest in a string of main event changes to UFC events. This summer, the main event at UFC 146 was supposed to feature Alistair Overeem vs. Junior dos Santos, but Overeem's inability to get a license in Nevada gave Frank Mir a chance. UFC 147 was supposed to be at a soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro for Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva's rematch. After the UFC couldn't get a venue, the bout was moved to UFC 148.
The bad luck continued for UFC 147 as main eventer Vitor Belfort was injured and Rich Franklin had to fill in. UFC on Fox 4 was also hit as Brian Stann's shoulder injury forced him out of the main event against Hector Lombard. Maurico "Shogun" Rua, who was free because of an injury to his UFC 149 opponent Thiago Silva, will now fight Brandon Vera in the main event of the UFC's fourth Fox show.
Even for a sport as dangerous as MMA, that's a crazy run of bad luck. Can the UFC do anything to prevent injuries? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

UFC calls Anderson Silva greatest of all time (VIDEO)
The latest highlight video from the UFC dubs middleweight champion Anderson Silva the greatest of all time. Do you agree?
The UFC has been around for 19 years. In that time, few fighters have been as dominant as Silva. He has the promotion's record for most consecutive title defenses, consecutive wins and has an overall record of 31-4.
Perhaps MMA fans in 75 years will look back and wonder why Silva was called the greatest, or he will be thought of as MMA's equivalent to Honus Wagner or Red Grange.

Anderson Silva tells of plans to break Chael Sonnen?s face
Through the scads of trash talk Chael Sonnen has spewed since his last bout with Anderson Silva, the UFC middleweight champ has stayed mostly silent. Sure, he'd answer back from time to time, but for the most part, Silva let Sonnen do the heavy lifting in the trash talk department.
That ended Monday when Silva erupted during the UFC 148 media conference call. Listen to the call above. Silva starts speaking at the 6:40 mark, and even if you don't know Portuguese, you can feel the heat in his voice.
"First of all, Chael is a criminal," Silva said through Ed Soares, his manager who often serves as his interpreter. "He's been convicted of crimes. He doesn't deserve to be inside the Octagon. And when the time comes and the time is right, I'm going to break his face and break every one of his teeth in his mouth."
Silva is referring to Sonnen's guilty plea in a mortgage fraud case that happened just months after Silva beat Sonnen with a fifth-round submission at UFC 117.
It wasn't the end of Silva's verbal beatdown of Sonnen.
"I'm going to beat Chael like he's never been beaten before. The joke is over. There's no more talking. I know he's on the line listening, and the game is over. I'm going to beat his [expletive] out of the UFC. He's never going to want to fight again after I'm done with him."
Sonnen offered few retorts for Silva, save a reference to an earlier comment he made about Silva's wife cooking him a steak after Sonnen won the fight.
"He says he's going to break my face? I have two words for you: medium rare."
Halfway through the call, Silva disappeared. With his opponent gone, Sonnen hung up, too. UFC president Dana White ended the call, and then tweeted, "7 years in the UFC and I've never heard Anderson talk like this before!!!"
[Related: Roy Nelson makes interesting proposal to face Mike Russow]
There is only one plausible reason for this Anderson to have shown up. The real Anderson has an evil twin named Andreson. Anderson turns to Andreson when he wants to avoid conference calls, and tells him to let loose. Andreson read through everything Sonnen has said about his twin brother, and let it out. Then, at UFC 148, both men will show up at the fight just to confuse Sonnen.
Or maybe, just maybe, Silva got sick of holding it. Two weeks before the fight, he's letting it out, which is an interesting sign of things to come on July 7.

UFC 148 Conference Call: Silva Surprises Everyone, Threatens Sonnen
Most of the time the UFC conference calls are a rather tedious affair, with the same fighter cliches being thrown around and the same questions being asked every time.. Demetrious Johnson beats McCall, gets shot at UFC?s inaugural flyweight belt
Demetrious Johnson took care of unfinished business at UFC on FX 3 in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night.
Johnson took the lead early by dropping McCall with a right hand halfway through the first round. McCall continually moved forward towards Johnson, but couldn't always land strikes when he did. Throughout the bout, Johnson's conditioning and footwork gave him an edge. He was able to move in and move out to land strikes, frustrating McCall throughout.
There was no scoring error this time as Johnson was announced the winner via unanimous decision. The judges gave it to Johnson 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28.
"It's about using my athletic ability and letting my mind go free," Johnson said about his performance.
The fight was a rematch after their March bout that ended in a draw. That fight didn't go to a fourth round to decide who would advance in the tournament because an incorrect score was announced.
The judges made a definitive, and correct, decision on Friday night. Johnson's win means he'll fight Joe Benavidez for the UFC's first flyweight championship.

Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Why MMA Fans Should Care
1. It's the biggest combat sports event of the year.
For as much as the UFC has gained on -- and in some respects surpassed -- the popularity of boxing, the biggest fights in boxing still exceed the biggest fights in the UFC in terms of pay-per-view buys and worldwide media attention. Although the MGM Grand in Las Vegas obviously won't attract nearly as many fans as the 55,000 who came out to see Georges St. Pierre in Toronto, Pacquiao vs. Mosley will surely get more pay-per-view buys in the United States, far more mainstream media attention and far more attention globally, as Pacquiao is a draw throughout Asia and the single biggest celebrity in the Philippines, a country of nearly 100 million people. This is a major worldwide sporting event.

Maurico ?Shogun? Rua vs. Brandon Vera is the new main event for UFC on Fox 4
A shoulder injury to Brian Stann forced big changes for the UFC's next event on Fox. Now, instead of Stann facing former Bellator champ Hector Lombard, the main event will feature a light heavyweight match-up. Former champion Maurico "Shogun" Rua will take on Brandon Vera on Aug. 4 in Los Angeles.
Rua was supposed to fight Thiago Silva in July, but that bout was scrapped because of an injury to Silva. Vera was training for a fight with James Te Huna earlier in July, but Te Huna now needs a new opponent.
Lombard is opponentless. With the UFC so packed with fights over the summer, there aren't many healthy middleweights available to take on Lombard in his UFC debut. The UFC just had to juggle middleweights around to handle Vitor Belfort's injury and removal from the UFC 147 main event.
Who should Lombard face? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Tony Grano Preps For DaVarryl Williamson, Contemplates Facing Bryant Jennings And Seth Mitchell
Grano (19-2-1, 15 KOs) achieved personal highs in the beginning of the year, both professionally and personally. Exactly two weeks after a 3rd round stoppage of the fan-friendly Brian Minto in late January, Grano welcomed the birth of his daughter, Mya.
The man whose nickname is "TNT" believes he is in the best chapter of his life in every aspect.
His story isn't without minor setbacks, though. He was scheduled to take on then-NABF titlist Johnathon Banks, but Banks broke the commitment to face the No. 1 contender in favor of other plans.
"He was trying to be slick and get a fight with Seth Mitchell," Grano told TQBR this week. "I believe he was taking it because (Banks) thought it would be on HBO and be a better payday."
Banks was subsequently stripped of the belt, which is now on the line on Saturday, and Banks' HBO date was subsequently canceled when Mitchell suffered an injury.
Grano, 32, said he had to adjust his game plan after he trained for nearly five weeks expecting Banks as his opponent. Williamson (27-6, 23 KOs) is a different type of opponent, a larger man than Banks at 6'4". Grano said he looked forward to applying his new strategy after a Jupiter, Fla., training camp and has to be cautious of Williamson's right hand.
Though he's not looking past his bout at hand, Grano looks forward to going back to his home state of Connecticut and spending time with the four-and-a-half-month old Mya. After that, he'll assess his future fights. Fellow American heavyweights Bryant Jennings and Seth Mitchell are in his scope.
Grano watched Jennings win an easy unanimous decision over Steve Collins last Saturday, and was impressed with the 27-year-old.
"(His camp) keeps Jennings real busy," Grano said. "He doesn't have the best punch, but he's a hard worker. He throws a lot of punches. He's a tough kid."
He was also complimentary of Mitchell, the former Michigan State linebacker-turned-boxer, who Grano said is a natural athlete who made a seamless transition to prizefighting.
"Right now, I'm worried about Williamson," Grano said. "This is for the title and is most important before I think about (future opponents) too much."
